Billie Jean King Completes College Degree at 82 After 61-Year Tennis Career

Tennis legend Billie Jean King graduated from college at age 82, completing the history degree she …
A Tennis Legend's Academic JourneyWhen Billie Jean King left college in 1964, she had a clear purpose. Within a few years, she had become the top-ranked tennis professional in the world. Over a trailblazing career, she won 39 championships, a Presidential Medal of Freedom and a congressional Gold Medal – all while pushing publicly for gender and pay equality.Last year, she finally returned to finish the degree in history she started more than six decades ago. On Monday, she graduated at 82 years old.The Commencement Celebration"It is a privilege for me to be here as a member of your graduating class," King said at her commencement. "Yeah baby, only 61 years!"King recalled growing up in a working-class family, the daughter of a firefighter father and homemaker mother."Like so many of my fellow graduates, I am the first member of my immediate family to graduate college, like many of you," King said.Early Life and Tennis BeginningsShe chose Cal State Los Angeles, then known as Los Angeles State College, because the tennis coach, Scotty Deeds, trained men and women together. He said it would help give her the level of competition she needed to excel."Their approach to winning in tennis was revolutionary at the time," King said of Deeds and the women's coach Dr Joan Johnson. "Even today most collegiate D-1 and D-2 tennis teams do not have the women and men practice together. Scotty and Dr Johnson had it right and they took the extra step for their student athletes."King distinguished herself as a tennis champ in college, winning Wimbledon doubles while enrolled. King was 18 and her partner, Karen Hantze, was 17, making them the youngest team to win at the time.A Lifelong Commitment to EqualityBut King told the crowd that her true motivation since childhood had been to fight discrimination, a calling she first remembered feeling at age 12, when she realized that virtually everyone at the tennis clubs where she trained was white."I asked myself, where is everybody else?" King said. "From that day forward, I committed my life to equality and inclusion for all. Tennis is a global sport and it became my platform, but equality was my dream – to make the world a better place."She added: "We can never understand inclusion unless we've been excluded."King, one of the first openly gay professional athletes, founded the Women's Tennis Association in 1973 and successfully campaigned to get the US Open to pay equal purses at the US Open. That same year, she defeated Bobby Riggs in a historic match billed "The Battle of the Sexes" – a feat later dramatized in a Hollywood film staring Emma Stone and Steve Carell.Legacy and Final WordsKing ended her speech with words of advice for her fellow graduates."Have fun," King said. "Be fearless. And make history."

San Diego Mosque Attack: Victims Identified as Mansour Kaziha and Nader Awad

Authorities have confirmed the identities of two victims killed in an attack on the Islamic Center …
The San Diego Mosque Attack Authorities confirmed the identities of two other men killed in an attack on the Islamic Center of San Diego, in the latest apparent hate incident in the United States. Victim Details Revealed Mosque officials on Tuesday said Mansour Kaziha and Nader Awad had been killed when two gunmen attacked the religious site the day before. Mansour Kaziha was a longtime employee of the mosque, originally from Syria, and was married with five adult children. Nader Awad was a member of the mosque who lived across the street and rushed to the facility when he heard gunshots. The Heroic Response The third victim, Amin Abdullah, a security guard credited with thwarting the attackers, was identified by friends and family. The alleged gunmen were later found dead of apparent self-inflicted gunshot wounds. Investigation and Aftermath Police have been investigating the attack as a hate crime. The chairman of the Mosque’s board of directors, Ahmed Shabaik, said all three men had played a role in responding to the gunmen. The mosque complex, the largest in the county, remained closed as police continued their investigation. Rise in Hate Crimes The Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) said in a statement on Tuesday: “Hate against American Muslims is completely out of control.” The mosque has seen an increase in hate calls in recent times, as instances of Islamophobia have remained elevated amid the ongoing genocide in Gaza.

Google's Foray into Next-Gen Smart Glasses Google is re-entering the smart glasses market with a new line of AI-powered glasses. At Google I/O on Tuesday, the company announced a partnership with Warby Parker and Gentle Monster to produce these devices, which will pair with both Android and iOS devices and were designed in collaboration with Samsung. The Features of Google's Audio Glasses The new devices, dubbed 'audio glasses,' allow users to issue verbal commands and interact with Google's ecosystem of apps and services, including Gemini. Users can simply talk to their glasses to get things done, as demonstrated by a Googler ordering a coffee online by voice command. A New Approach to Smart Glasses Google has previously explored smart glasses, launching Google Glass years ago. The smart glasses space has evolved, with major companies like Meta investing heavily in the area. The new audio glasses are set to be available later this year. The Competitive Landscape The smart glasses market has seen renewed interest, with Meta being a notable player. Google's entry into this space with audio-powered glasses could potentially shift the dynamics, offering users a new way to interact with technology. The Future of Wearable Technology With the introduction of these audio glasses, Google is positioning itself at the forefront of wearable technology. Google Takes a Page Out of Meta's Book with New AI-Powered Smart Glasses

Google's Return to Smart Glasses MarketGoogle has announced a new line of AI-powered smart glasses developed in partnership with Warby Parker and Gentle Monster, marking the company's return to the wearable tech market with voice-activated features powered by its Gemini ecosystem. The devices will be compatible with both Android and iOS platforms and are scheduled for release later this year.Audio-First Smart Glasses with Voice CommandsThe new "audio glasses" will allow users to issue verbal commands to control various functions and access Google's ecosystem of apps and services. During the Google I/O demonstration, a company representative successfully ordered a coffee online simply by speaking to the glasses, showcasing the device's seamless integration with everyday tasks.Google's History in Smart GlassesThis isn't Google's first venture into smart glasses territory. The company previously launched Google Glass, which despite its innovative approach, faced privacy concerns and social backlash, even spawning the derogatory term "glassholes." The new audio-focused approach appears to address some of the earlier product's shortcomings by focusing on audio interactions rather than visual displays.Competitive Landscape in Smart GlassesThe smart glasses market has evolved significantly since Google's initial attempt. Major players like Meta have invested heavily in the space, alongside numerous startups and smaller firms. Google's re-entry with an audio-first approach suggests a strategic shift toward a different market segment than Meta's vision-focused products.Future Outlook for Wearable TechnologyWith Google's renewed interest and established players continuing to innovate, the smart glasses market appears poised for significant growth. The audio-first approach may appeal to consumers who have been hesitant about wearable displays, potentially expanding the market beyond early adopters. As these technologies mature, we can expect more seamless integration with daily routines and potentially new applications in areas like accessibility and hands-free productivity.

Meta Mandates Over 7,000 Workers to Move to New AI Teams

Meta is rapidly reorganizing its workforce around AI, mandating over 7,000 workers to move to new t…
The Meta AI Reorganization Meta is recenter itself around artificial intelligence, the tech giant is mandating more than 7,000 workers to move to new teams, and it’s radically changing some employees’ jobs. The Guardian has learned that some of these reassigned employees will shift to two new teams: one building AI cloud infrastructure and another that’s building an internal AI agent codenamed Hatch. The Details of the Reassignment Late last week, Meta employees received a notice that engineers had been “selected” for reassignment and would begin reporting to the cloud infrastructure and Hatch teams by the end of this week. Meta made a similar move last month when it reshuffled at least 1,000 engineers onto a new data labelling team called Applied AI, or AAI – at first giving them the option to volunteer, but later telling workers, “transfers aren’t optional.” The Impact on Employees This rapid-fire reorganization is stirring up discontent within Meta during an already volatile era. “The new orgs showcase a shift in top level management strategy towards micro-authoritarianism,” said a Meta engineer, who requested anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to the press. Instead of empowering employees, it feels like Meta’s attitude has shifted to, “‘No, we tell you what to do, and command and order is the way forward,’” this employee told the Guardian. The Future of Meta's AI Ambitions OpenAI, Google and Anthropic’s consumer AI products are already in the lead, so Meta has been playing catch-up in the AI race. In January, Mark Zuckerberg said in an earnings call that the company will spend up to $135bn on AI infrastructure this year “to train leading models and deliver personal super intelligence to billions of people and businesses around the world”.

Google’s Universal Cart Aims to Own Your Entire Shopping Journey

At Google I/O, the company unveiled Universal Cart, an AI‑powered hub that consolidates products fr…
At Google I/O on May 19, 2026, Google announced Universal Cart, an AI‑driven hub that lets users collect, track, and purchase products across the web from a single interface, alongside updates to its Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) and the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP). Universal Cart: Centralizing the Multi‑Device Shopping Experience The new cart integrates with Search, the Gemini chat app, YouTube, and Gmail, allowing users to add items from any of these surfaces. Once added, Universal Cart automatically monitors price drops, shows price‑history insights, and sends back‑in‑stock alerts. AI layers help shoppers make smarter choices—for example, flagging incompatibilities when building a custom PC and suggesting alternatives. Rollout Timeline and Geographic Reach United States: Universal Cart available today via the Gemini app. Summer 2026: Full Gemini app integration. Later 2026: Expansion to YouTube and Gmail. 2026‑2027: UCP categories broaden to hotels and local food delivery. 2026‑2027: Geographic expansion to Canada, Australia, and subsequently the United Kingdom. Strategic Implications for E‑commerce and AI Assistants Universal Cart moves Google’s AI assistants from passive recommendation tools to active participants that can complete purchases autonomously. By linking discovery, consideration, and checkout under a single Google‑controlled layer, the company gains unprecedented visibility into consumer buying pathways, a development retailers and payment processors will monitor closely. Future Outlook: From Agent Payments to a Fully Autonomous Commerce Layer With AP2, users can set brand, product, and spending limits, allowing agents to execute transactions within those guardrails. As Google embeds AP2 across its product suite, we can expect a gradual shift toward fully autonomous shopping experiences, heightened regulatory scrutiny around consent and data security, and competitive pressure on other platform providers to launch similar agent‑payment frameworks.

Broadway Star Jessica Vosk Appeals for Privacy After Fan Intrusion

Broadway star Jessica Vosk has spoken out after a 'super-fan' gained unauthorized access to her dre…
The Privacy Violation at the Majestic TheatreBroadway star Jessica Vosk has made a public appeal for backstage privacy after experiencing a distressing security breach. The performer, currently starring in the musical Beaches at New York's Majestic Theatre, revealed how a "super-fan" managed to enter her dressing room, causing her significant fear and discomfort. The Unwanted Intrusion DetailsIn a video posted on Instagram, Vosk explained that someone had gained access to her dressing room by following a group of people she knew. "I don't know how that happened – I will figure that out," she stated. It was only after several minutes that she realized the stranger was not part of her acquaintance group. "It's really scary when this stuff happens," Vosk shared, "because then it makes the actor feel put in a really crappy-ass position."Vosk noted that while it's traditional for fans to wait at the stage door after shows, this is not guaranteed or expected as part of an actor's job. Due to the considerable demands of Beaches, she had not been appearing at the stage door recently. "This show is a huge lift for me and I have not had a day off and I have been going, going, going as much as I can," she explained, emphasizing her priority to stay healthy and rest after performances.Industry Support and Shared ExperiencesFellow actors have expressed strong support for Vosk on social media, sharing their own similar experiences. Notable responses include:Kristin Chenoweth: "It's happened to me. Kinda scary."Kay-Megan Washington: Commented that such scenarios had "been happening too often" and called for greater security.Lea Salonga: "This makes me so angry! I'm so sorry it happened to you."Salonga, who previously encountered two theatregoers in her dressing room in 2023, has previously decried an "attitude of entitlement" from some fans, stating that buying a ticket for a show "does not mean all-access."A Growing Pattern in Theater SecurityThe issue extends beyond Broadway stages. In 2023, American actor Sophia Bush reported that on the afternoon of her first performance in 2:22: A Ghost Story in London, "a man stuck a camera in the window of our ladies' dressing room." The same individual later "shoved his camera through our curtains" before a production member intervened and the intruder fled. The Future of Performer Privacy and SecurityVosk concluded her video with a direct appeal to fans: "Please do not try and somehow sneak backstage to someone's dressing room at a show. It's really scary for us. It might not feel scary to you, but it is for us." This incident, along with similar accounts from other performers, highlights the growing need for enhanced backstage security measures and a cultural shift regarding boundaries between performers and audiences. As theater continues to navigate the post-pandemic landscape, ensuring artist safety and privacy may become an increasingly important consideration for venues and productions.

Philippine Senate Shooting Probe: Security Guards Under Investigation

Philippine authorities are investigating Senate security officers who discharged their weapons with…
The Senate Shooting Incident Philippine authorities are investigating Senate security officers who discharged their weapons without provocation while a senator facing an International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant took shelter inside the legislative building and later escaped. Investigation and Findings Juanito Victor Remulla, secretary of the interior and local government, on Tuesday said the May 13 shooting was not an “attack on the Senate”, adding that there was no one in the area when the gun was fired. Remulla identified Senate Sergeant-at-Arms Mao Aplasca as the person who fired the first shot. National Police chief Jose Melencio Nartatez, who said investigators recovered 44 fired cartridges traced to four firearms, stated that Aplasca had been called to a police inquiry to have his gun tested, but he had not yet complied. The Impact on Senator Dela Rosa The shooting happened last week, when Senator Ronald Dela Rosa, a 64-year-old former police chief and key figure in ex-President Rodrigo Duterte’s war on drugs, took refuge in the Senate on May 11 after the ICC confirmed having unsealed his arrest warrant on suspicion of crimes against humanity. Dela Rosa was Duterte’s top lieutenant and oversaw a fierce crackdown on drug dealers, which saw thousands shot dead in extrajudicial killings. The Future Outlook The case is being handed over to the Department of Justice for further investigation. Nartatez said dela Rosa left the legislative building and got into a car registered to his ally, Senator Robin Padilla, which left for an unknown destination.
