Israel Launches Airstrikes on Lebanon Hours After Ceasefire Takes Effect

Ceasefire Takes Effect but Israeli Airstrikes ResumeDespite a brokered ceasefire that was set to start at 4 pm local time (1300 GMT) on Friday, Israeli forces continued to strike southern Lebanon, reigniting fears that the fragile agreement could collapse.Details of the Fragile Agreement and Immediate ViolationsThe ceasefire, mediated by Qatar, the United States and Iran, was intended to halt hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah and to protect a wider diplomatic push toward a lasting regional peace deal. Within minutes of the deadline, at least 12 Israeli air raids and ongoing artillery shelling were reported across southern Lebanon.Casualty Toll and Scale of the Violations47 people killed97 woundedContinuous artillery fire affecting civilian areasThese figures come from the Lebanese health ministry and underscore the human cost of the ceasefire breach.Regional Repercussions: US‑Iran MoU and Wider Peace Efforts at RiskThe renewed fighting prompted the United States and Gulf diplomats to reaffirm the ceasefire, but the violence forced the postponement of a planned US‑Iran memorandum‑of‑understanding (MoU) meeting in Switzerland. Iranian officials warned that Washington bears direct responsibility for the escalation, linking the Lebanon front to the broader ceasefire arrangement across all fronts. What Comes Next: Prospects for a Sustainable TruceHezbollah officials have said the ceasefire will hold only if Israel refrains from further attacks, while Israeli spokespeople claim they retain “operational freedom” to respond to perceived threats. Analysts warn that repeated violations could erode confidence in diplomatic channels, making a durable truce increasingly unlikely unless both sides commit to a verifiable monitoring mechanism.

Camdenwalla review – a story of fear and defiance in 90s London

The play 'Camdenwalla' is a fictional two-hander set in 1994 London, based on the true story of the…
The Camden Monitoring Project's Legacy This theatre’s address was once the headquarters of the Camden Monitoring Project, a volunteer-run organisation established to provide safe transport home for South Asian restaurant workers at a time of rampant racist attacks. Built on four years of research with the local Bengali community, actor Jonny Khan’s debut play turns that chapter of history into a fictional two-hander, which unfolds on a single evening in 1994. A Night of Fear and Defiance Muhammad (Bhasker Patel) is a Bengali Londoner who spends his nights coordinating the understaffed rescue service. He and his mature-beyond-her-years teenage niece Alima (Nusrath Tapadar) have barricaded themselves into his dingy office where the phone won’t stop ringing. The murder of a white teenager has prompted a slew of verbal and physical attacks. Frightened callers plead for assistance on Muhammad’s helpline, knowing the police have turned a blind eye. A Missed Opportunity for Tension But despite the urgency of this story, and the pertinence of the venue, the play lacks tension. Its setup brings to mind the gut-wrenching film The Voice of Hind Rajab, in which increasingly strained Palestinian Red Crescent call operators attempt to provide safe passage under impossible circumstances. However, in Khan’s play, the plight of the offstage characters gets buried beneath the focus on Muhammad and Alima’s relationship, and an attempt to make them funny. Performance and Direction Still, Patel and Tapadar navigate the oscillating emotions deftly. And under Khan’s own direction, a sense of trepidation is kindled with the help of Sarah Sayeed’s sound design carrying thuds from outside into their sanctuary. A Timely and Important Story It could do with some refocusing but in the aftermath of the Belfast riots, which also saw a targeting of minority groups, it seems especially important to bear witness to this story, which says as much about the present as the past.

Russia renews strikes on Ukraine, killing three after drone attack on Moscow

Russia has renewed its strikes on Ukraine, killing three people, including an eight-year-old girl, …
The Escalating Conflict Russia has renewed its strikes on Ukraine, killing three people including an eight-year-old girl, Ukrainian officials said. The Russian strikes on Friday come a day after Ukraine launched its biggest-ever drone attack on Moscow, killing a different eight-year-old girl and sparking an inferno at a major oil refinery, according to Russian officials. The Drone Attacks Between late Thursday and early Friday, Russia launched 90 drones at Ukraine, according to the Ukrainian air force. “An eight-year-old girl was killed. Another person was wounded. These are the consequences of this morning’s enemy attack on Pavlohrad,” Oleksandr Ganzha, the governor of Ukraine’s central Dnipropetrovsk region, said. The Impact on Civilians Separate Russian attacks on Ukraine’s southern Odesa region killed one person, while strikes on the eastern city of Kramatorsk killed one other, according to authorities. Russian drone attacks late on Thursday killed one person and wounded five others on civilian ships in the Black Sea, Ukraine said. The Kremlin's Response The Kremlin said on Friday it would “continue” striking Ukraine following that attack. “These strikes [on Ukraine] will continue,” spokesman Peskov said, according to Russian news agencies. The Retaliation Ukraine insists its strikes targeting Russia are fair retaliation for attacks on its own civilians. Ukraine’s military also struck railway bridges in Russian-held Crimea, Ukraine’s general staff said on Friday.

Israel's Delicate Balance: Navigating US-Iran Relations and Lebanon Conflict

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is walking a tightrope between appeasing his domestic cri…
The Lead Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has restrained himself from openly displaying his opposition to the memorandum of understanding between Iran and the United States. But looking to the positions of Israelis from across the political spectrum, and the military’s actions in Lebanon, the picture is clear: Israel is angry, and Israel is worried. Netanyahu's Constrained Response Netanyahu has always been careful with US President Donald Trump, knowing that his occasional criticisms of Israeli policy have been coupled with allowing Israel to pursue many of its military and political goals, even as the rest of the world isolates the country. The war with Iran was a case in point – after years of US refusal, Netanyahu had finally convinced a US president to jointly attack Iran. The Data Analysis Under the terms of the US-Iran agreement, as well as creating a $300bn reconstruction plan for Iran, the US commits that it and “its allies” will undertake the “immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon”. The Impact Analysis Israel immediately responded to that agreement by pounding Lebanon, killing at least 47 people on Friday, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health. Four Israeli soldiers were also killed overnight by the armed Lebanese group, Hezbollah, prompting Israel’s far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir to say that “all of Lebanon must burn”. The Prediction How far Netanyahu can go in his defiance of the US, whose diplomatic and financial support are critical to Israel, and how far he can go in appeasing an Israeli public and political establishment widely understood to reject the deal, is unclear. According to a television poll published on Thursday, only a small minority of Israelis believe their country has won the war against Iran – an opponent that, for generations, they had been told was bent on their destruction.

Trump Frames Iran Deal as 'Unconditional Surrender' Amid Lebanon Tensions

President Donald Trump is aggressively defending a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU…
Washington, DC – President Donald Trump has launched a fierce defense of the newly signed US-Iran Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), framing the diplomatic breakthrough as a strategic victory and an 'unconditional surrender' for Tehran. As Vice President JD Vance cancels critical negotiations in Switzerland, the administration faces intense scrutiny from both Democrats and hawkish Republicans over the terms of the deal. The MOU and the 'Unconditional Surrender' NarrativeIn a series of posts on Truth Social, Trump rejected criticism that the MOU only addresses issues created by the conflict itself, such as the US naval blockade on Iran’s ports and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. He argued that the US military strikes had already diminished Iran's capabilities, stating, 'The War has diminished Iran!' and declaring that Tehran entered negotiations out of 'desperation'.Trump characterized the agreement as 'probably is unconditional surrender,' asserting that he learned from the war that there are 'no limits' to his power. He specifically targeted Democrats for claiming Iran is 'better off now than it was four months ago,' calling such sentiments 'stupid.'The $300bn Reconstruction Fund and Strategic ConcessionsThe MOU outlines a 60-day negotiation window to address critical issues, including Iran's nuclear program, the administration of the Strait of Hormuz, and the release of frozen assets. A central component of the deal is a proposed $300bn reconstruction plan for Iran.Key Negotiation Points: Nuclear program, Strait of Hormuz access, sanctions lifting, and reconstruction funding.Timeline: 60-day negotiation period following the signing.Funding Source: Trump insists the $300bn reconstruction fund will not be funded by US taxpayer dollars. The Lebanon Escalation and Republican PushbackThe longevity of the deal is currently threatened by Israel's ongoing military campaign in Lebanon. Reports indicate a new ceasefire was agreed in Lebanon shortly after the MOU signing, but Israel continues to hit over 150 targets.Trump’s relationship with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is described as 'good, but we have to keep him a little bit sane.' VP JD Vance also issued a rare public rebuke to Israel, warning officials against attacking 'the only powerful ally that [they] have anywhere left.'Domestic opposition is mounting from within the Republican party. Senator Tom Cotton criticized the immediate lifting of sanctions on Iran's fossil fuel industry as a 'step in the wrong direction.' Senator Roger Wicker has similarly opposed the Lebanon ceasefire clause and the reconstruction fund. The 60-Day Negotiation Window and Regional StabilityTrump indicated that the administration will 'play out the 60 days' to finalize the complex terms of the agreement. The future of the deal hinges on whether the ceasefire in Lebanon holds and if the international community accepts the terms of the reconstruction plan without US taxpayer funding.

Afghanistan Launches Air Strikes on Pakistan, Escalating Cross-Border Tension

Afghanistan has launched air strikes on hideouts used by armed groups and 'hostile intelligence cir…
The Lead Afghanistan has launched air strikes on what it called hideouts used by armed groups and “hostile intelligence circles” inside Pakistan, Kabul has announced. The strikes, reported on Friday by Afghanistan’s defence ministry, were launched the previous day. The incident is the latest threat to the fragile ceasefire between the neighbours. Cross-Border Tensions Hostilities have broken out several times over recent months, killing hundreds of people, and mediators led by China have so far failed to secure an agreement for a settled peace. The hideouts, located in Pakistan’s Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces, both of which share a border with Afghanistan, were targeted by the “air force” on Thursday night, Afghanistan’s defence ministry said in a social media post. The Data Analysis At least 372 Afghan civilians killed and 397 injured in cross-border fighting in the first three months of 2026 (United Nations). Pakistan launched air strikes on Afghan provinces last week, which the Afghan Taliban said killed at least 13 people, including 11 children, and injured 14. Islamabad ‌said the “calibrated strikes” killed 26 fighters and were a response to a recent spate of attacks in the country’s northwest. The Impact Analysis Relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan have been fraught since the Taliban took power for a second time. Fighting escalated sharply in late February after Afghanistan launched a cross-border attack on Pakistan in retaliation for its air raids. Islamabad continues to believe that Kabul is harbouring fighters who carry out deadly attacks in Pakistan, especially the TTP. The Afghan government says the issue is Pakistan’s internal problem. The Prediction “Afghanistan will no longer tolerate any threat to its security and stability. ‌It ‌will use all available means and capabilities to neutralise and eliminate any threat at its source,” the Afghan defence ministry said in its statement on Friday. The incident threatens the fragile ceasefire between the neighbours, and it remains to be seen how the situation will unfold in the coming days.

World Cup 2026: USMNT Faces Australia with Pulisic Fitness Concerns

The United States men's national team faces Australia in a crucial World Cup 2026 match with star p…
Crucial World Cup Showdown in SeattleWith only one round of games completed in Group D, both the United States and Australia have the opportunity to secure their places in the World Cup 2026 knockout stages when they meet in Seattle on Friday (19:00 GMT). After a convincing 4-1 victory over Paraguay in their opening match, the USMNT can potentially even clinch top spot in the group with a match to spare should they overcome the Socceroos.Australia, however, presents a significant challenge after their stunning 2-0 counterattacking victory over Turkiye in their first match. The outcome of this showdown, combined with the later match between Paraguay and Turkiye, will determine the qualification scenarios for both teams.Pulisic's Calf Injury Raises ConcernsUSMNT talisman Christian Pulisic's availability for the Australia match is in question after he picked up a left calf injury in training before the opening game against Paraguay. Despite the injury, Pulisic started against Paraguay and played a crucial role in the team's victory, setting up the opening goal and providing the assist for the second. The 27-year-old AC Milan playmaker did not reappear after halftime in the Paraguay match, and while he joined the team huddle during training on Thursday with his calf still strapped, he did not participate in the session, opting instead for gym work with backroom staff.Coach Mauricio Pochettino acknowledged Pulisic's ongoing recovery: "He's evolving. He's much better from Friday. We'll see. If we see he's not available, he will be available for the next game." Pochettino praised Pulisic's determination: "I think Christian is strong and with great mentality and is doing a fantastic effort to try to be ready as soon as possible."Qualification Scenarios on the LineShould the United States defeat Australia, they would guarantee their place in the Round of 32 with six points. A win, combined with either a draw or a Paraguay victory in the later match between Turkiye and Paraguay, would secure first place in Group D for the Americans. The finishing positions in the group stage are determined first by points, then by head-to-head results between teams level on points, with goal difference only used to separate teams that drew against each other. The winners of Group D will face a third-place finisher from Groups B, E, F, I or J in the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium on July 1, with potential opponents including Bosnia, Ecuador, Sweden, Norway or Algeria.Replacement Options if Pulisic Misses OutIf Pulisic is ruled out, Pochettino has several options to replace the influential playmaker. Folarin Balogun is certain to lead the attack after his double against Paraguay, making him the first USMNT player to score multiple goals at a World Cup since 1930.Giovanni Reyna, who came on as a substitute against Paraguay and scored a beautiful trivela in stoppage time, could feature more prominently, though he has not played more than 60 minutes in a match for club or country since December. Timothy Weah, who made an impact after replacing Sergino Dest, could be inserted on the right or as support for Balogun.Sebastian Berhalter replaced Pulisic against Paraguay and adds valuable set-piece capabilities to the team. Other options include Leeds United's Brenden Aaronson or Club America's Alejandro Zendejas, though neither has been a favorite for Pochettino recently.Australia's Young Star Making HistoryAustralia's hopes rest partly on 20-year-old Nestory Irankunda, who made history in their opening match against Turkiye. Irankunda became Australia's youngest World Cup scorer with a goal after 27 minutes, and also became the first overseas-born Australian to find the net on the World Cup stage. After his parents fled civil war in Burundi to a Tanzanian refugee camp, Irankunda was born there in 2006 before moving to Australia as an infant. He came through the youth system at Adelaide United before earning a surprise move to Bayern Munich in 2024.Though he failed to make a first-team appearance at Bayern, he trained with world-class players including Harry Kane. After a loan spell at Grasshopper Zurich, he moved to English side Watford, where he played 42 games in the Championship, scoring four times and adding five assists.Australia's Path to Knockout StagesLike the United States, Australia can secure qualification with a victory in Seattle. A win, coupled with either a draw between Turkiye and Paraguay or a Turkiye win, would ensure first place in Group D with a game to spare.Regardless of the results in their final group match, Australia would finish above Turkiye on head-to-head results, which take precedence over goal difference in this competition. The Socceroos will be looking to build on their defensive resilience against Turkiye, which limited the Turkish side despite their dominance in possession.

The Intersection of Politics and Tech: Jennifer Siebel Newsom’s Battle Against Algorithmic Misogyny

Amidst a federal investigation into her finances, Jennifer Siebel Newsom is launching a documentary…
The Dual Crisis: A Documentary and a Political StormJust days after the Department of Justice announced an investigation into her taxes and the California Partners Project, Jennifer Siebel Newsom sat down in Washington to discuss her new film. The timing is stark: while her husband, Gavin Newsom, faces allegations of a "personal vendetta" by the Trump administration, Siebel Newsom is pivoting to a broader critique of the political and technological forces she believes are eroding the fabric of society. Her latest documentary, Miss Representation: Rise Up, serves as a scathing indictment of an era defined by algorithmic radicalization and the weaponization of technology against women. It connects the personal political attacks on her family to a systemic cultural rot that targets women in the public sphere. The Human Cost of Algorithmic WarfareThe film paints a harrowing picture of a digital landscape that has become hostile to women and girls. Siebel Newsom argues that social media and AI are not just tools for connection but are actively being used to silence and harm women. The documentary focuses on the "democratisation of deepfake pornography," where high school boys use AI tools like Elon Musk's Grok to generate non-consensual explicit images of their female classmates. This digital violence has real-world consequences. The film chronicles the tragic story of Alexandra "Owl" Hinks, a young girl who faced relentless online bullying and sexualized demands, ultimately leading to her suicide. Siebel Newsom describes this as a "social experiment" that has gone unchecked, leaving children vulnerable to manipulation they are not equipped to handle.Statistical Evidence of a Mental Health EmergencyThe documentary relies on hard data to back up its claims, highlighting a crisis that predates the current political climate but has been exacerbated by it. The film cites a 2023 study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that reveals:53% of teenage girls reported feeling persistently sad and hopeless.27% of high school girls seriously considered attempting suicide.Depression is now affecting girls as young as 11 and 12, rather than just the 16-17 age bracket.Siebel Newsom points to internal documents leaked by Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen, alleging that tech companies studied the neurobiology of children to exploit their vulnerabilities for engagement. The Political Weaponization of Tech and GenderThe film draws a direct line between the algorithms that degrade mental health and the political landscape. It argues that the "manosphere" and figures like Andrew Tate are indoctrinating young men to view women as objects, normalizing violence and misogyny. This cultural shift has created a hostile environment for women in politics. The documentary notes that 40% of women across the board—and 80% of women in politics—have been targeted with harassment, rape, and death threats. Furthermore, it highlights the alliance between Silicon Valley billionaires and the right-wing, pointing to Mark Zuckerberg and Musk attending events with Donald Trump as evidence that the tech industry is aligning with forces that threaten democracy. The Path Forward: Guardrails for InnovationDespite the grim outlook, Siebel Newsom advocates for a middle ground between innovation and regulation. She believes that guardrails do not stifle creativity but rather force more responsible innovation. Her personal approach involves delaying smartphone access for her own children until age 14, a strategy she admits may have been too early.Looking ahead, the film suggests that the only way to reverse this trend is through legislative action. As the UK moves to ban social media for children under 16, Siebel Newsom argues that California and the US must follow suit. She predicts that the fight for women's representation and mental health safety will be a defining feature of the 2026 midterms and the 2028 presidential election, ultimately leading to a future where women are central to decision-making tables.

Israel Presses On with Lebanon Strikes Despite US‑Iran Nuclear Deal

Israel has continued its military operations in Lebanon even after the United States and Iran annou…
Escalation of Israeli Airstrikes in Southern LebanonSince June 19, 2026, the Israeli Defense Forces have intensified air and artillery attacks on positions in southern Lebanon, targeting what they describe as Hezbollah infrastructure. The operations persist despite diplomatic headlines surrounding a new US‑Iran nuclear accord.Actors: Israel, Hezbollah, Lebanese governmentLocation: Southern Lebanon, near the Israeli borderTimeline: Attacks reported throughout the day on June 19, 2026Geopolitical Context: US‑Iran Nuclear Deal and Regional TensionsThe United States and Iran announced a tentative nuclear agreement earlier this month, aiming to curb Tehran’s enrichment program. Both Israel and its allies have expressed skepticism, arguing that the deal does not address Iran’s support for proxy groups such as Hezbollah.Humanitarian Data Gaps: No Confirmed Casualty FiguresAt the time of reporting, reliable casualty numbers have not been released. Local hospitals and NGOs are still assessing the impact, and the lack of data hampers a full evaluation of the humanitarian cost.Strategic Implications for Lebanese SovereigntyThe renewed bombardment threatens Lebanon’s fragile political balance. Continued Israeli pressure could force the Lebanese government to confront Hezbollah more directly, risking internal instability.Future Outlook: Diplomacy Versus Military PosturingAnalysts warn that unless the US‑Iran deal translates into concrete constraints on Iranian arms transfers, Israel may maintain its current level of force. International observers are calling for a monitoring mechanism to ensure that diplomatic progress is not undermined by on‑the‑ground violence.
