Tamerlano Opera Review: A Modern Twist on Handel's Classic

A review of the opera Tamerlano, featuring a modern twist on Handel's classic, with characters reim…
Tamerlano, a 1724 opera by Handel, has been reimagined in a modern production at the London Handel Festival. The story revolves around the despotic emperor Tamerlano, who has brought the stubborn Bajazet to his court in chains. Tamerlano's infatuation with Bajazet's daughter Asteria leads him to offer his betrothed, Irene, to the Greek prince Andronico. However, both Bajazet and Andronico threaten to end it all, while Asteria plots to assassinate Tamerlano. In an attempt to make the opera more accessible, director Orpha Phelan has aligned each character with a recognizable famous figure. Tamerlano is reimagined as Donald Trump, Andronico as Alexander the Great, and Irene as Elizabeth Bennet or a Bridgerton escapee. The production is billed as 'Social Experiment 2', manipulated by Andronico's friend Leone, played as Sigmund Freud.Despite the modern twist, the opera's musical standards are high, led by Laurence Cummings and the excellent Academy of Ancient Music. The cast, including Benjamin Hulett as Bajazet, Nardus Williams as Asteria, and Kitty Whately as Irene, copes admirably with Phelan's concept. However, James Laing's portrayal of Tamerlano is somewhat overwhelmed by excessive fidgety business, including eating Big Macs and doing the Trump dance. The production runs at Shoreditch Town Hall, London, until 28 March. Despite some reservations, the opera's vital element of danger is somewhat lost in the buffoonery. Nevertheless, it remains a fine cast and a resourceful set by Madeleine Boyd.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko have signed a friendship treaty aimed at deepening ties between their countries. Both leaders are close allies of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The treaty was signed on Thursday during Lukashenko's two-day trip to Pyongyang. He told Kim that relations between their countries were entering a 'fundamentally new stage', according to the Belarusian state news agency Belta.Lukashenko emphasized the need for independent countries to cooperate closely in today's global transformation, where global powers often ignore and violate international law. Kim expressed opposition to undue pressure on Belarus from the West. The North Korean leader gave Lukashenko a lavish welcome, including a white-horsed cavalry, flag-waving children, and a 21-cannon salute. Both nations have backed Russia's war in Ukraine.Kim has reportedly provided Moscow with ammunition and sent soldiers to help Russia expel Ukrainian forces from its western region of Kursk in 2024. Lukashenko allowed Belarus to be used as a launchpad for Russia's invasion in February 2022 and has agreed to allow Russian tactical nuclear missiles on its territory. The Belarusian leader, in power since 1994, is politically and economically dependent on Putin. Oklahoma City Thunder's Authenticity Wins Fans Over

The Oklahoma City Thunder's unique blend of quirky personalities and impressive basketball skills i…
The Oklahoma City Thunder, a team once considered vulnerable, has surged ahead in the Western Conference with 12 wins in their last 13 games. Their recent performance has sparked discussions about their character and vibes, both on and off the court. At the heart of the Thunder's success is star player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, known for his mechanically brilliant gameplay and deadly midrange jumper. This season, he's added a step-back three-pointer to his arsenal, producing more viscerally awesome moments than ever before. A notable example was his game-winning three-pointer against the Denver Nuggets on March 9, showcasing his clutch performance.Gilgeous-Alexander's personality, though sometimes quirky, has endeared him to fans. His love for fashion is evident in his game-day attire, from a mustard-colored leather suit to a fur coat. The Thunder's team dynamic is also characterized by their tendency to conduct on-court interviews in groups, showcasing their camaraderie. While some critics have labeled the Thunder as 'nerdy' and 'authentic,' these traits have become a breath of fresh air in the NBA. Their decision to decline a visit to the White House, citing a 'timing issue,' and their refusal to engage in certain political discussions, have also sparked conversation.Compared to other top NBA teams, the Thunder's quirks are a refreshing change. Unlike the Boston Celtics' reliance on three-pointers or Victor Wembanyama's sanctimonious views on the Spurs' playing style, the Thunder's approach is seen as more genuine. Even their defensive strategy, fueled by effort and creativity, as seen when Alex Caruso tried to block a shot with his shoe, has garnered admiration. As the Thunder continue to excel, their authenticity and team spirit are likely to win over more fans. Despite potential animosity from other teams, the Thunder's unique blend of personality and performance is set to make them a beloved team in the NBA.

UK Government Unveils Record £8.4bn Road Maintenance Plan as Part of £27bn Investment

The UK government has announced a record £8.4bn investment in road maintenance in England as part o…
The UK government has pledged to invest a record £8.4bn in road maintenance in England, as part of a broader £27bn five-year investment plan for major roads and motorways. The plan, known as RIS3, aims to 'fix the foundations' of England's road network, with a focus on resurfacing a quarter of the country's strategic road network. The investment includes £1.65bn of initial public funding for the Lower Thames Crossing, a major road building project aimed at easing congestion in the south-east. The government also confirmed funding for the dualling of the A66 between Cumbria and North Yorkshire, a long-debated project championed by former prime minister Rishi Sunak.Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said the investment would 'secure the future of our road network for years to come' and deliver 'smoother and faster journeys for drivers'. However, campaigners from the Transport Action Network criticized the plan, arguing that it prioritizes new road construction over sustainable transport solutions and fails to address outdated traffic forecasts. The Department for Transport said the £8.4bn investment in A-roads and motorways was on top of the £7.3bn pledged in the spending review for local authorities to fix potholes and maintain local roads. The government claims that the 16 funded schemes have been chosen for their value for money and deliverability, and are expected to 'deliver growth for left-behind communities'. However, campaigners argue that the plan's focus on new road construction will only serve to increase congestion and harm the environment.

In a match against Galatasaray, Salah scored a goal, showcasing the skills that have made him a legend at Anfield. Throughout his time at Liverpool, Salah has been part of two great trios: the forward line with Sadio Mané and Robert Firmino, and the right side with Jordan Henderson and Trent Alexander-Arnold. His ability to score goals and create chances has been crucial to the team's success.
