The Reality of Food Inflation

Food inflation in the UK was 3% in April, and while it is expected to rise in coming months due to increasing energy, transport, and fertilizer costs, the country is not in a state of emergency. The Competition and Markets Authority found in 2024 that there was no evidence that groceries inflation was being driven by weak competition between retailers. Instead, prices are already depressed due to everyday competition among retailers.

The Impact of Price Caps
