Clarke insists that the ECB's financial modeling presented a bleak picture if they were to accept Channel 4's bid. "We worked out that at least seven counties would have had to close, and I'm being very serious here. We would have had to cut back on our youth programmes and we couldn't see what we could fund. The game as we knew it, in the opinion of the guys who did the financial modeling, would not exist." In negotiations with Vic Wakeling, Sky's head of sport, Clarke insisted the ECB would need more money if they were to justify the decision to take live cricket off free-to-air. "We sat Vic down and said, 'If you don't [increase your offer], we aren't going to consider doing this with you. You've got to give us a better reason.' We got Sky to increase their bid by £30m. I think we did a bloody good job on the money." The Audience Impact and Accessibility Concerns Channel 4 had innovated in areas that had never been touched before, according to Mark Nicholas, Channel 4's frontman across their seven years as the home of Test cricket in the UK. "We made the game more accessible by the way that we styled it, so it didn't feel too elitist or too difficult." Having won the broadcasting rights before the 1999 season, the same summer that England were defeated by New Zealand on home soil to become officially the worst Test side in the world, Channel 4 brought viewers the team's subsequent rise under Nasser Hussain and then Michael Vaughan, culminating in the Ashes triumph of 2005 when a peak audience of 8.4 million tuned in to watch Ashley Giles and Matthew Hoggard clinch a nail-biter at Trent Bridge. When England sealed the deal at The Oval just over a week later, Channel 4 reported their highest-rating day ever – at 23.2%, the channel's total share of all TV viewing broke the record set by the Big Brother final three years earlier. By then the ink had dried on the ECB's contract with Sky. The Divisive Legacy of the Decision Channel 4 released a statement saying they hoped the ECB "would not come to regret its decision to turn its back on the hundreds of hours of terrestrial exposure that Channel 4 was offering". Their innovative coverage had been widely lauded since they had usurped the BBC to win the broadcasting rights alongside Sky in a two-pronged deal that involved the latter showing one home Test match each summer between 1999 and 2005. Speaking to key figures involved at the time, it's clear that passions still run high. There remains a sense of animosity between the different camps, accusations of underhand PR campaigns, and a refusal to accept that the other side may have a point. There are legacies to protect. In a sense, it's English cricket's Brexit. "We were faced with a horrendous situation but there was no doubt in the minds of all of us who were involved, and there was no doubt in our minds 15 years later, that we did the only thing we could do," says Giles Clarke, reflecting on the deal he struck with Sky 22 years ago. "There have been a lot of lies and rubbish said about this. Channel 4 did not bid for all the Test matches – they only wanted the second series each summer. The BBC said they were not going to bid two days before the did date for bids. Sky had bid for absolutely everything." The Future Outlook for Cricket Broadcasting More than 20 years later, it remains one of English cricket's most divisive and controversial decisions. Did taking live cricket off free-to-air TV secure the future of the English game, or hold it back at exactly the moment it was ready to fly? "When they did the deal in 2004 for 2006 to 2009, they actually only got £55m per year," said Terry Blake, the TCCB's marketing manager and then ECB's commercial director between 1989 and 2003. "So for £10m per year more, which no doubt helped Giles Clarke secure his chairmanship for years to come, they moved it off free-to-air television altogether. I would turn it round and say: imagine the audiences we would have grown and the interest we would have had at the grassroots level had we stayed on free-to-air, even if we'd had to take a slight drop from the £45m per year [received from the 2002-05 deal with Sky and Channel 4]. Whatever money was put into the grassroots because of additional money from Sky, it could never replace the top-down approach." "The music, the graphics, the commentary team, the public's love of it – it had become really rather special," recalls Nicholas. "It was a bit of a cult. The coverage in 2005 was probably universally appreciated more than any other at that stage, so much so that even Kerry Packer in Australia was saying, 'How come they're doing it better than we're doing it?' When you give something such a deep dive, and you're going so well with it, and you feel like you've got so much left to do, it's difficult to stomach that the rights have moved on."

The Masterpiece of John Woo The title of this 1990 John Woo extravaganza might lead the uninitiated to expect a chillingly focused, targeted assassination. Actually, there are innumerable bullets and innumerable heads in this over-the-top gonzo spectacle. It is a crime thriller, a wartime action film set in Vietnam, but it offers something other than the usual Hollywood perspective; it is a parable of greed comparable to The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, and even a kind of romantic melodrama. The Symbolic Bullet There is, however, one key bullet in a head, a literal bullet lodged in the skull of someone who achieves a macabre zombie-like semi-survival, the bullet being symbolic of the way violence takes root in the brain, dehumanising its victim. The final “boardroom” scene disclosing this image is toweringly mad and strange. Yet in this movie, as in so many other Woo films, we can see how the director counterintuitively uses sad music – harmonica, woodwind – over grisly, brutal action sequences, as if what he wants us to register is not the violence or the shock but just how poignantly futile and pathetic it all is. The Plot Unfolds The setting is – initially – late 60s Hong Kong; Tony Leung plays Ben, a young guy getting married to his sweetheart Jane (Fennie Yuen), and on hand are his buddies Frank (Jacky Cheung) and Paul (Waise Lee). This trio are involved in a gang war with a rival mob who corner Frank when he has gone to get cash from the local moneylender to pay for the wedding. The confrontation ends in violence and, simply to get away and avoid the heat – Woo has a cameo as a police inspector – the three guys accept a crooked job from a local gang boss smuggling contraband pharmaceuticals in Vietnam. The Climax In Saigon, all their plans explode in pure anarchy; they are at first arrested under suspicion of working for the Vietcong, then upgrade their strategy to cynical arms smuggling for the North Vietnamese, and stealing the gold belonging to the local wiseguy who was supposed to be distributing their drugs. They make contact with a worldly fixer called Luke (Simon Yam), who has a Catherine Deneuve poster in his apartment, and also gallantly undertake to rescue a Hong Kong singer Sally (Yolinda Yam), who has been trafficked to Vietnam to sell sex. They end up on the spectacular field of battle itself (with helicopters, explosions, burning villages), where Paul, increasingly obsessed with the gold, finds himself at a key moment at mortal risk of detection if he cannot keep the wounded Frank quiet, whose cries of pain might alert the enemy to their position. The Legacy It’s an extraordinary, uninhibited barnstormer from Woo, who takes us from regular, domestic crime to military chaos with confidence and sweep. One moment, in which someone stands in front of a tank, even appears to echo the Tiananmen Square protests. No one else could have made it. The Release Bullet in the Head is in UK cinemas from 1 June, and on 4K UHD and Blu-ray from 22 June.

The Coach's Vision Jesse Marsch's first venture into international management has been a successful one, but not one he found easy to adjust to. "From the moment I worked with this group of players in the first camp, I knew I was going to fall in love with these guys," he says. "They are a unique group of really good people, who are very talented, and when I said goodbye to them it was different from what I was used to as a head coach in the club game." Marsch has enjoyed those gaps in his schedule, using time to visit Canadian players across the world and spending a lot of time in the country at the provincial level to help bring a more united approach to the way the game is developed and governed. Star Player's Return Questioned The captain, Alphonso Davies, has not played for Canada since tearing his ACL against USA in the Nations League third-place match last March. Whether to play him at left-back or on the wing has been one of the biggest questions for years, but under Marsch the Bayern Munich man has predominantly been used at the back and has been excellent. However, another injury setback, against Paris St-Germain in the Champions League semi-final second leg – his third in the past three months – has put his participation for the opening game against Bosnia and Herzegovina in doubt. He has started 12 of 29 internationals in the Marsch-era at the time of writing. One to Watch Few players have received more work and attention from his national coach than the midfielder Ismaël Koné, who was dropped during the Copa América as he struggled to make an impact. Since then he has been excellent for Sassuolo in Serie A and has turned into a dynamic box-to-box midfielder for Marsch, learning valuable lessons defensively in Italy, where his discipline and tactical concentration has improved significantly. Expected to start next to the excellent Stephen Eustáquio in a key double-pivot tandem for Canada. Unsung Hero Norwich's Ali Ahmed has become a favourite of Marsch's because of his selfless work on the pitch. One of the reasons Marsch has not deployed Davies further forward is because he views his team without the ball more than with it and in that vision the former Vancouver Whitecaps man is crucial. Probable Starting XI Canada's likely formation for the World Cup matches will be based on the 4-4-2 system that Marsch has consistently employed, with specific attention to defensive structure and pressing from the front. Fan Expectations Canada is ready to host the world, but the attention is more on this team than other games happening in the country. Being the only side to start on the east coast and move directly to the west coast allows fans in Toronto and Vancouver to watch their team in the group stages. The supporters group The Voyageurs will lead the noise with their flags and chants of "Ooh, Ahh Canada". Not my kind of crowd at all but I'd rather have them on my team than not."Themes of Toxic MasculinityNiall struggles with his sexuality to the extent that he undergoes conversion therapy. As a straight man, Bell felt an acute sense of responsibility portraying that. "It's the centre of the character," he says. "The basis of all his issues. I took that very seriously. Niall's self-hate goes beyond shame or societal pressure. Somehow, his own sexuality doesn't sit right within his worldview. That, to me, is beyond sad. 'Be yourself' is the simplest advice yet at times, the hardest to adhere to." As a result of his turmoil, Niall goes to some dark places sexually. "Because of his repression, everything is guarded and hidden. That becomes the excitement. It's an addiction. He gets a kick from dangerous sex."With its portrayal of male rage and damaged antiheroes, Half Man taps into debates about toxic masculinity. Does Bell believe his gender is in crisis? "Look at who are the majority transgressors in this world," he says. "It's men, on all fronts – not just misogyny but conflict, crime, everything. It's important to shine a light on that. Sabalenka's Dominant Performance World number one and last year’s defeated finalist Aryna Sabalenka blazed through her opening round at the French Open as she brushed aside Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro 6-4 6-2 in just 75 minutes. The Match in Detail Sabalenka, who is still seeking her first Roland Garros title, raced to a 4-0 lead on a sun-kissed Court Philippe Chatrier on Tuesday before unforced errors crept into her game, which allowed her opponent to pull two breaks back and serve for 5-5. She promptly broke back against the world number 50 in the next game to seal the win, before rubbing an ice bag over her face and exiting the court. “Happy to be back, thank you for the support. It’s a hot day, thank you so much for staying and don’t forget guys, stay hydrated,” Sabalenka told the spectators on centre court as a heatwave continues to roll over Paris for the start of the tournament. “I think we all feel pressure… But I’m used to it so I know how to ignore (it).” Improvement on Clay Of her return to winning ways on clay, Sabelenka said: “That’s the most enjoyable part of the game that I can come to the net to play points there, it’s so much fun. “I’m so happy I was able to improve on that part of the game and bring it on court,” she added.
