Spotting the Rare Blue Micromoon This Weekend

This weekend the night sky will showcase a blue micromoon – a rare alignment of a second full moon in a calendar month and a moon at its most distant point from Earth.Understanding the Dual Phenomenon: Blue Moon Meets MicromoonA "monthly blue moon" occurs when a second full moon appears in the same calendar month, as explained by Dr Greg Brown of the Royal Observatory Greenwich. A micromoon happens when the full moon coincides with the moon’s apogee, making it appear roughly 6% smaller than a typical full moon and about 14% smaller than a supermoon.Numbers Behind the Rarity: Frequency and Size DifferencesBlue moons: roughly every 2‑3 years.Micromoons: 2‑3 times per year.Combined blue micromoon: about once every 20‑30 years.Size reduction: ~6% smaller than average full moon, ~14% smaller than a supermoon. Why Stargazers Should Take Note: Visibility and Cultural ContextThe full moon peaks on 31 May at 9.45am BST (4.45am ET, 6.45pm AEST). For observers in the UK the moon will have set, but it remains visible throughout the night on Saturday and Sunday, appearing lower in the northern hemisphere sky and higher in the southern hemisphere. The event also revives the “once in a blue moon” expression, though the phrase likely stems from the rarer blue‑tinged moon caused by atmospheric particles.Looking Ahead: When the Next Blue Micromoon Might AppearAccording to Brown, the next UK blue micromoon is projected for 2066, while parts of the US may see one as early as 2053. Until then, enthusiasts can enjoy this once‑in‑a‑few‑decades spectacle.

NASA Picks Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin for First Uncrewed Lunar Mission

NASA announced that Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin has been chosen to fly the first of three uncrewed lun…
Lead: NASA’s New Moon‑Base MilestoneNASA revealed that Blue Origin will conduct the first uncrewed lunar lander mission in a series of three scheduled for 2026, marking the agency’s initial move toward a $20 bn moon base. The decision, announced by NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman, places Bezos’s company ahead of SpaceX for this critical early contract.Blue Origin Secures First Uncrewed Moon Base MissionThe award designates Blue Origin’s Endurance cryogenic cargo lander to deliver scientific payloads to the Shackleton‑de Gerlache Ridge at the lunar south pole. The mission, targeted for launch as early as fall 2026, will be the first privately funded lunar lander flight in history.Contract awarded to Blue Origin over competing bids.Mission to test critical capabilities for future human‑landing systems.Part of a broader NASA roadmap that includes more than a dozen additional lunar missions through the decade.Financial Terms and Timeline of the 2026 Lunar MissionsNASA has allocated $230.4 million for each of the first two moon‑base missions, with the agency covering the majority of operational costs.Funding per mission: $230.4 million.2026 schedule: Three uncrewed missions, followed by “more than a dozen” missions in subsequent years.Related contracts: Smaller awards to Lunar Outpost, Firefly Aerospace, and other private firms supporting lunar‑to‑Mars projects.Strategic Implications for U.S. Lunar Ambitions and Private Space CompetitionThe selection underscores the Trump administration’s push to accelerate the Artemis program and establish a permanent lunar presence ahead of China. By leveraging private industry, NASA aims to lower taxpayer costs, stimulate a space‑economy job market, and maintain U.S. leadership in deep‑space exploration.Creates a direct competitive dynamic between Blue Origin and SpaceX for future crewed lander contracts (Artemis III, Artemis IV).Supports the “blueprint for an enduring lunar presence” with a target of operational capability by 2029‑2032.Aligns with national space policy goals of a “golden age of exploration” and a semi‑permanent lunar settlement. What Lies Ahead for NASA’s Moon Base and Commercial Lander DevelopmentFollowing the 2026 uncrewed flights, NASA will evaluate the performance of both Blue Origin’s Blue Moon lander and SpaceX’s Starship HLS during the Artemis III test mission in low‑Earth orbit. Successful demonstrations are expected to pave the way for crewed landings on Artemis IV (planned for 2028) and the eventual construction of Moon Base One.Industry observers anticipate that continued private‑sector involvement will accelerate technology maturation, reduce launch costs, and expand the commercial market for lunar payload services, setting the stage for a sustained human presence on the Moon.

Rare Blue Moon Occurs This Week, Highlighting Calendar Quirks

This week's full moon is a rare blue moon, occurring as the second full moon in a calendar month. T…
The Blue Moon Phenomenon This week’s full moon is a blue moon. The term does not describe the colour of the moon, but instead arises from the way we define our calendar in reference to the stars rather than the moon. Lunar Cycles and Calendar Definitions The moon takes almost a month to circle our planet. The exact time is 29.5 days but if we were to define our calendar as 12 lunar months, the year would fall short by around 11 days. Thus, the calendar would fall out of step with the seasons. The Astronomical Implications By defining our year by how long it takes for the stars to return to their same positions in the sky, we must accept that some years will have 13 full moons instead of 12. The extra full moon is the blue moon, defined as the second full moon in a calendar month. Multiple Definitions of a Blue Moon Having had one full moon already on 1 May, the second one on 31 May this week is the blue one. There is, however, another way to define a blue moon. There is a stricter astronomical way to define a blue moon, known as the seasonal method, but by this reckoning the full moon this week is not blue. Instead, we would have to wait for the full moon on 20 May 2027.

Manchester City Fans Pay Emotional Tribute to Pep Guardiola in Final Match

Manchester City fans bid an emotional farewell to manager Pep Guardiola after his decade-long tenur…
The Emotional Farewell to a Legend"I'm utterly devastated and have already shed tears," says Manchester City fan Sophie Hope. There is a feeling of loss around the Etihad Stadium, a bereavement that everyone knew was coming but it does not make it any easier to take. The ownership may disagree but this is the club that Pep Guardiola built over the past 10 years and everyone in attendance against Aston Villa on Sunday wanted to pay their respects. This has been a glorious epoch for the club, one that has seen complete and utter misery in modern times. Relegation to the third tier at Stoke, being regularly pummelled by Manchester United and York City away are long forgotten. The transformation was under way before Guardiola arrived a decade ago and everything has been geared towards his demands and needs. Ilkay Gündogan, Ederson and Fernandinho were back as City's greatest hits were played. The Guardiola Era at Manchester City"To say City is part of my DNA is not overstating it," Hope says. "I feel I need to try and remember that it's football but it's also not just football, it's family, it's special and Pep has brought such a huge level of enjoyment, excitement, joy and pride to our club."I've been going to City for 36 years and our next manager will be the first my dad won't have known, he died in 2021. I have to remind myself of all the good times. The happiness Pep has brought to me, my life, to Manchester will never be replicated or forgotten."The Transformation of Manchester CityGuardiola created a magical mystical tour for City, taking the masses on triumphant tours to Real Madrid and a plethora of other of Europe's most historical venues, leaving having not just won but shown complete dominance. None will be more memorable than Istanbul, City's first Champions League trophy, won thanks to Rodri on an edgy night against Inter."Pep took us into a footballing galaxy that only a handful of teams in world football will ever experience," Andy Hooper says. "I think back to watching hundreds of games at Maine Road with my grandad. Together we never even reached a major semi-final, but did witness us dropping to League One. He always told me we'd be back one day, and I believed him. Fast forward to the pinnacle of the Pep era: taking my seven-year-old lad to Istanbul to watch us complete the treble. Pep's not just been our manager he's all of us, you can tell he feels it, he loves the place, sticks up for us against anything thrown at us, he will be for ever our boss. He completed our journey from the Peter Swales lows to the ridiculous highs."The Emotional Tributes and FarewellSuccess changes lives, even if it is enjoyed vicariously through the local football club. Guardiola has improved the existence of tens of thousands, finding joy in the style and trophy lifts. Everyone has embraced the "Catalan Manc," enjoying his love of the city, living in the centre of it, becoming friends with the Gallagher brothers and references to local culture. "People called Mourinho the special one, but he's got nothing on Pep," says Hope. "He clearly loves Manchester, embracing it as his city. That's how we feel about Pep, he's our Pep."Many of those in love with Guardiola will get to sit in the newly expanded North Stand named in his honour, helping secure a record Etihad Stadium attendance of 60,332, a fitting way to go out. It was unveiled on Sunday while a statue will be erected somewhere in the vicinity to immortalise the immortal to ensure that some things are eternal. The Legacy of Pep GuardiolaAll the Guardiola collectibles were on sale, from flags to scarves and plenty in between, while one group in the East Stand stood resplendent in T-shirts spelling out "Gracies Pep" to show their appreciation in his native Catalan. A mural depicting Guardiola now sits resplendent on the side of a house opposite the ground but there is no chance of him being forgotten.Fans will probably be clubbing together to see if they can find the land of the coconuts where Guardiola will be sunning himself over the summer. At the very least, they initiated Guardiola's new life with the palm trees by bouncing beach balls around the stands.Guardiola should have brought his own tissues, with eyes watering when he embraced another departing legend Bernardo Silva after bringing the captain off. Without a handkerchief in sight, Guardiola was forced to use his Pep-branded T-shirt to wipe away the tears. The Portuguese was given a standing ovation and guard of honour from the two teams and it seemed to finally dawn on Guardiola when he embraced the man that has provided immaculate service for nine seasons. Shortly afterwards John Stones got the same combination of standing ovation and guard of honour. "We've got Guardiola," rang out repeatedly as the head coach absorbed it for one final time, weeping. The Blue Moon has reached its highest under Guardiola, and it will rise again at Manchester City but it will never shine as bright. Guardiola finished with: "In the next years, if you see me in the States or Europe or somewhere and you are a Man City fan, come and hug me. I will need it." So will they.

SpaceX Launches Most Powerful Starship Yet in Test Flight

SpaceX launched its most powerful Starship yet on a test flight from Texas, a crucial step towards …
The Launch of Starship V3 SpaceX launched its biggest, most powerful Starship yet on a test flight Friday, an upgraded version that NASA is counting on to land astronauts on the moon. The redesigned mega-rocket made its debut two days after SpaceX CEO Elon Musk announced he’s taking the company public. It blasted off from the southern tip of Texas, carrying 20 mock Starlink satellites for release halfway around the world. Key Features of the Upgraded Starship At 407ft (124 meters), the latest model eclipses the older Starship lines by several feet and packs more engine thrust. Starship is meant to be fully reusable, with giant mechanical arms at the launchpads to catch the returning rocket stages. The Significance of the Test Flight This marks the 12th test flight of the rocket that Musk is building to get people to Mars one day. But first comes the moon and NASA’s Artemis program. NASA is paying SpaceX billions of dollars – and also Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin – to provide the lunar landers that will be used to land Artemis astronauts on the moon. The Future of Lunar Missions A moon landing by two astronauts – Artemis IV – could follow as soon as 2028 using either Starship or Blue Moon, whichever lander is safer and ready first. It will be NASA’s first lunar landing with a crew since 1972’s Apollo 17. The goal this time is a moon base near the lunar south pole, staffed by astronauts as well as robots.

Australian Indie Game Mixtape: A Nostalgic Blast from the 80s and 90s

Mixtape, a new Australian indie game, is a narrative adventure game that explores a night of youthf…
The Concept of Mixtape Mixtape, the second game from Melbourne-based studio Beethoven and Dinosaur, is a narrative adventure game about Stacy Rockford, a teenage girl in the fictional 90s American suburban town of Blue Moon Lagoon. The Gameplay Experience The game's soundtrack is Stacy's mixtape, which she explains and dissects with direct-to-camera addresses throughout the game. This is a work of magical realism, mixing together disparate gameplay elements and storytelling devices to explore a night of youthful excess as Stacy and her friends try to craft a perfect celebration. The Soundtrack The soundtrack features Roxy Music, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Portishead, the Jesus and Mary Chain and more than 20 other bands. Galvatron was inspired by the soundtrack to the 2001 cult classic Donnie Darko: “It’s not all these bands’ No 1 songs, it’s their deeper cuts.” The Nostalgia Mixtape is deeply rooted in a nostalgia for 80s and 90s US pop culture, despite being made by a 12-person team in Australia. The biggest touchpoints are the movies and music Galvatron enjoyed in his youth: Dazed and Confused, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, High Fidelity, Wayne’s World. The Future “I think one day we’ll make a game set in Australia,” Galvatron says. “But sometimes the game just tells you what it needs to be. The story drags you in one direction, and that’s where it took us.”
