Chris Evans' Low‑Budget ‘TFI Friday Unplugged’ Struggles to Revive 90s Chatshow Magic

Chris Evans has taken the 1990s‑era TFI Friday back to YouTube and now Channel 4, but the stripped‑…
Chris Evans’ attempt to resurrect the 1990s chatshow juggernaut TFI Friday began quietly on Virgin Radio’s YouTube channel earlier this year. The lo‑fi series, titled TFI: Unplugged, featured a handful of high‑profile guests – Danny Dyer, Chris Hemsworth, Bono and Noah Wyle – and quickly attracted enough viewers for Channel 4 to commission six late‑night episodes. While the media spotlight has been on Claudia Winkleman’s foray into celebrity interviewing, Evans’ revival arrives with far less fanfare and pressure. The new format is deliberately stripped back: a cramped studio, casually dressed staff, and a budget that Evans himself jokes is “only 1% of the original”. Channel 4 commissioning editor Cimran Shah pitched the show as “personality‑led, stripped‑back chat”, positioning it as a precursor to today’s visual podcasts. In practice, the production feels more like a video‑recorded audio interview than a full‑blown TV spectacle. The episode lineup mixes legacy and fresh talent. Vintage performances from Sleeper, The Cure and Garbage provide a nostalgic soundtrack, while contemporary guests such as Jack Savoretti – who Evans repeatedly hails for a recent chart‑topping album – and Indian star Shreya Ghoshal, who covers Coldplay’s “Fix You”, aim to broaden appeal. A promised appearance by Gemma Arterton and Peter Capaldi never materialised; instead, singer‑songwriter Sam Ryder appeared despite having lost his voice. One of the few moments that truly harkens back to the original is a splice of Evans’ 1999 interview with David Bowie, in which the legendary musician bizarrely claims to have contracted gastroenteritis from eating monkey meat. The clip underscores Evans’ desire to remind viewers of the show’s storied past, even if the anecdote feels more odd than iconic. Critics note that the new Unplugged version lacks the “laddish, often cruel humour” that defined the 1990s TFI Friday, including infamous segments like the “Fat Lookalikes”. The original’s chaotic energy and Britpop‑fuelled vibe have been replaced by a more restrained, if still frenetic, studio atmosphere. In terms of relevance, the series appears out of step with current trends. Unlike interview podcasts that create an intimate, off‑camera feel, Evans’ format retains the sweaty, over‑the‑top live‑TV aesthetic without delivering the depth or novelty that modern audiences expect. Overall, TFI Friday Unplugged may not reshape the UK chatshow landscape or outshine Winkleman’s high‑profile debut, but it does carve out a modest niche for nostalgia‑driven viewers. Its inexpensive production model proves sustainable, even if the show remains a modest footnote in the broader revival of British talk‑show culture.

Lebanon Ceasefire Holds Amid Fragile Peace Talks Between Israel and Hezbollah

A 10-day ceasefire has been brokered between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon, but the situation rem…
The recent ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon has brought a temporary halt to the fighting, but the situation on the ground remains volatile. Despite US President Donald Trump's claim that it is the 10th war he has ended, the stability of the region is far from assured.Israeli troops have remained in their positions deep in Lebanon, and Hezbollah fighters have stated that their fingers 'remained on the triggers,' indicating a readiness to resume hostilities if necessary. The ceasefire was imposed from above, with each side firing off as many bombs, drones, and rockets as they could before it came into effect. The agreement aims to facilitate direct negotiations between the Lebanese and Israeli governments, a significant achievement in itself as they have not spoken directly in decades. However, the path to a lasting peace is fraught with challenges, including the status of Hezbollah's arms and Israel's continued occupation of southern Lebanon. The negotiators face a daunting task in achieving 'lasting peace' between the two countries, with the goal of ensuring the Lebanese government has the exclusive monopoly of force in its territory and a formal demarcation of a contested border. Sustained international focus will be crucial in maintaining the peace talks, or else the war could easily resume. In Israel, there is pressure to continue the war in Lebanon, with many residents of northern Israel wanting the conflict to finally end the threat from Hezbollah. Israeli officials have boasted of military victory over Hezbollah but have also implied that the war could resume if their demands are not met by Lebanon.

Bournemouth on the brink of appointing Marco Rose as head coach for 2026‑27 campaign

AFC Bournemouth are close to confirming former Dortmund boss Marco Rose as their new manager, succe…
After intensive negotiations, AFC Bournemouth appear set to secure Marco Rose as their next head coach, with an agreement in principle already reached. Rose, the 49‑year‑old German who last managed RB Leipzig until March 2025, will replace Andoni Iraola when his contract expires this summer.Bournemouth’s head of football operations, Tiago Pinto, moved quickly after learning of Iraola’s decision to pursue a new challenge. While the club initially explored a move for Ipswich Town’s Kieran McKenna, the hefty buyout clause attached to his contract made the Rose option more viable.Rose’s availability after a year out of work simplifies the deal, allowing him to begin planning for the 2026‑27 season immediately. The club hopes he can sustain the momentum built by Iraola, who has overseen a remarkable rise since his summer 2023 appointment, including a stunning victory over Arsenal and a genuine bid for European qualification for the first time in the club’s history.Despite selling a substantial portion of their squad – notably losing three‑quarters of their back four last summer and seeing winger Antoine Semenyo depart for Manchester City in January – Bournemouth have benefited from shrewd recruitment, recouping high fees and reinvesting in quality replacements. A looming challenge for Rose will be to fend off interest in midfielder Alex Scott, with Chelsea reportedly among the suitors.Rose brings an impressive résumé, having guided Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League and worked alongside stars such as Erling Haaland and Jude Bellingham. His previous managerial stints include successful spells at RB Salzburg and Borussia Mönchengladbach, underscoring his experience at the highest levels of European football.

Majority of Britons Back Rejoining EU, Poll Reveals

A recent poll indicates that over half of British voters support rejoining the EU, with strong back…
A significant 53% of all voters support a full return to the EU, with 83% of Labour voters, 84% of Liberal Democrat voters, and 82% of Green party voters backing the policy. In contrast, only 39% of Conservative voters and 18% of Reform voters support rejoining the EU.Labour's approach to EU relations has been described as 'muted' and may risk losing support among progressive voters and in 'red wall' constituencies. The party's policy is to align with, but not join, the single market, which means it has no say in shaping regulations and directives.Experts warn that Labour's strategy may be flawed, as the loss of the liberal voter base on issues like Brexit could be more damaging than the loss to pro-Brexit parties. Neil Kinnock, the former Labour leader, believes that Labour will one day campaign for rejoining the EU, but did not provide a timeline.Anand Menon, director of UK in a Changing Europe, argues that Labour's position on EU relations is contradictory and economically unsustainable. He suggests that aligning with EU regulation would require constant monitoring to prevent accidental divergence.

2026 Could Be the Decisive Year for Saving Dying Coral Reefs, Says Jason Momoa

Actor and UNEP advocate Jason Momoa warns that coral reefs face near‑extinction as the planet endur…
From my home in Hawai‘i, the reef is more than a backdrop—it feeds families, shields shorelines, and anchors our culture. Today that vital connection is under unprecedented threat. Scientists report the most extensive coral‑bleaching episode ever recorded, persisting for 33 months into 2025. At a projected 1.5 °C rise in global temperatures, the IPCC warns that up to 90% of the world’s coral reefs could disappear. That temperature threshold is not a distant projection; it is looming now. Even if climate targets are eventually met, reefs continue to be battered by plastic waste, coastal development, agricultural runoff, and overfishing. Their degradation weakens natural storm barriers, leaving coastal communities more vulnerable to floods and erosion, jeopardising homes, jobs, and cultural heritage. In Hawai‘i we speak of kuleana—a generational duty to protect what sustains us. That principle must expand to every person on the planet: caring for reefs is caring for ourselves. On the ground, communities in French Polynesia have shown that, when equipped with the right tools, they can actively restore damaged reefs. Likewise, my collaboration with the Global Fund for Coral Reefs and the UN Environment Programme demonstrates how targeted financing can create sustainable livelihoods, boost marine conservation, and help coastal societies rebound after extreme weather. Time, however, is not on our side. The next twelve months could become a defining turning point for coral ecosystems. New scientific findings and a series of high‑profile gatherings—including the Kenya Ocean Conference, the International Coral Reef Symposium in New Zealand, and the upcoming Global Coral Reef Summit—will focus world attention on reef survival. The responsibility now lies with governments, businesses, and individuals alike. Proven actions include: cutting carbon footprints, eliminating plastic leakage, protecting keystone species, supporting reef‑positive enterprises, investing in resilient coastal economies, enacting protective legislation, and amplifying public advocacy. Moments like 2026 are not just about pledges; they are about swift, measurable change. Coral reefs cannot wait for perfect plans—they need us to act now, embodying the spirit of kuleana for the sake of our children and the ocean that sustains us. Jason Momoa is an actor, filmmaker, and UNEP Advocate for Life Below Water, dedicated to protecting oceans and raising global awareness of coral‑reef conservation.

Angelina Jolie’s Personal Turn Elevates ‘Couture’ While the Film Stumbles on Fashion Depth

In ‘Couture’, Angelina Jolie channels her own double‑mastectomy experience into a poignant performa…
Angelina Jolie leads the new fashion‑driven drama Couture, bringing a rare level of personal honesty by confronting a storyline that mirrors her own double mastectomy performed to prevent breast cancer. While her performance is undeniably courageous, the film’s overall execution falls short of its ambitions. The plot follows Maxine, an American indie filmmaker (Jolie) who arrives in Paris to direct the opening short for a prestigious runway show. She discovers, through a compassionate doctor played by Vincent Lindon, that a recent biopsy confirms she has breast cancer, forcing her to consider postponing or abandoning her next project. Jolie conveys the shock and denial with subtlety, yet the script, penned by director Alice Winocour, often lapses into glib dialogue that undermines the emotional weight of the situation.Supporting characters include Ada, a fledgling South Sudanese model (Anyier Anei), makeup‑artist‑turned‑writer Angèle (Ella Rumpf), and the brooding first‑assistant director Anton (Louis Garrel). Their subplots—most notably Ada’s ankle injury that threatens the runway performance—remain underdeveloped, serving more as decorative set‑pieces than integral narrative threads.Visually, the film captures the glamour of Parisian haute couture with polished cinematography, yet this sheen accentuates the story’s lack of depth. The fashion world is presented with a “precious” aesthetic that feels specious, offering little insight beyond surface‑level allure.Despite these shortcomings, Jolie’s star power shines through. Her willingness to align a fictional role with a deeply personal health battle adds a layer of authenticity that the surrounding screenplay fails to sustain. ‘Couture’ will be available on digital platforms from 20 April, offering audiences a chance to appreciate Jolie’s performance even if the film’s broader ambitions remain unfulfilled.
