Philippines Building Collapse Death Toll Rises to 3, 17 Missing

A building under construction in the Philippines collapsed, killing 3 people and leaving 17 missing…
The Building Collapse in Angeles City Rescuers have pulled two people from the rubble of a collapsed building under construction in the Philippines, bringing the death toll to three, officials have said, as crews continue search and rescue operations at the site. Rescue Efforts and Casualties One of the two victims had a pulse when he was retrieved, but later died, while another suffered cardiac arrest while still trapped, Maria Leah Sajili, an information officer at Bureau of Fire Protection, said in a phone interview with the Reuters news agency on Monday. 3 confirmed deaths 17 people missing, most of them construction workers Up to 70 people were employed at the construction site The Investigation and Challenges Officials said an investigation is under way into what caused the collapse of the multistorey building in the city of Angeles, north of the capital, Manila. Sajili said there could be more victims trapped, after thermal scans detected signs of breathing and heartbeats beneath the rubble. Rescue in building collapse is very challenging, since any sudden shift triggered by the movements of our rescuers can cause areas to move and people under can get crushed. The Impact on Families and Community Families have grown increasingly impatient and frustrated with the pace of the search and rescue operations. Lea Casilao, who travelled from Manila, said she only wants regular updates about the status of her husband, a construction worker believed to be trapped beneath the rubble. “My youngest child keeps asking, but I do not have answers,” the 47-year-old said. The Future Outlook If no more survivors are found, mechanical diggers and other heavy equipment will be brought in to clear debris and recover bodies, Sajili said, but gave no timeline. The cause of the collapse is not known. Angeles City Mayor Carmelo Lazatin told reporters that authorities were trying to locate the building owner to get answers, including clarity on the number of workers at the site.

NRL CEO Andrew Abdo Resigns to Take Up Tennis Australia Role

National Rugby League CEO Andrew Abdo is resigning mid-season to take up a role with Tennis Austral…
The Sudden Departure of Andrew Abdo National Rugby League chief executive Andrew Abdo is set to make one of the great leaps across Australia’s sporting divide with reports linking him to a job with Tennis Australia. The Leadership Transition at NRL Abdo replaced Todd Greenberg as NRL chief executive in 2020 having spent much of the preceding decade in a commercial role at the organisation. Alongside influential Australian Rugby League Commission chair Peter V’landys, Abdo has consolidated rugby league’s financial health and expanded the competition’s footprint into Papua New Guinea and Western Australia. The Financial Impact of Leadership Changes Abdo's departure comes as negotiations intensify over the next NRL broadcast and player pay deals. Tennis Australia revenues are now around $700m per year, behind only the AFL and NRL among Australian sporting organisations. The Impact on Australian Sports Landscape Craig Tiley, chief executive at Tennis Australia, announced earlier this year he would be taking on the same role with the US Tennis Association. International executive recruitment firm Egon Zehnder has been responsible for finding Tiley’s replacement since his departure was announced in February. The Future of Tennis Australia Speculation around contenders to replace him included Tom Larner, the current chief tennis officer, chief of events Stephen Farrow, as well as Tennis Queensland chief executive, Cameron Pearson. Tiley’s departure, after more than two decades with Tennis Australia, represents a significant shift in the country’s sporting landscape.

Trump Insists He Makes No Bad Deals, Yet GOP Hawks Question His Iran Peace Pact

President Donald Trump defended a tentative US‑Iran agreement, claiming it isn’t a bad deal, while …
Trump’s Claimed Iran Deal and the Unfreezing of Iranian Assets On 24 May, Iran marked the anniversary of the liberation of Khorramshahr, while the United States appeared poised to sign a memorandum that would unfreeze billions of dollars in Iranian assets. Donald Trump insisted the arrangement is not a “bad deal,” arguing that it will restore commercial traffic through the Strait of Hormuz and ease pressure on the global economy. Financial Stakes: Billions Unfrozen and Economic Implications Unfreeze of Iranian assets: billions of dollars released upfront. Expected outcome: Gradual reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and return of commercial traffic to pre‑war levels. Potential concession points: Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium and a 60‑day discussion window on enrichment caps. Political Fallout Among GOP Hawks and Regional Actors Both Democrats and prominent Republican hawks—including Ted Cruz—have challenged Trump’s narrative, arguing the deal delivers little beyond what was already on the table in Geneva on 26 February. Critics such as former Obama adviser Ben Rhodes and Crisis Group’s Ali Vaez contend the agreement leaves the IRGC in control of Hormuz and fails to advance nuclear negotiations. Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi rejected media claims that Tehran had agreed to export enriched uranium or accept a ten‑year cap, emphasizing that any concession would be discussed only within a 60‑day framework. What the Next Steps Could Mean for US‑Iran Relations The memorandum signals a shift from a military‑focused strategy to diplomatic engagement, but several unresolved issues remain: Israel’s demand for language allowing military action in Lebanon remains contested. Negotiations between Iran and Oman on a Persian Gulf strait authority are ongoing, with disagreements over tolls. Domestic US support for Israel is waning, potentially limiting future U.S. pressure on Tehran. Analysts predict that if the asset unfreeze proceeds without substantive nuclear concessions, the deal may be viewed as a temporary band‑aid rather than a lasting resolution, keeping the region vulnerable to future diplomatic or military escalations.

Truck Drivers in Iowa Reeling from Gas Price Surge Amid Trump's Iran Conflict

Truck drivers in Iowa are facing financial hardship as gas prices surge following the US military a…
The Surge in Fuel CostsAt Iowa 80, the self-proclaimed largest truck stop in the world, drivers are facing unprecedented fuel costs. A gallon of regular gasoline recently reached $4.26, while diesel climbed to $5.72. These prices have increased sharply ever since the US joined Israel in attacking Iran and sparking a global energy crisis. The Global Energy CrisisThe military conflict has led to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway through which about 20% of the world's oil supply travels. This geopolitical disruption has created ripple effects throughout the global energy market, with analysts predicting that high gas prices could stick around as the summer travel season begins in the United States.Financial Toll on TruckersThe price increases have hit truck drivers particularly hard. Owner-operator Malvinder Grewal recently spent $809 to fill up his 18-wheeler, which was carrying a shipment expected to net him $2,550 for delivery to Ohio. Other drivers report similar financial strain, with diesel costs rising from around $80 to $125 per fill-up for some.Economic Ripple EffectsThe rising fuel costs are creating widespread economic impacts. As barber Angie Clark noted, "When gas goes up, that makes everything else go up, because everything is transported by truck." This inflationary effect threatens to increase costs of goods across multiple industries, potentially leading to price increases for consumers.Political FalloutThe gas price surge has coincided with declining approval ratings for President Trump. Recent polls show his approval ratings in the high 30-percentage point range, with voters' views of his economic handling hitting an all-time low. The administration has responded by approving fuel with higher ethanol content and potentially suspending the federal gas tax, though these measures may provide only temporary relief.Future OutlookIf the Strait of Hormuz remains closed, pump prices could break records in the coming months. The situation remains precarious for truck drivers and other transportation-dependent businesses, with many expressing frustration over the ongoing conflict and its economic consequences. The political implications may extend beyond the upcoming midterm elections as voters continue to feel the pinch at the pump.

Antonelli Seizes Canadian GP Victory as Russell's Engine Failure Hands Him Championship Lead

Kimi Antonelli claimed victory at the Canadian Grand Prix after teammate George Russell suffered a …
The LeadToo early to be decisive yet but without doubt George Russell was left cursing his damnable luck as his world championship ambitions took a body blow in Montreal. The British driver was left angry and disconsolate as his Mercedes ground to halt on track at the Canadian Grand Prix and his teammate and title-rival Kimi Antonelli powered to a record-breaking victory. The Montreal ShowdownRussell had claimed victory in the sprint race, then pole and then had an absolutely gripping, toe-to-toe with the 19-year-old for the opening 29 laps on the Île Notre-Dame. The pair had circulated within half a second of one another, trading the lead, repeatedly in what was an exemplary piece of racing. Russell had to pull some superb, resolved, defensive driving and Antonelli was as always an irrepressible force, a joy to behold. To and fro they darted against one another, neither perfect, both drivers suffered lock-ups and minor errors but neither could take a decisive advantage. It was glorious stuff with nothing to choose between them. The Engine Failure That Changed EverythingThe prospect of it heading to the flag as such was mouthwatering, only for Russell's world to fall apart in a scant few seconds. Out of nowhere he suddenly slowed and pulled off on lap 30 with an engine failure. An understandably angry Russell hurled his headrest from the car and stalked from it in disgust. He was left behind the fence, staring at the marshals pushing his stricken ride away and shaking his head in disbelief and frustration as Antonelli scampered off into a now unchallenged lead he held to the flag.Championship ImplicationsEighteen points behind before the race, Russell is now a full 43 back and when interviewed afterwards he admitted he could make no sense of this cruel fate in Montreal. "I'm a bit lost for words," he said. "I've got to be honest, I'm proud of my weekend: pole for the sprint race, won the sprint race, pole for the main race, I had a good battle with Kimi. From my side I don't think there was any more I could do. Of course I'm pretty frustrated by what's happened but what more could I do?"Historic Victory StreakAntonelli deserved the victory but would have enjoyed taking it to the end in a real scrap with his teammate, noting it was not the way he wanted to win. With it however the Italian has now taken four in a row after victories in China, Japan and Miami. A striking start in only second year in the sport. Indeed he is now the first driver to have scored his first four wins in the sport in succession.Teammate Rivalry IntensifiesThat the pair are going to be going at hard for the world championship this year is clear. They came together in the sprint race on Saturday, with Antonelli furious when he felt Russell has squeezed him off track. Mercedes held discussions with them afterwards with both declaring all was well between them but on Sunday they were at it again. As part of their gripping scrap, on lap 23 Antonelli locked-up at the hairpin, Russell pounced and the pair then brushed up against each other, trading paint at the final chicane.Mercedes' Response to Internal BattleMercedes promptly told their drivers to "tidy up the racing" with nerves jangling on the pit wall as the pair were warned the team would intervene if they did not. Mercedes' rules of engagement seem clear that they are free to race but cannot hit one another, an edict that may be increasingly hard to follow if the contest between them remains as tight going into the next 17 races as it was in Montreal.Other Race ResultsLewis Hamilton scored his best result for Ferrari after a superb fight with Max Verstappen to claim second from the Dutchman in the closing stages, while Verstappen was in fine form to take his first podium of 2026 for Red Bull.

Cuba Thanks China for Rice Shipment Amid Worsening Humanitarian Crisis

Cuba welcomed the arrival of the first Chinese rice shipment, a symbolic gesture of solidarity as the island grapples with severe food shortages and energy blackouts under intensified U.S. sanctions.China's First Rice Shipment Arrives in HavanaPresident Miguel Diaz‑Canel confirmed via social media that 15,000 tonnes of rice docked in Havana on May 23, 2026, marking the initial tranche of an expected 60,000‑tonne donation from Beijing.Shipment arrived at the Port of Havana, the island’s primary entry point for humanitarian aid.Diaz‑Canel expressed “deep gratitude” to China and to European Parliament members condemning U.S. pressure.Scale of the Aid: 15,000 Tonnes Delivered, 60,000 Tonnes PlannedThe rice shipment is part of a broader Chinese assistance package that also includes solar panels and other infrastructure support.15,000 tonnes delivered – first load.60,000 tonnes pledged – expected to arrive in subsequent shipments.China has previously donated solar panels to help modernise Cuba’s ageing energy grid.Geopolitical Ripples: U.S. Sanctions, Cuba's Pivot to BeijingSince January 2026, the United States has escalated sanctions, restricting oil exports and threatening penalties for countries supplying Cuba with energy resources.U.S. executive order labels Cuba an “unusual and extraordinary threat.”Only one Russian tanker has been allowed to deliver oil this year.Cuba now imports nearly 60% of its oil, according to the International Energy Agency.Facing a de‑facto oil blockade, Cuba is increasingly dependent on Chinese aid, a trend that challenges Washington’s strategy to curb China’s influence in Latin America.Future Outlook: Continued Chinese Support and U.S. PressureDiaz‑Canel warned that U.S. “maximum pressure” aims to portray a false narrative of imminent collapse, potentially paving the way for military options.China is expected to continue shipments of rice and energy‑related assistance. The U.S. may offer conditional humanitarian aid, as indicated by a recent $100 million proposal tied to political reforms.Regional dynamics will likely see Cuba deepening ties with Beijing while seeking diplomatic channels to mitigate U.S. sanctions. How the island navigates this geopolitical tug‑of‑war will shape its humanitarian outlook and broader Latin American alignments in the coming months.

Manchester City Fans Pay Emotional Tribute to Pep Guardiola in Final Match

Manchester City fans bid an emotional farewell to manager Pep Guardiola after his decade-long tenur…
The Emotional Farewell to a Legend"I'm utterly devastated and have already shed tears," says Manchester City fan Sophie Hope. There is a feeling of loss around the Etihad Stadium, a bereavement that everyone knew was coming but it does not make it any easier to take. The ownership may disagree but this is the club that Pep Guardiola built over the past 10 years and everyone in attendance against Aston Villa on Sunday wanted to pay their respects. This has been a glorious epoch for the club, one that has seen complete and utter misery in modern times. Relegation to the third tier at Stoke, being regularly pummelled by Manchester United and York City away are long forgotten. The transformation was under way before Guardiola arrived a decade ago and everything has been geared towards his demands and needs. Ilkay Gündogan, Ederson and Fernandinho were back as City's greatest hits were played. The Guardiola Era at Manchester City"To say City is part of my DNA is not overstating it," Hope says. "I feel I need to try and remember that it's football but it's also not just football, it's family, it's special and Pep has brought such a huge level of enjoyment, excitement, joy and pride to our club."I've been going to City for 36 years and our next manager will be the first my dad won't have known, he died in 2021. I have to remind myself of all the good times. The happiness Pep has brought to me, my life, to Manchester will never be replicated or forgotten."The Transformation of Manchester CityGuardiola created a magical mystical tour for City, taking the masses on triumphant tours to Real Madrid and a plethora of other of Europe's most historical venues, leaving having not just won but shown complete dominance. None will be more memorable than Istanbul, City's first Champions League trophy, won thanks to Rodri on an edgy night against Inter."Pep took us into a footballing galaxy that only a handful of teams in world football will ever experience," Andy Hooper says. "I think back to watching hundreds of games at Maine Road with my grandad. Together we never even reached a major semi-final, but did witness us dropping to League One. He always told me we'd be back one day, and I believed him. Fast forward to the pinnacle of the Pep era: taking my seven-year-old lad to Istanbul to watch us complete the treble. Pep's not just been our manager he's all of us, you can tell he feels it, he loves the place, sticks up for us against anything thrown at us, he will be for ever our boss. He completed our journey from the Peter Swales lows to the ridiculous highs."The Emotional Tributes and FarewellSuccess changes lives, even if it is enjoyed vicariously through the local football club. Guardiola has improved the existence of tens of thousands, finding joy in the style and trophy lifts. Everyone has embraced the "Catalan Manc," enjoying his love of the city, living in the centre of it, becoming friends with the Gallagher brothers and references to local culture. "People called Mourinho the special one, but he's got nothing on Pep," says Hope. "He clearly loves Manchester, embracing it as his city. That's how we feel about Pep, he's our Pep."Many of those in love with Guardiola will get to sit in the newly expanded North Stand named in his honour, helping secure a record Etihad Stadium attendance of 60,332, a fitting way to go out. It was unveiled on Sunday while a statue will be erected somewhere in the vicinity to immortalise the immortal to ensure that some things are eternal. The Legacy of Pep GuardiolaAll the Guardiola collectibles were on sale, from flags to scarves and plenty in between, while one group in the East Stand stood resplendent in T-shirts spelling out "Gracies Pep" to show their appreciation in his native Catalan. A mural depicting Guardiola now sits resplendent on the side of a house opposite the ground but there is no chance of him being forgotten.Fans will probably be clubbing together to see if they can find the land of the coconuts where Guardiola will be sunning himself over the summer. At the very least, they initiated Guardiola's new life with the palm trees by bouncing beach balls around the stands.Guardiola should have brought his own tissues, with eyes watering when he embraced another departing legend Bernardo Silva after bringing the captain off. Without a handkerchief in sight, Guardiola was forced to use his Pep-branded T-shirt to wipe away the tears. The Portuguese was given a standing ovation and guard of honour from the two teams and it seemed to finally dawn on Guardiola when he embraced the man that has provided immaculate service for nine seasons. Shortly afterwards John Stones got the same combination of standing ovation and guard of honour. "We've got Guardiola," rang out repeatedly as the head coach absorbed it for one final time, weeping. The Blue Moon has reached its highest under Guardiola, and it will rise again at Manchester City but it will never shine as bright. Guardiola finished with: "In the next years, if you see me in the States or Europe or somewhere and you are a Man City fan, come and hug me. I will need it." So will they.

The victory was a relief for fans and players alike, who had witnessed a tumultuous season. De Zerbi's Impact on the Team Roberto De Zerbi, a manager of great promise, has made an immediate impact at Tottenham. With 11 points in seven games, his influence has been stark, especially considering the injury crisis that has plagued the team. His appointment may signal a new era for Spurs, one that could bring a bracing clarity of vision and rejuvenation. The Data Behind the Win Tottenham secured their Premier League survival with a 1-0 win over Everton. Roberto De Zerbi has accumulated 11 points in seven games. The team's injury crisis has been a significant challenge. The Impact on Tottenham's Future The win not only secured Tottenham's Premier League status but also provided a much-needed boost to the team's morale. With De Zerbi at the helm, Spurs may be able to build on this momentum and aim for a European qualifying position next season. The squad will likely undergo reshaping, but the positive vibes around the club could be well-founded.
