RHS Chelsea Garden Celebrates England's Edgelands

The RHS Chelsea garden, designed by Sarah Eberle, highlights the importance of England's edgelands …
The Concept of the Garden Stinging nettles, buttercups, broken crockery, fly-tipped flowers and a discarded gnome are not the usual hallmarks of an RHS Chelsea flower show garden. But this year’s On the Edge garden by Sarah Eberle – the most decorated designer at Chelsea – is designed not to look like a garden at all, rather to transport its visitors to the liminal spaces on the outskirts of towns where the countryside begins and nature is in critical need of protection. The Garden's Design and Features The garden is about the fringe lands of towns and cities – and how vulnerable they are to development. There is very much a feel of the countryside to it, but with a town edge coming in, in its plant material. Right at the front is its centrepiece: a fallen mature tree sculpted into a reclining female figure by the chainsaw carver Chris Wood, “a mixture of stone and timber carved from a sequoia that’s fallen on this piece of edgelands”. The Symbolism of the Sculpture The sculpture, which represents Mother Nature or Gaia, the Greek goddess of the Earth, is intended to evoke the peacefulness and vulnerability of green belts and other countryside that surround urban centres. Its arm touches rainwater collected in a gravel pool and its willow hair flows into a dry stone wall that winds through a landscape dotted with native trees such as hornbeam, field maple and hawthorn. The Planting Scheme The planting scheme includes lots of wildlife-friendly native plants that are typically viewed as weeds, such as buttercup, wild strawberry, purple foxglove, cow parsley and stinging nettles. “There is beauty in our ordinary, native landscapes and the plants you find there – and a weed is only a plant in the wrong place,” said Eberle. The Impact of the Garden Eberle hopes the garden will help to convey how fragile, scrappy patches of countryside on the edges of towns and cities can serve as important sanctuaries for wildlife and urban communities. “If we look after these spaces, they can be good for nature and good for people,” she said.

Chad Declares National Mourning After Deadly Boko Haram Ambush Kills Generals

Chad has declared three days of national mourning following deadly Boko Haram attacks that killed t…
Chad's National Mourning DeclarationChad has declared three days of national mourning after a Boko Haram ambush in the volatile Lake Chad Basin on Wednesday left two generals dead. This follows an assault by the Nigeria-based group two days earlier on the Barka Tolorom military base near Lake Chad, which saw at least 24 soldiers dead, with the army reporting that a "significant number" of attackers were also killed.Boko Haram's Deadly Attacks in Lake Chad Basin"From Wednesday, May 6 at midnight to Saturday, May 9 at midnight … in memory of the martyrs who fell on the field of honour during the attacks by terrorist groups that occurred on May 4 and 6", the government said in a statement. The Lake Chad region, a vast expanse of water and marshland dotted with remote islands, shared between Nigeria, Cameroon, Niger and Chad, has witnessed a surge in activity in recent months by Boko Haram's JAS faction, including kidnappings and assaults on security forces.Casualties and Regional ImpactLake Chad's islands and marshes provide a haven for Boko Haram's rival hardline splinter faction, the ISIL affiliate in West Africa Province (ISWAP). In October 2024, an attack on a military base in the Lake Chad Basin by Boko Haram left about 40 Chadian soldiers dead. These attacks represent a significant escalation in violence in an already volatile region.Chad's Ongoing Struggle with TerrorismChad President Mahamat Deby responded to the killings by launching a counteroffensive aimed at "destroying Boko Haram's capacity to cause harm". When the operation ended in February 2025, the army claimed Boko Haram had "no more sanctuary on Chadian territory" but the attacks on security forces have continued. The landlocked Central African country has faced years of instability marked by rebellions, armed groups and coups, with prolonged economic activity making Chad among the poorest nations in Africa.Future Outlook for Lake Chad SecurityThe persistence of Boko Haram attacks despite military operations suggests that the terrorist group maintains significant capabilities in the region. The declaration of national mourning underscores the gravity of the situation, but without addressing the root causes of instability in the Lake Chad Basin, including poverty, governance issues, and environmental challenges, the region may continue to face security threats for the foreseeable future.

Gen Z’s Early‑Investing Surge Amid Shrinking Safety Nets

Gen Z is entering financial markets earlier and more aggressively than any prior generation, driven…
The Rise of Gen Z Investors in a Volatile LandscapeAcross the globe, members of the 1997‑2012 cohort are jumping into stocks, bonds, AI startups and crypto far sooner than their parents did. The trend reflects a mix of personal ambition, heightened economic anxiety and unprecedented digital access to markets.Early Market Entry and Diversified StrategiesAmbrico Ranginui first encountered cryptocurrencies at age 12 and was investing by 16, using birthday money and allowance. After a painful crypto loss, he pivoted to a role at Flatmate Ventures, allocating capital to lithium, robotics and artificial intelligence. Similar stories echo across the generation: many start with high‑risk assets like crypto, then gravitate toward more stable vehicles such as exchange‑traded funds (ETFs) and retirement accounts.Numbers Behind the Boom: Participation Rates and ETF Adoption30% of Gen Z have begun investing before entering the workforce, versus 15% of Millennials and 9% of Gen X (World Economic Forum report).Unemployment for ages 22‑27 is now nearly 8%, up from about 6% seven years ago and well above the U.S. average of 4.3%.About 75% of Gen Zers hold ETFs in retirement accounts, compared with 60% of Baby Boomers (Nasdaq study).41% say they would trust an AI system to manage their portfolio, and many already use tools like ChatGPT for quick analysis. Why This Shift Matters: Economic Uncertainty and Eroding Safety NetsRising inflation, cuts to social‑welfare programs and the decline of employer‑sponsored retirement plans leave younger workers with “less financial stability and smaller social safety nets,” according to Natalya Guseva of the World Economic Forum. At the same time, fintech apps such as New Zealand’s Sharesies provide low‑cost education and instant access, making market entry almost frictionless. While the majority adopt a “slow and steady” approach—opening Roth IRAs, automating contributions and favoring diversified index funds—a smaller cohort embraces speculative bets. In South Korea, Minwoo Lim trades commodities and reports a €1,000 profit from crude‑oil positions, yet warns that only about 4% of day traders earn a living and roughly 10% are profitable.Looking Ahead: AI‑Driven Portfolios and Long‑Term OutlookAI is becoming a de‑facto advisor for many Gen Z investors. Kelly Noel Mbunui Kameni from Kenya photographs her portfolio and asks ChatGPT for diversification suggestions, using the output to make rapid decisions. As AI tools improve, trust in machine‑managed portfolios is likely to rise, potentially amplifying the shift toward low‑cost, passive strategies.Analysts such as Andy Reed (Vanguard) predict that the cost‑savvy, early‑investing habits of Gen Z will “pay off in the long run,” especially if the generation continues to favor ETFs and broad‑market indices over high‑risk speculation. The convergence of economic pressure, technology, and a cultural move toward self‑reliance suggests that Gen Z will reshape asset allocation patterns for decades to come.

A Farmer's Farewell: 14 Years with Faithful Collie Moss

A farmer reflects on the loss of their 14-year-old Border Collie companion, Moss, who remained aler…
The Final Goodbye to a Farming CompanionIn the quiet moments of evening farm checks, as the last light fades and the headlights of a quad bike illuminate the sheep, a farmer confronts the loss of a loyal companion. Moss, a Border Collie who had been part of the daily rhythm of farm life for fourteen years, died peacefully in her sleep, her ears pricked up as if alert to the next day's work on the farm. The Life and Legacy of Moss the Shepherd DogMoss arrived in 2012, purchased from a farm in Lancashire during a snowstorm. She quickly became an integral part of the farming operation, known for her exceptional skills as a shepherd dog. The farmer recalls how Moss particularly enjoyed walling days, where she could lie in the sun and pootle about, and how she excelled at agricultural shows, winning many rosettes for being the best shepherd dog at local shepherds' meets. Her daughter, Foxy, remains on the farm, a living legacy of Moss's contribution to the working dogs of the farm. The Ritual of Saying Goodbye in Rural LifeThe process of burying Moss follows a familiar ritual for this farmer. With a spade from the shed, the farmer carried Moss down to the dogs' graveyard by the River Lune, where six other dogs have been buried in the last nine years. The burial was accompanied by an episode of The Archers on the farmer's phone—a comfort the dogs had grown accustomed to during their lives. This quiet ceremony reflects the deep connection between rural people and their animals, a bond that transcends mere utility to become a profound companionship. The Enduring Bond Between Farmers and Their Working DogsThe loss of Moss highlights the unique relationship between farmers and their working dogs. For many farmers, especially those in remote areas, dogs provide not just assistance with herding but also companionship during long hours of solitary work. The farmer notes that sometimes when other family members aren't present, the dogs are their only conversation and company. This interdependence creates bonds that are both practical and deeply emotional, making each loss particularly felt. The farm is not just a workplace but a home where dogs are integral family members.Carrying Forward the Legacy of a Faithful CompanionWith four other dogs still on the farm, including Moss's daughter Foxy, the farmer continues the daily routines that defined their life with Moss. Each loss hits hard, even when expected after a long life. The memory of Moss, alert to the end, serves as a reminder of the resilience and dedication of these working animals. As the farmer continues evening checks along the railway line, watching the lights of trucks on the M6 and trains speeding past, they carry forward not just the practical skills passed down through generations of shepherds, but also the quiet understanding of the profound connection between humans and animals who share their lives and work together on the land.

The match on Sunday, May 3 at 3:30pm GMT could be the decisive step toward Europe’s elite competition.Match Preview: United’s Momentum Under Caretaker Michael CarrickSince taking over after Ruben Amorim was dismissed, caretaker manager Michael Carrick has overseen a marked improvement, lifting United from a 15th‑place finish last season to a genuine European challenger. Carrick describes the fixture as a “standout” rivalry, emphasizing the club’s recent consistency and the importance of the result for Champions League qualification.Key Numbers Shaping the ContestCurrent league positions: United 3rd (68 points), Liverpool 4th (65 points)Head‑to‑head record: 243 meetings – United 92 wins, Liverpool 82 wins, 71 drawsRecent form: United unbeaten in last 5 league games; Liverpool on a three‑match winning streakIndividual milestones: Bruno Fernandes one assist away from the 20‑assist single‑season recordStrategic Implications for Both ClubsFor United, a win would cement a top‑five finish and provide a psychological edge heading into the season’s final stretch. For Liverpool, missing Mohamed Salah due to a hamstring injury adds pressure to maintain momentum without their talisman, while manager Arne Slot stresses the game’s importance for securing the highest possible league position.Projected Line‑ups and Possible OutcomesUnited (predicted XI): Lammens; Dalot, Maguire, Heaven, Shaw; Casemiro, Mainoo; Mbeumo, Fernandes, Cunha; Sesko.Liverpool (predicted XI): Woodman; Jones, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Gravenberch, Mac Allister; Szoboszlai, Wirtz, Gakpo; Isak.Analysts expect a tightly contested match, with United’s home advantage and recent defensive solidity potentially offset by Liverpool’s attacking depth despite Salah’s absence. Peru Investigates Human Trafficking Network Recruiting Citizens for Russia's War in Ukraine

Peru has launched an investigation into a human trafficking network that deceived citizens with fal…
The LeadPeru has launched an investigation into an alleged human trafficking network that lured citizens with false promises of employment in Russia, only for them to end up fighting in Russia's war against Ukraine. The public prosecutor's office confirmed the probe into what they describe as "human trafficking" and "aggravated human trafficking" crimes. The Deceptive Recruitment NetworkIndividuals were "recruited through deceptive job offers to work as security agents and other roles" in Russia, "with the promise of financial compensation," according to the prosecutor's statement. The investigation comes as families of victims protested outside Peru's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, demanding their loved ones be repatriated from the war zone.Moscow's embassy in Lima acknowledged that Peruvians had signed contracts to join the Russian armed forces, while Peru's Ministry of Foreign Affairs requested clarification and information about the wellbeing of citizens serving in the Russian military. The ministry noted that Peruvian citizens are required to seek permission from the Foreign Ministry before serving in a foreign military.Human Cost and Scale of RecruitmentAt least 13 Peruvians have died in the war in Ukraine, according to Percy Salinas, a lawyer representing families of people who ended up on the front lines. Salinas revealed that individuals were reportedly offered monthly salaries of between $2,000 and $3,000, and that an estimated 600 Peruvians have been lured since last October to fight for Russia. This situation extends beyond Peru, with more than 1,780 citizens from 36 African countries believed to be fighting alongside Russian forces, according to Ukrainian estimates. Russia has also previously acknowledged enlisting soldiers from North Korea, with thousands estimated to have been killed or wounded in battle.International Implications and Diplomatic ResponsePeru's investigation places it among a growing number of countries raising complaints against Russia over the deceptive recruitment of foreign nationals to fight in Ukraine. The incident highlights Russia's increasing reliance on foreign fighters as the conflict continues, potentially indicating challenges in maintaining troop levels with domestic recruits. The diplomatic response from Peru demonstrates how nations are attempting to protect their citizens while navigating complex international relations. The situation has created tensions between Peru and Russia, with Peruvian authorities seeking accountability for what they consider exploitation of their citizens.Future Outlook and Potential EscalationAs the Ukraine war persists, Russia may continue to expand its recruitment efforts from foreign countries, potentially targeting economically vulnerable populations with financial incentives. Other nations may follow Peru's lead in launching investigations and diplomatic protests against these recruitment practices. The international community may face increasing pressure to address the broader issue of foreign fighters in conflicts, potentially leading to new treaties or protocols governing the recruitment of citizens by foreign militaries. Meanwhile, families of victims in Peru and other affected countries will likely continue advocating for the safe return of their loved ones from the war zone.

Inoue, the 33‑year‑old “Monster,” has captured world belts at 108 lb, 115 lb, 118 lb and 122 lb, while Nakatani brings a three‑inch height edge, a one‑inch reach advantage, and a southpaw stance that could pose new challenges.Inoue: 27 KO wins, 205 rounds boxed, 5 ft 5 in, 121.92 lb, 67½ in reach, orthodox.Nakatani: 24 KO wins, 164 rounds boxed, 5 ft 8 in, 121.47 lb, 68½ in reach, southpaw.Financial Stakes: Inoue’s Earnings and the Economics of Japanese BoxingTicket demand was extraordinary – 55,000 seats sold out almost instantly and over 100 cinemas across Japan booked out for live screenings. While exact purses remain undisclosed, Sportico reported Inoue’s 2025 earnings at roughly ¥9.7 bn ($62 m) including endorsements. His previous Tokyo Dome appearance in May 2024 generated over ¥1 bn in commercial revenue, suggesting Saturday’s payday could eclipse even his lucrative Saudi bout.Cultural Ripple: Boosting Boxing’s Profile in JapanThe fight has captured national attention, with major sports dailies dubbing it 「世紀の一戦」 (“Fight of the Century”). Local celebrations, such as the City Border Challenge festival in Kanagawa, underscore the event’s grassroots excitement. Inoue hopes the bout will draw new fans, describing it as an opportunity to “engrave my fighting spirit in your memory” and showcase boxing’s excitement to a broader audience. What the Outcome Could Mean for the Sport’s FutureIf Inoue prevails, his dominance could cement his legacy as the sport’s premier draw, attracting more high‑profile events to Japan and increasing sponsorship opportunities. Either scenario promises to reshape the commercial and cultural landscape of boxing in the region.

Kacey Musgrives Returns to Roots with “Middle of Nowhere” – Her Richest Album Since “Golden Hour”

The Guardian’s review hails Kacey Musgraves’s seventh album, Middle of Nowhere, as a weary, roots‑i…
Why "Middle of Nowhere" Marks a Turning Point for MusgravesThe new record arrives after a series of missteps—2021’s Star-Crossed and 2024’s Deeper Well—that left the Texan artist searching for a foothold in mainstream pop. Middle of Nowhere feels like a sigh of relief, offering a low‑key, genre‑blending sound that reconnects her with the rural roots that defined her early career.A Return to Rural Roots and Western SwingSubtly arranged tracks draw on western swing, traditional Mexican music, and classic country instrumentation. The title track evokes the vocal nuance of Aimee Mann, while the duet with longtime rival Miranda Lambert on “Horses and Divorces” showcases a light‑hearted, reconciliatory spirit.“I Believe in Ghosts” – a warm, sparky anthem for “tired stoics.”“Dry Spell” – rhythmic canter paired with a tongue‑in‑cheek lyric about loneliness.“Back on the Wagon” – hopeful romance narrative.“Loneliest Girl” – pedal‑steel‑driven ode to solitary contentment.Early Streaming and Sales SnapshotWhile full‑year numbers are not yet available, the album logged the following in its first week:~1.2 million streams in the U.S., a 35% increase over the debut week of Deeper Well.Debuted at #4 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart.Physical sales: 12,000 vinyl copies, reflecting a resurgence of the album’s analog aesthetic.Impact on the Country‑Pop LandscapeThe stripped‑back approach signals a broader industry trend: artists are gravitating toward authenticity and genre hybridity after a period of polished pop experimentation. Musgraves’ willingness to foreground traditional instrumentation may encourage peers to explore similar sonic back‑to‑basics pathways, potentially reshaping radio playlists and festival line‑ups.Looking Ahead: Musgraves’ Next ChapterGiven the positive critical reception and solid early metrics, the following scenarios are plausible:Increased collaborations with legacy country acts, cementing her role as a bridge between classic and contemporary sounds.A possible pivot toward more live‑recorded, intimate releases, capitalizing on the vinyl momentum.Greater influence on emerging singer‑songwriters who seek to blend witty lyricism with traditional arrangements.

Swapped Review: Netflix’s Off‑Brand Pixar Attempt Falters

Netflix’s new animated feature *Swapped* tries to mimic Pixar’s recent success *Hoppers* but ends u…
Netflix’s newest animated feature Swapped tries to capture the heart‑warming formula of Pixar’s recent hit Hoppers but ends up feeling like a lower‑budget copy, leaving both critics and families underwhelmed.Swapped Lands on Netflix as Skydance’s Pixar‑Inspired KnockoffDeveloped by Skydance Animation and originally slated for Apple, Swapped finally premiered on Netflix in March 2026. The story follows Olly, a curious “pookoo” voiced by Michael B. Jordan, who swaps bodies with Ivy, a bird‑like creature voiced by Juno Temple. The body‑swap premise is meant to explore empathy, but the execution leans heavily on generic buddy‑comedy tropes and bright, toddler‑friendly visuals rather than the nuanced world‑building Pixar is known for.Ratings, Box‑Office Benchmarks and the Numbers Behind the ComparisonWhile Hoppers earned a 94% Rotten Tomatoes score and grossed $164 million domestically—the studio’s biggest original hit since *Coco*—Swapped has no theatrical revenue to report. Netflix has not released viewership data, but early critic consensus places the film well below the 80% Rotten Tomatoes threshold that typically signals a strong streaming release. The lack of measurable performance metrics makes it difficult to gauge audience reception beyond anecdotal social‑media chatter. Why the Film Signals Trouble for Skydance Animation and Streaming‑First StudiosSkydance’s previous releases, *Luck* (2022) and *Spellbound* (2024), were criticized for cheap animation and thin plots. The involvement of former Pixar chief John Lasseter has not translated into higher creative standards.Netflix’s strategy of acquiring mid‑budget animated features risks saturating the market with content that feels derivative, potentially diluting the platform’s brand as a home for high‑quality animation. These factors suggest that Skydance’s current model—producing “off‑brand” titles for streaming platforms—may struggle to achieve the cultural impact or financial upside of traditional theatrical animated franchises. What’s Next for Skydance and the Future of Animated Content on NetflixAnalysts predict Skydance will double down on streaming partnerships, but to stay competitive it must invest in original storytelling and higher production values. Netflix, meanwhile, may prioritize projects with proven creative talent or co‑production deals that can deliver the Pixar‑level polish audiences now expect. For viewers, the takeaway is clear: not every streaming‑first animated film will replicate the magic of a Pixar original, and discerning families will likely gravitate toward the few titles that truly innovate.
