Corey Feldman Feels Snubbed by Rob Reiner's Oscars Tribute

Corey Feldman expresses disappointment at being left out of the Oscars tribute to Rob Reiner, compa…
Actor Corey Feldman, known for his role in Stand By Me, has spoken out about being omitted from the Oscars tribute to Rob Reiner earlier this month. Reiner, along with his wife Michele, was remembered during the Academy Awards' in memoriam section. Feldman expressed his feelings of being snubbed, likening it to 'a family reunion I wasn’t invited to.' He mentioned that his co-stars from Stand By Me, Jerry O'Connell and Wil Wheaton, were present at the tribute. “I think Jerry and Wil did what had to be done,” Feldman said. “It was a fleeting moment, so I don’t feel like I missed much at all. Although they did a wonderful job, I would’ve liked to have heard from Wil and Jerry and a few other people up there.” Feldman also noted that plans for events to mark the 40th anniversary of Stand By Me have been scaled down following Reiner's death. “We all would’ve loved to be able to say goodbye in our own ways. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen,” he said. “The best way we can say goodbye is honouring him and his work … and hopefully going out there to celebrate him one last time on a big screen where it deserves to be seen.” The Reiners were found dead at their home on December 14. Their son, Nick Reiner, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder.

Alim Beisembayev Shines with Intimacy and Conviction in Romantic Piano Recital

Kazakh-born pianist Alim Beisembayev delivers a captivating recital of Romantic-era masterpieces, s…
Alim Beisembayev, the Kazakh-born winner of the 2021 Leeds International Piano Competition, presented a compelling piano recital that traversed the Romantic era, from Schubert to Liszt. His performance was marked by intimacy and conviction, bringing to life the passionate surge of Romanticism over three decades.Beisembayev's approach to Schubert's Moments Musicaux, D780 was characterized by calmness and understatement, effectively highlighting the vast contrast with the Liszt that followed. He skillfully utilized the fine acoustic of the Dora Stoutzker hall to create an intimate atmosphere, where Schubert's characteristic slipping between major and minor modes was quietly evocative. In his rendition of Chopin's Fantaisie, Op49, Beisembayev demonstrated a strong affinity with the composer, shaping long arching melodies and capturing their particular melancholy. His keyboard manner was both composed and contained, yet fired volleys of notes with fierce conviction. This approach seemed to embody Schumann's observation that Chopin's works were 'cannon buried in flowers.'The program's coherence was further underscored by the key of F minor, which also pointed to the interval of a diminished 5th, perceived as the Diabolus in Musica in Liszt's Sonata in B minor. Beisembayev's precise management of Liszt's transitions from apocalyptic turmoil to serene melody spinning, punctuated by moments of silence, showcased his technical assurance and deeper interpretative insights. The recital concluded with a Debussy encore that seamlessly transitioned into the 20th century, offering liquid balm beautifully delivered.

Understanding the Houthis: Yemen's Powerful Militant Group

The Houthis are a militant group that emerged from a years-long civil war in Yemen as the country’s most powerful political force. Their strategic location at the entrance of the Red Sea allows them to disrupt international trade. The group, which has an estimated 20,000 fighters, represents the Zaidi branch of Shia Islam. The Houthis first began gaining mass support around the turn of the century from Shia Yemenis who were fed up with corruption and authoritarian leaders. In 2014, the Houthis captured the Yemeni capital, Sana’a, and a year later overthrew the western-backed president, Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi. Hadi was forced to flee, but his allies in Saudi Arabia and the UAE launched a military campaign, also backed by the west, to drive out the Houthis. The ensuing civil war led to an estimated 377,000 deaths and displaced 4 million people by the end of 2021. The UN brokered a 2022 truce between the warring sides in Yemen that has largely held.As part of Iran’s “axis of resistance”, the Houthis began targeting international shipping in the Red Sea after the 7 October 2023 attack on Israel by Hamas, which triggered the Israeli military campaign in Gaza. The Houthis’ campaign in the Red Sea – a major thoroughfare for world trade – brought chaos to global supply chains. The Houthis ceased their attacks after a US-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in October 2025.While the US says Iran has armed, funded, and trained the Houthis, the group denies being an Iranian proxy but says they share a political affinity. On 28 March, the Houthis fired missiles at Israel, vowing to continue military operations until Israel “ceases its attacks and aggression”.

Super League marked a major milestone on Sunday, celebrating three decades since its inception in 1996. The occasion was commemorated with a thrilling match between Leeds Rhinos and Warrington Wolves at Headingley, one of the competition's most iconic venues. Leeds emerged victorious, edging out Warrington 26-22 in a game that could be a contender for the standout match of 2026.The Super League has consistently delivered entertainment on the field over the years, despite facing various challenges, including missed opportunities and boardroom frustrations. The competition has struggled with expansion, with several projects, such as Paris Saint-Germain and Toronto Wolfpack, failing to gain long-term traction. The Leeds Rhinos are a prime example of a club that has successfully evolved since 1996. From financial difficulties and a struggling team to becoming one of the heavyweights of the sport, Leeds has redeveloped its famous Headingley home into one of the game's best venues, attracting the biggest attendances in the competition. As Super League looks to the future, it faces the challenge of balancing the strength of its biggest clubs while finding ways to reach a wider mainstream audience. With an offer of investment from Australia's National Rugby League likely to arrive soon, the league has much to ponder about its future direction and how to capitalize on its English stars like Jake Connor, Jake Thewlis, and George Williams.

Artists 'Marry' River in Symbolic Pledge to Protect Waterway

In a unique display of environmental activism, a group of artists from Wiveliscombe, known as artistsformallyknownasWiveyXR, recently gathered at Hurstone nature reserve in Exmoor national park to symbolically 'marry' the River Tone. The event, held on World Water Day (March 22), was a creative response to the call to action by Extinction Rebellion. The group, dressed in elaborate costumes and papier-mache masks, including Frog, Badger, and Barn Owl, made their way to the river's edge, accompanied by music and chanting. The ritual was inspired by a similar event in Bristol, where a young activist Megan 'married' her local river, the Avon, in 2023. The River Tone, located just seven miles from its source, was described as 'sparkling and clear' during the ceremony, a stark contrast to the polluted state of many rivers in England. According to the Rivers Trust, 0% of the 3,553 river stretches in England assessed were in good overall status. The event aimed to raise awareness about the importance of protecting waterways and the alarming state of river health in the country. During the ceremony, a participant, Eileen, dressed as a salmon, paddled downstream on her hands and knees, committing to 'love and honour' the River Tone and protect it 'in sickness and in health'. The event was a powerful expression of the community's commitment to environmental activism and the preservation of natural resources.

Pakistan's Peace Efforts Under Threat as Israeli Strikes and US Troop Buildup Escalate Tensions

Pakistan's efforts to host peace talks between Iran and the US are facing significant challenges du…
Pakistan's attempts to facilitate peace talks between Iran and the US are encountering substantial obstacles. The intensification of Israeli bombing campaigns on civilian targets in Iran and an expanding US military presence in the Gulf region are casting a shadow over these efforts.Pakistan, maintaining relative neutrality with good relations with both Iran and the US, had hoped to provide a venue for negotiations. However, the conflict is widening, trust is scarce, and the stated positions of Tehran and Washington are far apart. Pakistani officials believe Israel's actions pose a significant risk to any potential talks, particularly given recent attacks on civilian nuclear sites and steel plants.Iran's core concerns include ensuring an end to the war and preventing future attacks by the US and Israel. Former Pakistani ambassador to the US, Maleeha Lodhi, expressed skepticism about US President Donald Trump's reliability, citing his unpredictable nature.Despite these challenges, Pakistan continues its diplomatic efforts. The country's prime minister, Shehbaz Sharif, has been in communication with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, and foreign ministers from Turkey, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan are set to hold talks in Islamabad to discuss ending the conflict. The situation remains complex, with US troop buildup suggesting that peace talks may not align with US plans. Iran has expressed distrust towards previous US interlocutors, but there is consideration for US Vice-President JD Vance to represent the US in talks, an idea supported by Iran.

Tiger Woods' Recent Run-Ins with the Law Raise Questions About Golf's Dependence on Him

Tiger Woods' recent arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence has sparked questions about …
Tiger Woods, one of the greatest golfers of all time, has once again found himself in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. His recent arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI) has raised questions about why golf remains so beholden to him, despite his repeated run-ins with the law and declining performance. In 2010, Woods delivered a 14-minute mea culpa on his transgressions, including his extramarital affairs, in front of a hand-picked audience at the PGA Tour. However, 16 years later, it appears that not much has changed. Woods has continued to struggle with his personal life and has had multiple encounters with the law, including a 2021 car crash in Los Angeles and a 2017 incident where he was found asleep at the wheel of his car.Despite his declining performance, Woods remains a central figure in golf. He is being considered to captain the United States Ryder Cup team and is the chairman of a committee tasked with reshaping the PGA Tour's schedule. However, his behavioral pattern raises questions about the validity of his role in the sport.Woods' actions have consequences not only for himself but also for others. His reckless driving puts not only his own life at risk but also the lives of others on the road. It is unacceptable that an athlete of his standing continues to engage in such behavior and expects to be treated differently than others. The golf community must reassess its relationship with Woods and consider whether his actions align with the values of the sport. While it is possible to feel sympathy for Woods' plight, it is also important to acknowledge that there are consequences for one's actions. The sport must prioritize accountability and responsibility over its dependence on a single individual, no matter how great they may be.

Tan Dun's Choral Concerto and Beethoven's Ninth: A Night of Contrasts

The London Philharmonic Orchestra performed Tan Dun's Choral Concerto: Nine and Beethoven's Ninth S…
Chinese-born American composer Tan Dun is renowned for his eclectic and captivating works. His music has been featured in prominent projects, including the score for Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and the official music for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.Tan's Choral Concerto: Nine, commissioned for Beethoven's 250th anniversary, premiered with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and London Philharmonic Choir. The concerto features a vast array of percussion and choral techniques, including dramatic inhalations and hints of Mongolian throat singing. In contrast, the performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony was marked by fast tempos and crisp rhythms but lacked a sense of large-scale direction and magic. The 'chaos' chord in the finale was overpowered by loud brass, and despite a well-matched vocal quartet, the performance felt workaday.

Unlocking the Science of Luck: How Behavioural Neuroscience Can Change Your Life

Discover how behavioural neuroscience reveals that luck is not just chance, but a set of identifiab…
The concept of luck has long been shrouded in mystery, often attributed to chance or fate. However, behavioural neuroscience has made significant strides in uncovering the underlying mechanisms that govern luck. According to research, luck is not just a roll of the dice, but rather a complex interplay of brain chemistry and behaviour that can be influenced and cultivated. The neuroscience behind luck reveals that it operates through identifiable patterns of brain chemistry and behaviour. Studies have shown that the consistently lucky are not blessed by fate, but rather, they possess a unique set of habits and characteristics that enable them to capitalize on opportunities and navigate challenges more effectively. Brain imaging techniques have even identified specific regions of the brain that are activated when individuals perceive themselves as lucky, shifting their perception from threat-detection mode to opportunity-recognition mode.Serotonin production, regulated by morning sunlight, tryptophan-rich foods, and a regular sleep-wake cycle, plays a critical role in determining one's luck. Individuals who prioritize these factors are more likely to experience a boost in serotonin levels, which in turn, enhances their mood, social confidence, and resilience. Conversely, those who lead erratic lifestyles and neglect these factors may find themselves chronically sleep-deprived and less likely to encounter fortunate events.Lucky individuals also tend to possess a clear awareness of their interests and passions, which guides their decision-making and behaviour. By following their 'fascination compass', they are more likely to stumble upon opportunities and experiences that align with their values and goals. Novelty-seeking and a willingness to take calculated risks also characterize lucky individuals, as they understand that each small departure from routine can be a ticket to new experiences and encounters.Generosity and a willingness to help others without expectation of return are also key characteristics of lucky individuals. Brain imaging studies have shown that acts of genuine generosity activate the brain's deepest reward centre, releasing feel-good chemicals that reinforce positive behaviours and build social capital. By investing in others and cultivating meaningful relationships, lucky individuals create a network of opportunities and support that can help them navigate life's challenges. In conclusion, luck is not just a matter of chance, but rather a complex interplay of brain chemistry, behaviour, and habit. By understanding the underlying mechanisms that govern luck and incorporating these insights into daily life, individuals can increase their chances of experiencing fortunate events and leading a more fulfilling life.
