The Revival of Sugar Bob Mould has never seemed to have much interest in looking back. The bridges to a Hüsker Dü reunion were burned long before drummer and songwriter Grant Hart died in 2017; the notion that Mould might revive Sugar, the band who scored three unlikely UK Top 10 albums of ferocious alt-rock in the mid-90s, seemed ridiculous. But here we are: after three New York shows, Mould, David Barbe and Malcolm Travis are touring the UK and Ireland. The Performance Some things have changed: the seething sea of moshers at 90s shows is now a placid lake of the nodding middle-aged. Travis, 73, seems to drum with the minimum amount of movement possible, wisely given the searing heat inside the Forum. Others haven’t: JC Auto, which closes the main set, remains brutal and churning, thrillingly intense. Mould still stomps in circles around the stage like a man furiously searching for his lost remote control. The Music Mould, arguably, is the man who brought melody to American hardcore punk, and Sugar continued his desire for big tunes and searing guitars. When he plays alone, it can be hard sometimes to pick out the melodies behind the trebly sheets of guitar, but the ballast of the rhythm section holds the tunes in place, and the pop smarts of If I Can’t Change Your Mind and Gee Angel burst out of the PA. The Vocal Dynamics The songs sung by Barbe don’t fare quite so well – his voice is smooth and high and gets a little lost in the mix. You can hear he’s singing during Company Book, but it’s more a texture than a selection of words, floating atop the guitars. That same texture, though, adds depth to his harmonies, giving Sugar a warmth that not all their contemporaries could manage. The Future There’s no time for messing around, just a furious charge through 23 songs in 90 minutes, including two recorded for the reunion – Long Live Love and House of Dead Memories – suggesting that Sugar might stick around to do more than tour gen X nostalgia. "Honestly, I was so grateful to be shooting that stuff and not fucking 16-page dialogue scenes, where you're emoting and it's so intense," says Bell. "On days when my character had to have sex with random people, I'd think: 'Thank God!' Frankly, it came as a welcome reprieve."The Creative PartnershipRichard Gadd's first TV show since the Emmy-gobbling global Netflix hit Baby Reindeer, Half Man chronicles the combustible, codependent relationship between two "brothers from another lover". Niall (Bell) is bookish, bullied and closeted. Ruben (Gadd) is the swaggeringly violent ex-con son of his mother's girlfriend. The six-part drama – which reaches its devastating finale next week – traces the inseparable duo's toxic relationship across three decades.The role of Niall was written specifically for Bell. "I didn't realise that when I initially read the scripts," says Bell. "But later, when I met Richard in Los Angeles to discuss it, he said he wrote it with me in mind. I was incredibly flattered … It's a sensory experience reading Richard's material. He truly takes you to those places in your own life. It probes experiences you've kept hidden away somewhere and chosen to forget."Character ComplexityHe was drawn to his Half Man character's complexity. "I thought: 'Woah, this man is on such a destructive downward spiral …' He's got everything he wanted in life but still can't accept who he is. Niall is living as several different people and he's not comfortable with any of them."Bell really empathised with gentle Niall being drawn to such an aggressive alpha male. "Ruben is this disaster of a man. A bull in a china shop, destroying everything and everyone in his wake. Why doesn't Niall step away? Partly self-preservation. Niall feels vulnerable whereas Ruben is intimidatingly powerful. He can be Niall's protector. People fear him. Because of that, Niall latches on to him almost parasitically. Ruben becomes his life support system. I understood that 100%."I grew up in an all-female household and did ballet, so I used to attach myself to tough, troubled guys too. Not my kind of crowd at all but I'd rather have them on my team than not."Themes of Toxic MasculinityNiall struggles with his sexuality to the extent that he undergoes conversion therapy. As a straight man, Bell felt an acute sense of responsibility portraying that. "It's the centre of the character," he says. "The basis of all his issues. I took that very seriously. Niall's self-hate goes beyond shame or societal pressure. Somehow, his own sexuality doesn't sit right within his worldview. That, to me, is beyond sad. 'Be yourself' is the simplest advice yet at times, the hardest to adhere to." As a result of his turmoil, Niall goes to some dark places sexually. "Because of his repression, everything is guarded and hidden. That becomes the excitement. It's an addiction. He gets a kick from dangerous sex."With its portrayal of male rage and damaged antiheroes, Half Man taps into debates about toxic masculinity. Does Bell believe his gender is in crisis? "Look at who are the majority transgressors in this world," he says. "It's men, on all fronts – not just misogyny but conflict, crime, everything. It's important to shine a light on that. "It's a brutal, beastly thing that Richard has created," says Bell. "I'd be lying if I said it was easy or fun to make." A state of emergency was declared at public hospitals in Quetta, with doctors and medical staff ordered to remain on duty. Footage shared online showed charred vehicles and train carriages lying on their sides, with thick plumes of black smoke rising into the sky.Pakistan's Prime Minister Sharif condemned the attack in a post on X, stating: "Such cowardly acts of terrorism cannot weaken the resolve of the people of Pakistan. The BLA often targets infrastructure and security forces but has also struck in other areas, including Karachi.The BLA has deployed women suicide bombers and was designated a "foreign terrorist organisation" by the United States in August 2025. The group was also at the center of tit-for-tat strikes in 2024 between Iran and Pakistan, bringing the neighbors to the brink of war.The Baloch Cause: Resources and MarginalizationHome to about 15 million of Pakistan's roughly 240 million people, Balochistan is the country's poorest region despite its wealth of natural resources, including coal, gold, copper, and gas. These resources generate significant revenue for the federal government – unfairly, according to the BLA, which wants Balochistan's natural wealth to belong to its people.The province is home to one of Pakistan's major deep-sea ports at Gwadar, a crucial trade corridor for China's $65 billion investment in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a wing of President Xi Jinping's Belt and Road initiative. It also contains key mining projects, including Reko Diq, believed to be one of the world's largest gold and copper mines.Regional Stability and International Investment at RiskThe attack comes as Pakistan attempts to strengthen economic and security cooperation with China – something the BLA strongly opposes. The movement poses a challenge to Pakistan's efforts to retain Chinese and American investment, potentially revealing deeper instability in the region."The persistence of insurgency has had implications for Pakistan's wider political system," explained Yunas Samad, an emeritus professor of South Asian Studies. "Security concerns in Balochistan have increasingly shaped governance and political discourse, strengthening the role of the military and security establishment in national affairs and undermining the democratisation process."Internationally, the issue matters because Pakistan remains a nuclear-armed state of enormous strategic importance. Any significant escalation in internal instability in a country with nuclear capabilities inevitably attracts international concern.Rare-Earth Minerals and Geopolitical CompetitionAnother major issue is that geological assessments suggest Balochistan contains 12 of the 17 rare-earth minerals on the periodic table. Rare earths are critical minerals used to manufacture a vast array of modern items, including batteries, military hardware, smartphones, and semiconductors.Since the start of his second term, US President Donald Trump has pushed plans to diversify Washington's stockpile of critical minerals to reduce reliance on China, which currently dominates the supply and processing of the world's rare-earth minerals. In December 2025, the US announced a $1.25 billion investment in critical minerals mining at Reko Diq to drive "economic growth in Balochistan."Future Outlook for Balochistan's ConflictWhether the current surge in attacks constitutes an entirely "new phase" of the conflict remains unclear. However, it does appear to indicate a degree of resurgence in militant capability and confidence among sections of the Baloch insurgency."The fact that this latest incident nevertheless occurred may suggest that militant groups retain a significant operational capability despite security efforts," noted Samad. "Whether this constitutes an entirely 'new phase' is perhaps too strong a conclusion at present. However, it does appear to indicate a degree of resurgence in militant capability and confidence among sections of the Baloch insurgency."The Baloch separatist movement remains one of the major unresolved questions over Pakistan's statehood, serving as a constant reminder of the challenges the Pakistani state faces in maintaining unity and stability in the region.

The SpaceX IPO: A Historic Listing on Nasdaq Tech billionaire Elon Musk’s SpaceX is preparing to list its shares on the US-based Nasdaq in what will be the most hotly anticipated initial public offering (IPO) in years. What is SpaceX? Founded in 2002 by Musk, now the world’s richest man, SpaceX is best known for designing and launching rockets, spacecraft and reusable launch vehicles. Since 2006, the company has partnered with NASA to deliver cargo and crew to the International Space Station (ISS). The Texas-based company has also launched rockets, satellites and spacecraft for various private companies. As well as its aerospace business, SpaceX provides internet services and artificial intelligence platforms through its dedicated divisions, Starlink and xAI. The Significance of the SpaceX IPO The IPO will be listed under “SPCX” on the Nasdaq, which is home to such corporate behemoths as Nvidia, Apple and Microsoft. While SpaceX has not officially confirmed the date of its public debut, multiple media reports have said it is planning to do so as early as June. Following the IPO, members of the public will be able to buy and sell SpaceX shares on the stock exchange. Why is the SpaceX IPO such a Big Deal? It is widely expected to be the largest IPO in history, and is likely to make Musk the world’s first trillionaire. The firm is aiming to raise upwards of $80bn for a market valuation of between $1.75 trillion and $2 trillion, according to media reports. Twenty-three financial institutions, including Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Citigroup, JP Morgan and BofA Securities, are underwriting the deal. Financial Performance and Future Outlook SpaceX achieved revenue of $18.6bn in 2025, up from $14bn the previous year, but suffered a net loss of $4.9bn. In the first quarter of this year, the company reported $4.7bn in revenue but made a net loss of $4.3bn. Analysts have linked some of the losses to SpaceX’s decision to acquire xAI in 2025.

Brent crude, the primary benchmark for global oil prices, fell more than 5 percent on Sunday as US President Donald Trump gave mixed signals on the prospects for a permanent end to the conflict. Current Oil Price Trends Brent futures for July stood at $97.94 a barrel as of 04:00 GMT, down about 9 percent from a month ago but still up by more than a third compared with before the start of the war. Market Reaction to Trump's Statements Trump said in a social media post on Sunday that negotiations with Tehran were proceeding in an 'orderly and constructive manner', but he had instructed officials 'not to rush into a deal'. 'Both sides must take their time and get it right. There can be no mistakes!' Trump wrote on Truth Social. The Effect of the Strait of Hormuz on Oil Markets Iran has effectively blockaded the strait since the start of the war in late February, disrupting about one-fifth of the global oil trade. 'Fundamentally, there is no change to the underlying picture, where 10-11 million barrels per day of crude oil continue to be shut-in for every day the Strait of Hormuz remains shut,' June Goh, a senior oil market analyst at Sparta in Singapore, told Al Jazeera. Future Market Expectations Goh said markets are likely to remain on edge for some time after any deal is finalised. 'Sparta estimates still about three to six months required to get everything back to status quo, including time to bring production and refineries back online,' Goh said.
