China's Strategic Pivot: How Beijing Could Broker a US-Iran Peace Deal

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi’s visit to Beijing highlights China’s pivotal role in de-es…
The Diplomatic Overlap in BeijingIranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in Beijing on Wednesday, signaling a critical juncture in the US-Iran war. The visit comes as efforts to broker a peace deal accelerate, particularly following the United States president's announcement of a pause on attempts to forcibly open the Strait of Hormuz.Economic Stakes in the Strait of HormuzThe timing of the meeting underscores the immense economic pressure driving the diplomatic push. The disruption to shipping through the strait, which handles roughly one-fifth of the world's oil and gas, has sent shockwaves through the global economy. For China, which relies heavily on Gulf energy flows, the blockade poses a direct threat to its economic stability and trade routes.China’s Delicate Balancing ActThroughout the conflict, China has navigated a complex geopolitical tightrope. While Wang Yi condemned US and Israeli military actions as "illegitimate," Beijing has stopped short of fully endorsing every Iranian move. China has vetoed UN Security Council efforts to condemn Iran and resisted US sanctions on Chinese firms purchasing Iranian oil, all while urging regional stability. The Window for Diplomatic BrokerageAnalysts suggest the coming days are critical for China to leverage its unique position. With a draft UN resolution reportedly revised to secure Russian and Chinese support, Beijing has a rare opportunity to position itself as a global diplomatic broker. A successful intervention would not only stabilize the region but also grant China greater influence among Gulf energy producers and enhance its image as a credible peacemaker.

The Deadliest Assault in Central Mali Dozens of people have been killed in attacks reportedly carried out by al-Qaeda-affiliated fighters in central Mali, the deadliest assault since armed groups launched a widespread coordinated assault late last month. Attack Details and Casualties According to local, security and administrative sources speaking to the AFP news agency on Thursday, attacks on the villages of Korikori and Gomossogou in the Mopti region killed at least 30 people a day earlier. Three sources – including an aid worker, a diplomat and a security source – separately told the news agency Reuters that the assailants had hit two unnamed localities in Mopti, killing at least 50 on Wednesday. The Resurgence of Violence in Mali The latest attacks come a day after armed fighters stormed the Kenieroba Central Prison, a recently built complex about 60km (37 miles) southwest of Bamako, which houses 2,500 prisoners, including at least 72 inmates considered “high value” by the Malian state. The Threat and Military Response During a news conference in Bamako on Wednesday, Malian army commander Djibrilla Maiga said fighters were attempting to reorganise after the April attacks, which killed Defence Minister Sadio Camara and drove Russian troops aligned with Mali’s leaders from the strategic northern town of Kidal. “The threat is still present,” Maiga said, though he added that the military was disrupting their manoeuvres.

One killed in Gaza as Turkish FM talks peace efforts with Hamas official

A Palestinian man was killed and several others injured in an Israeli drone strike in northern Gaza…
The Latest Violence in Gaza A Palestinian man has been killed, and several others injured, after an Israeli drone strike targeted a motorcycle west of the Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza, amid Israel’s continued violations of a “ceasefire” agreed to in October. A medical source confirmed the death on Saturday of Eyad al-Motawwaq to the Anadolu news agency, as well as the injuries of an unspecified number of people. Efforts to Secure Lasting Peace Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza, starting from October 2023, has left 72,736 people dead and more than 172,000 injured. Some 90 percent of Gaza’s civilian infrastructure has also been destroyed, and almost all of Gaza’s two million population is displaced. Since the “ceasefire” in October, at least 850 Palestinians have been killed and 2,433 others injured in Israeli attacks, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. Turkish Diplomatic Efforts Meanwhile on Saturday, Turkiye’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan met with Muhammad Darwish, head of Hamas’s advisory Shura Council, to discuss efforts to secure peace in Gaza, as well as initiatives to deliver humanitarian assistance to the Strip. Sources at the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs told Anadolu that at the meeting in Ankara, Fidan declared Israel’s expanding presence in Gaza and its obstruction of urgently needed humanitarian aid deliveries as “unacceptable”. Fidan also said the ongoing war in the region should not overshadow the Palestinian issue, and he reiterated Turkiye’s opposition to any attempts to force Palestinians to leave Gaza, Anadolu reported.

Wembanyama's Dominant Performance A dominant Victor Wembanyama powered the San Antonio Spurs to a 115-108 win over Minnesota and a 2-1 lead in their NBA playoff series. The 7-foot-4 prodigy, playing his first NBA postseason, finished the night in Minneapolis with 39 points overall, plus 15 rebounds and five blocks. The Game Details Wembanyama took a tight, tense and physical game out of the Timberwolves' grasp with a stunning fourth-quarter offensive, scoring 16 points. “I’m built for this. I love this more than anything else,” said Wembanyama. He added: “We got the talent. We got the depth. We don’t got the experience, but we don’t care … We can go to the very top if we play like tonight consistently.” The Impact Analysis The Timberwolves started dismally, missing their first 12 field goal attempts. Wembanyama shone defensively, with two big early blocks setting the tone, and forcing Minnesota to score from outside the paint. Knicks Near Eastern Conference Finals Jalen Brunson starred again as the in-form Knicks beat the Philadelphia 76ers 108-94 to move within one win of the NBA Eastern Conference finals. No team has ever come back from 3-0 down in a seven-game NBA series.

France's Strategic Pivot: Deploying the Charles de Gaulle to Secure the Strait of Hormuz

France is taking a decisive step to stabilize the volatile waters of the Strait of Hormuz. The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle is en route to the Red Sea, signaling a commitment to restoring freedom of navigation amidst the ongoing conflict between the US and Iran. The Deployment of the Charles de GaulleThe French Ministry of Armed Forces confirmed the carrier's movement south of the Suez Canal. This deployment is not merely a show of force but a calculated diplomatic maneuver led by Emmanuel Macron and Keir Starmer. The mission is explicitly defensive and intended to operate only after the cessation of hostilities, aiming to restore "confidence among shipowners and insurers" in the region.Economic Stakes in the Strait of HormuzThe strategic importance of this waterway cannot be overstated. Prior to the war, roughly 20% of the world’s traded oil transited through the Strait of Hormuz. The current blockade has severely disrupted global energy markets, making the restoration of shipping lanes a priority for international stability and economic recovery.A "Win-Win" Diplomatic FrameworkFrance is attempting to bridge the gap between the US and Iran with a unique proposal. The French presidency suggests a reciprocal agreement: Iran gains safe passage for its ships, while the US lifts its blockade, all in exchange for Iran committing to negotiations on nuclear materials and ballistic missiles. This framework aims to incentivize both parties to de-escalate.The Path to a Post-War SettlementWith reports suggesting the US and Iran are close to a one-page memorandum to end the conflict, the arrival of the Charles de Gaulle could serve as a stabilizing force. If the proposed deal—where Iran halts enrichment for 12 years and the US releases frozen assets—holds, the carrier's mission will likely transition from deterrence to peacekeeping, ensuring the smooth reopening of global trade routes.

Macron's East Africa Tour: Redefining France's Role on the Continent

French President Emmanuel Macron has begun a three-country tour of East Africa, seeking to rebuild …
The Lead: Macron's Diplomatic Efforts French President Emmanuel Macron has started a tour of East Africa as Paris seeks to rebuild its influence on the continent after a series of setbacks, especially in its former West African colonies. Macron's Tour and Its Objectives Macron began the three-country tour in Egypt on Saturday, which will also take him to Kenya and Ethiopia. He will cohost a summit in English-speaking Kenya on Monday and Tuesday as France seeks to redefine its role in Africa, moving away from its postcolonial role towards closer cooperation. Economic Cooperation and Summit The summit will bring together African leaders and business executives, with several agreements between French and Kenyan companies set to be signed during the visit to boost economic and commercial cooperation. The “Africa Forward” summit will be the first in an Anglophone country attended by Macron since he took office in 2017. Africa's Changing Balance of Power Africa’s changing balance of power is a significant factor in Macron's tour. France colonised large parts of West and Central Africa, and maintained excessive political and economic influence long after independence. However, there is a growing push for more equal, win-win partnerships, tighter control over natural resources and broader alliances beyond traditional Western partners. The Sahel Region: A Turning Point Anti-French sentiment has generally grown alongside political instability, military coups and rising competition from other international powers. The sharpest rupture has come in the Sahel region, where Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger have seen coups followed by rapidly deteriorating relations with France. Can Macron Succeed in Reshaping France's Africa Policy? Macron is seeking to reshape France’s Africa policy, replacing traditional influence with what he calls partnerships. He is also pushing for deeper cultural and educational cooperation focused on entrepreneurship, climate and youth engagement. Such efforts are seen as France’s attempt to reinvent its postcolonial relationship with African states and compete with powers like China and Russia.

US-Iran Ceasefire Under Strain as Gulf States Report Drone Attacks

A fragile ceasefire between the US and Iran is facing increasing pressure as multiple Gulf states r…
The Fragile Ceasefire Tested by Drone AttacksA fragile ceasefire in the US-Israel war on Iran is coming under growing strain as several Gulf countries have reported drone attacks. Qatar confirmed that a drone struck a cargo ship in its waters, sparking a fire, while Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates reported repelling drone attacks. Though no casualties were reported in these incidents, they have intensified pressure on the ceasefire agreement that took effect on April 8.Strategic Waterway Becomes BattlegroundThe naval confrontation in the Gulf region has escalated, with Iran restricting traffic through the Strait of Hormuz—a critical waterway through which a fifth of global oil trade transpired before the conflict. Meanwhile, the United States has imposed a blockade on Iranian ports. This strategic chokepoint has become a focal point of tensions, with multiple attacks reported on commercial vessels in recent days.Escalating Military ActionsThe military situation has deteriorated significantly over the past week. On Friday, the US struck two Iranian oil tankers, claiming they were attempting to breach its blockade of Iranian ports. The UAE reported consecutive attacks from Iranian missiles and drones, which Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) denied. In response, the IRGC Navy has warned that any attack on Iranian vessels would trigger a "heavy assault" on US military bases in the region.Diplomatic Efforts Amid Rising TensionsDespite the escalating violence, diplomatic efforts continue. Qatar's Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani has engaged in mediation, meeting with US Secretary of State Marc Rubio and speaking with Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. Qatar is urging all parties to respond to mediation efforts and reach a lasting peace agreement. Iran is currently evaluating a 14-point proposal from Washington, with frozen assets and war reparations among the contentious issues.Regional Implications and Future OutlookThe situation remains precarious, with both sides exchanging threats while attempting to maintain the ceasefire. Iranian officials have emphasized that their "restraint is over" and warned against further aggression. Meanwhile, Iranian citizens express mixed sentiments, showing both nationalist support and frustration over economic difficulties caused by the conflict. The coming weeks will be critical in determining whether diplomatic efforts can de-escalate tensions or if the fragile ceasefire will completely collapse, potentially leading to a wider regional conflict.

Decoding AI: A Comprehensive Glossary of Key Terms

The article provides a comprehensive glossary of key AI terms, aiming to help readers understand th…
Breaking Down the Complex Language of AI Artificial intelligence is changing the world, and simultaneously inventing a whole new language to describe how it’s doing it. Spend five minutes reading about AI and you’ll run into LLMs, RAG, RLHF, and a dozen other terms that can make even very smart people in the tech world feel insecure. This glossary is our attempt to fix that. We update it regularly as the field evolves, so consider it a living document, much like the AI systems it describes. Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) Artificial general intelligence, or AGI, is a nebulous term. But it generally refers to AI that’s more capable than the average human at many, if not most, tasks. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman once described AGI as the “equivalent of a median human that you could hire as a co-worker.” Meanwhile, OpenAI’s charter defines AGI as “highly autonomous systems that outperform humans at most economically valuable work.” Google DeepMind’s understanding differs slightly from these two definitions; the lab views AGI as “AI that’s at least as capable as humans at most cognitive tasks.” Confused? Not to worry — so are experts at the forefront of AI research. AI Agent An AI agent refers to a tool that uses AI technologies to perform a series of tasks on your behalf — beyond what a more basic AI chatbot could do — such as filing expenses, booking tickets or a table at a restaurant, or even writing and maintaining code. However, as we’ve explained before, there are lots of moving pieces in this emergent space, so “AI agent” might mean different things to different people. Infrastructure is also still being built out to deliver on its envisaged capabilities. But the basic concept implies an autonomous system that may draw on multiple AI systems to carry out multistep tasks. API Endpoints Think of API endpoints as “buttons” on the back of a piece of software that other programs can press to make it do things. Developers use these interfaces to build integrations — for example, allowing one application to pull data from another, or enabling an AI agent to control third-party services directly without a human manually operating each interface. Most smart home devices and connected platforms have these hidden buttons available, even if ordinary users never see or interact with them. As AI agents grow more capable, they are increasingly able to find and use these endpoints on their own, opening up powerful — and sometimes unexpected — possibilities for automation. Chain-of-Thought Reasoning Given a simple question, a human brain can answer without even thinking too much about it — things like “which animal is taller, a giraffe or a cat?” But in many cases, you often need a pen and paper to come up with the right answer because there are intermediary steps. For instance, if a farmer has chickens and cows, and together they have 40 heads and 120 legs, you might need to write down a simple equation to come up with the answer (20 chickens and 20 cows). Coding Agent This is a more specific concept that an “AI agent,” which means a program that can take actions on its own, step by step, to complete a goal. A coding agent is a specialized version applied to software development. Rather than simply suggesting code for a human to review and paste in, a coding agent can write, test, and debug code autonomously, handling the kind of iterative, trial-and-error work that typically consumes a developer’s day. Compute Although somewhat of a multivalent term, compute generally refers to the vital computational power that allows AI models to operate. This type of processing fuels the AI industry, giving it the ability to train and deploy its powerful models. The term is often a shorthand for the kinds of hardware that provides the computational power — things like GPUs, CPUs, TPUs, and other forms of infrastructure that form the bedrock of the modern AI industry. Deep Learning A subset of self-improving machine learning in which AI algorithms are designed with a multi-layered, artificial neural network (ANN) structure. This allows them to make more complex correlations compared to simpler machine learning-based systems, such as linear models or decision trees.
