Prisoner Review: Stupid Fun Meets a Flawed Script on Sky Atlantic

The Guardian’s review of the six‑part thriller *Prisoner* calls it a noisy, action‑packed series th…
Quick Take: Stupid Fun Meets a Thin PlotThe new Sky Atlantic series Prisoner delivers high‑octane action and occasional laughs, but its reliance on clichés and a muddled script keeps it from becoming more than a mildly enjoyable ride.Premise and Production Choices Behind “Prisoner”The show follows prison guard Amber (played by Izuka Hoyle) as she returns from maternity leave and is thrust into a high‑risk escort mission. After an ambush, Amber and the dangerous inmate Tibor Stone (portrayed by Tahar Rahim) are handcuffed together, forcing an uneasy partnership as they flee across London.Six‑part action thriller, each episode roughly an hour long.Directed by a team of seasoned UK television producers, aiming for a gritty, cinematic feel.Key cast includes Eddie Marsan as the hard‑bitten detective Alex and Catherine McCormack as his boss Josephine.Ratings, Episode Count, and Audience ReachWhile concrete viewership numbers are still emerging, the series’ distribution strategy is clear:Six episodes released weekly on Sky Atlantic.Available for streaming on Now immediately after broadcast.Targeted at fans of fast‑paced crime dramas and action‑heavy TV movies. Why the Series Struggles to Rise Above TV‑B‑Movie TropesThe review highlights several weaknesses that hinder the show’s impact:Over‑reliance on generic shoot‑outs (“Kapow! Boom! Shooty‑shooty!”) without deeper narrative payoff.Inconsistent character development, especially for the antagonist Harrison Dempsey (played by Brían F O’Byrne).Plot holes, such as implausible weapon‑manufacturing scenes and under‑explored moral dilemmas.Mixed performances, with some actors unable to elevate the thin script.Outlook: Can “Prisoner” Find a Cult Following?Despite its flaws, the series may attract a niche audience that appreciates its kinetic energy and occasional dark humor. If the show can leverage its strong cast and the novelty of the handcuffed‑together premise, it could develop a modest cult following on streaming platforms, even if it never achieves mainstream acclaim.

The Foxes' Miracle: 10 Years of Leicester City's Premier League Triumph

As the 10th anniversary of Leicester City's historic Premier League title approaches, manager Claud…
The Foxes' Miracle: A Decade of ReflectionAs the 10th anniversary of Leicester City's historic Premier League title approaches, the club's manager and key players look back on what is widely regarded as the greatest sporting miracle of the modern era. The narrative has shifted from a simple underdog story to a complex analysis of strategic pragmatism, cultural cohesion, and the unshakeable belief of a squad that refused to accept their limitations. The Pragmatic Road to GloryThe foundation of the title win was built on a philosophy of incremental ambition rather than immediate grandiosity. Claudio Ranieri revealed that the season began with a strictly pragmatic target: securing 40 points to ensure survival. This low-bar approach allowed the players to breathe, but it was the subsequent escalation of goals that defined their ascent. When they reached the Europa League, the target became Europe; upon qualifying for the Champions League, the mandate shifted to 'this year or never again.'Initial Goal: 40 points for safety.Mid-Season Goal: Qualification for European competition.Final Goal: Champions League qualification and the Premier League title. This strategy, coupled with Riyad Mahrez's persistent questioning of the squad's potential, created a psychological shift from doubt to destiny. Ranieri, a pragmatic man, knew the team was capable of something special, but the players' internal belief was the catalyst that turned a 'little team' into a champion. The Cultural Impact DataThe victory was not just a footballing achievement; it was a cultural phenomenon that transcended the sport. The ownership of Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha played a pivotal role in fostering a family-like culture that made the squad feel touchable and united. This unity was reflected in the club's diverse community, particularly the strong bond formed with the local Indian community, who felt a newfound sense of belonging and shared identity with the club. The global impact was immediate and overwhelming. From international recognition to a performance by Andrea Bocelli at the King Power Stadium, the 'Foxes' story captivated the world. The players found themselves celebrated not just as athletes, but as legends, with the title serving as a bridge between cultures and communities. The Legacy of the UnderdogLeicester City's triumph has permanently altered the landscape of the Premier League. It proved that financial dominance is not the sole determinant of success and that mentality, effort, and cultural cohesion can overcome the odds. The 'Foxes' legacy serves as a blueprint for future underdog stories, demonstrating that the most difficult hurdle is often the belief that the impossible cannot be achieved.

The Departure of Liverpool's Legends Liverpool is on the cusp of a significant transition as several legendary players are set to leave the club. The departures of Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson at the end of this season, coupled with Trent Alexander-Arnold's move to Real Madrid last summer, mark the end of an era for the Reds. The Impact of Experienced Players Leaving The players leaving are not just any ordinary players; they are highly experienced and have been instrumental in Liverpool's success over the years. Virgil van Dijk, Alisson, Robertson, and Salah have all been part of Liverpool's top-performing squad, contributing significantly to their Premier League title win five years ago and last season's success. The Data Analysis Salah (313) and Robertson (273) are fifth and seventh, respectively, for most Premier League appearances for Liverpool. Robertson and Salah have played 257 Premier League games together; only 15 duos have played together more in Premier League history. The Impact Analysis The departure of these experienced players will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the team's dynamics. Their experience of playing alongside one another is invaluable, and building up that rapport matters. New players will need to step up and form strong connections with the remaining team members. The Prediction Liverpool has already started rebuilding with the arrival of Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak, and Milos Kerkez last summer. While it's a challenging task to replace the departing legends, these new players have shown glimpses of their potential. The team's ability to adapt and form a cohesive unit will be crucial in determining their success in the upcoming seasons.

Apple Surprised by AI-Driven Demand for Macs

The Unexpected Surge in Mac Sales Apple's recent quarter saw iPhone sales and Services revenue take center stage, but the Mac segment quietly outperformed expectations. The tech giant reported $8.4 billion in Mac revenue for Q2, ended March 28, beating Wall Street's estimate of $8 billion. AI-Driven Demand Mac sales were up 6% year-over-year, defying expectations of flat growth. CEO Tim Cook attributed the growth to customers using Macs for local AI models, such as OpenClaw. The Mac mini and Mac Studio devices sold out in recent weeks, contributing to the surprise demand. The Role of New Product Launches Apple's recent product launches, including the MacBook Neo, played a significant role in the Mac sales growth. Cook described customer demand for the Neo as "off the charts" and higher than expected. Enterprise Demand and Market Trends Enterprise demand for Macs was a contributing factor, with companies like Perplexity turning to Macs for building AI assistants. The Mac mini was the top-selling desktop in China, a market experiencing high demand for AI-related products. School systems, such as Kansas City Public Schools, are also adopting Macs, with some dropping Chromebooks for the MacBook Neo. The Future Outlook Despite the strong demand, Mac revenue was flat on a quarter-over-quarter basis. Cook warned that it may take Apple "several months" to reach supply-demand balance on the Mac mini and Studio models.

Arsenal vs Fulham: Premier League Match Could Shift Title Race Dynamics

Arsenal faces Fulham in a crucial Premier League match that could re-establish their six-point lead…
The Premier League Title Race Heats Up Arsenal takes on Fulham at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, May 2, in a match that could significantly influence the Premier League title race. The Gunners are looking to re-establish a six-point lead over Manchester City, who recently closed the gap after their 2-1 victory over Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium. Arsenal's Opportunity to Regain Momentum Despite City's recent surge, Arsenal still holds the upper hand, according to data analysts Opta. However, a slip-up against Fulham could change the dynamics entirely. The London rivals are 10th in the league and still in contention for European qualification, making them a formidable opponent. Key Match Statistics and Predictions Fulham have played Arsenal 32 times away in all competitions and have never won. Arsenal beat Fulham 1-0 in the reverse fixture earlier this season. Fulham's last win over Arsenal was a 2-1 home victory two seasons ago. Team News and Predicted Lineups Arsenal has some injury concerns, with Jurrien Timber and Mikel Merino out, but Riccardo Calafiori could return to the starting lineup. Fulham's Alex Iwobi is out with a thigh problem, but Ryan Sessegnon might return from a recent knock. The Impact on the Title Race A win for Arsenal would put significant pressure on Manchester City, who face Everton on Monday. City's record at Everton is impressive, but Arsenal's match against Fulham offers a crucial opportunity to regain momentum in the title race. The Road to the Title Arsenal's path to their first English league title since 2004 is challenging, with a tough fixture schedule ahead. However, a win against Fulham could be a decisive step towards achieving their goal.

Georg Baselitz’s Provocative Legacy: Confronting the Holocaust Through Art

The Guardian reflects on the death of German painter Georg Baselitz, whose work relentlessly forced…
Baselitz as a Living Thread of HistoryGeorg Baselitz (born 1938) died in 2026, leaving behind a body of work that directly channels the trauma of the Third Reich. Having been seven when the Nazi regime fell, he retained vivid personal memories that later fueled his most confrontational paintings.Born in East Germany, experienced both Nazi and communist oppression.Moved to West Germany in the early 1960s, shocking the post‑war art scene.Artistic Confrontations: The ‘Heroes’ Series and Zombie HitlerBaselitz’s early 1960s pieces, such as Die große Nacht im Eimer, depicted grotesque, semi‑nazi figures that forced viewers to confront lingering shame. His zombie Hitler woodcarving was displayed in the German Pavilion at the 1980 Venice Biennale, alongside Anselm Kiefer, turning the neoclassical building into a site of deliberate historical provocation.Series “Heroes” – uniformed youths with blood‑spattered limbs, symbolising the violent myth of the German soldier.Upside‑down German eagles – visual metaphor for a nation turned on its head.Impact on German Cultural MemoryBaselitz’s relentless exposure of Nazi imagery challenged West Germany’s post‑war desire to forget. By embedding the trauma in high‑profile venues, he compelled institutions and audiences to reckon with the past, influencing subsequent generations of artists who address collective guilt.Set a precedent for confronting historical atrocities in major exhibitions.Inspired debates on the limits of artistic provocation versus perceived fascist sympathies.Future Outlook: The Enduring Relevance of Baselitz’s ProvocationWith Baselitz now part of history, curators and scholars are tasked with preserving his confrontational legacy. Upcoming retrospectives and academic symposia are expected to re‑examine his work as a template for how art can serve as a moral compass in societies wrestling with dark chapters.Planned major retrospective at the Berlin State Museums in 2027.Increased scholarly focus on the ethics of representing trauma in visual culture.

Shakhtar Donetsk vs Crystal Palace: Europa Conference League Semi-Final Preview

Crystal Palace faces Shakhtar Donetsk in the first leg of the Europa Conference League semi-final, …
The Lead Crystal Palace and Shakhtar Donetsk prepare to face off in the first leg of the Europa Conference League semi-final, with both teams having compelling stories to tell in this European competition. The match takes place in Krakow with kickoff scheduled for 8pm BST. The Teams' European Journeys Crystal Palace, who took 120 years to win their first major trophy, are seeking to make it "two in two" under Oliver Glasner in his final weeks at the club. They advanced to the semi-finals with a 3-0 win at home against Fiorentina in the first quarter-final leg, followed by a 2-1 loss in the second. Shakhtar Donetsk, led by former Atlético Madrid and Turkey midfielder Arda Turan, are on course for a league title in their manager's first season. The Ukrainian club is eyeing their second European trophy, having won the Uefa Cup in 2009 before the Europa League rebrand. They reached the last four with a 5-2 aggregate victory over AZ Alkmaar. The Ukrainian Club's Resilience Shakhtar's European campaign has been remarkable given the circumstances. All of their "home" Conference League matches this season have been played at the Henryk Reyman Municipal Stadium in Poland due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The club has shown remarkable resilience, having lost most foreign players after special FIFA regulations allowed them to leave for free following Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022. "There is war in Ukraine and yet people live their lives," said Turan. "Every day shows that this nation never gives up." The Road to the Final The winner of this tie will face either Nottingham Forest or Aston Villa in the Europa Conference League final. Shakhtar reached the last four of the Europa League in 2016 and 2020 before the 2022 invasion changed everything for the club.

Melanie C Opens Up About Her Spice Girls Days Melanie C, also known as Mel C, has spoken about her experiences as part of the iconic Spice Girls and her solo career. In a recent interview, she shared stories about her early days as a raver, her time with the Spice Girls, and her encounters with other celebrities. Raving and the Spice Girls Melanie C revealed that she was a hardcore raver in her early 20s, discovering the scene on a holiday without her parents. She attended clubs like Berwick Manor and The Cross in London, where she felt a sense of freedom and self-expression. However, her life took a dramatic turn with the rise of the Spice Girls, leaving little time for socializing or raving. Tattoos and Public Image Melanie C also discussed her famous tattoos, which she got during her time with the Spice Girls. She recalled getting her first tattoo at a shop called Tattoomania in LA, along with her bandmates. While she initially felt that her tattoos made her look less ordinary, she now loves them and sees them as a part of her identity. A Date with Anthony Kiedis One of the most surprising revelations was Melanie C's date with Red Hot Chili Peppers frontman Anthony Kiedis. She shared that she was working with Rick Rubin in LA, who produced some tracks for her solo debut album Northern Star. Rubin played her the song 'Emit Remmus,' which Kiedis had written about her. While they did go on a date, Melanie C described it as a brief encounter rather than a fully formed relationship. Reflections on Her Career Throughout the interview, Melanie C showed a sense of pride and accomplishment in her career, from her early days as a Spice Girl to her solo work and collaborations. When asked which spice she would be, she jokingly suggested she might be a 'five spice,' reflecting her versatility as an artist.

The Purge but for Sex? One Night Only's Bizarre Premise Challenges Romcom Conventions

The upcoming romantic comedy 'One Night Only' presents a bizarre premise where single people are on…
The Bizarre Premise Behind One Night Only For the most part, the trailer for the upcoming film One Night Only looks like the sweetest possible version of a romcom. A handsome, sensitive-looking man (played by Callum Turner) flirts relentlessly with a big-eyed oddball in a sexy dress (played by Monica Barbaro). They bump into each other, nudge each other, roll their eyes at each other. As a YouTube comment underneath the trailer (that has been liked more than 3,000 times) says: "Romantic comedies are back." A Government-Mandated Night of Passion However, tucked away in this adorable little trailer is a premise that might just be the most confusing in living memory. As Turner's character walks lovelorn through the streets of New York City, his voiceover says: "Finding love is hard enough. Try doing it on the one night of the year single people are legally allowed to have sex." The trailer then hurries along to another procession of meet-cutes and prolonged eye contact. But that doesn't really matter, because you're left thinking: "Wait, the one night of the year where single people are legally allowed to have sex? What the hell?" This, apparently, is the movie. Two cuties meet by chance, and are separated, and have to race across the city to find each other before the sun comes up so that they can enjoy a bout of government-mandated sexual intercourse. It's a tale as old as time. The Practical Implications of a Legal Sex Night Clearly, this raises far more questions than it answers. Is One Night Only basically The Purge, but with all the terror of violence replaced by an increased risk of contracting chlamydia? More importantly, if there really is only one night a year where single people can have sex with impunity, how the hell is this even governed? Judging by the state of the trailer, it seems to mean that everyone just claps eyes on someone and then starts banging them wherever they happen to be, whether that's a restaurant or just in the street like a pair of horny rats. Why is this? Why don't people just go back to their houses and then have sex? Does Sex Night also happen to fall upon a citywide taxi strike? Also, how is this even enforced? Is there a government department that spends its days working out, with precise clarity, the point at which someone stops becoming single, and is therefore allowed to have as much sex as they want on any day of the year? Is it marriage? Is it the first time someone declares their love? If you wanted to be particularly Scandinavian about it, you might argue that sex itself is an act of union, and therefore any moment of penetration instantaneously suspends the notion of singledom. And if that's the case, then surely everyone can just have sex whenever and there's nothing illegal about it. And what about all the unexpected pregnancies this will cause. Should there be a sequel set nine months to the day after One Night Only, full of people mournfully staring into the eyes of all the newborn infants whose sheer existence causes a permanent sense of regret to weigh down their souls? Will this even be addressed in One Night Only? Is anyone going to answer me? Possible Metaphors in Contemporary Society Clearly this has to be a metaphor for something, but clearly the current level of evidence isn't giving much away. Through one lens, you could suppose that it's possible that One Night Only is a clever satire on the US right's crackdown on reproductive rights, and the whole thing is an important and timely statement about the looming threat of a post-Roe worldview that may soon devour the country. But at the same time, maybe this is about Covid? There's something quite pandemicky about the notion that people would have to keep their primal urges at bay in a wholly unnatural way for an extended period of time. Remember how giddily we threw ourselves at each other once restrictions were lifted? Perhaps this is all just an allegory for that. Or both. Or more. Maybe One Night Only is really about capitalism, or ChatGPT or the climate crisis. Maybe it's none of them. Maybe it's just the manifestation of a screenwriter who wished that, just once a year, people would be slightly more inclined to have sex with them. It's honestly hard to say. The Future of "The Purge, but X" Movies Nevertheless, if One Night Only is successful, then it's bound to start an avalanche of "The Purge, but X" movies. What if there was only one night a year when you could have surgery? What if there was only one night a year where you could get a haircut? What if there was only one night a year where you could eat spaghetti with your bare hands? Because, if we're already doing sex, then clearly there are no limits to the Purgiverse's silliness. One Night Only is out in Australian cinemas on 6 August, US cinemas on 7 August and in the UK on 28 August
