Reeves Unveils Cost-of-Living Package: Free Bus Rides and Food Tariff Cuts

Chancellor Rachel Reeves announces a package of measures to ease living costs, including free summe…
The Chancellor's Cost-of-Living Package Chancellor Rachel Reeves is set to promise free summer bus rides for children and cut tariffs on some food imports as part of a package aimed at easing the cost of living crisis. The Great British Summer Savings Scheme The offer of free bus rides for children aged 15 and under during August will form part of what Reeves is calling the 'Great British summer savings scheme'. Before the speech, Reeves said: 'My number one priority is protecting households from rising costs. This summer I want every family to be able to enjoy themselves, that's why we're launching the Great British summer savings scheme, and why we're helping kids with free bus travel throughout August.' Food Tariff Cuts and Economic Impact Reeves will also outline plans to remove tariffs on imports of a list of foods, including biscuits, chocolates, and dried fruits, in the hope of cutting prices for consumers. The Treasury will consult on the details. The measures come as the UK faces an expected rise in inflation later this year, partly due to the Iran conflict. The Road Ahead Reeves's hopes of an economic upturn have been dashed by the Iran conflict, which is widely expected to slow growth and push up inflation. Nevertheless, she is keen to press home the argument that she has 'the right plan' for the economy. With UK inflation falling to 2.8% in April, Reeves's team is highlighting the positive impact of previous measures to reduce household energy bills.

Trump's Gaza Board of Peace Faces Funding Shortfall Amid Controversy

The US-led Board of Peace, founded by Donald Trump to oversee Gaza's reconstruction, faces a critic…
The Funding Crisis The Board of Peace, which was founded by United States President Donald Trump in January to oversee the administration and reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, is facing a crippling cash crunch that threatens to derail its ambitious $70bn reconstruction plan for the devastated enclave. The US-led board recently reported a critical gap between its financial commitments and actual disbursements, warning of an urgent liquidity crisis, according to the Reuters news agency. The Structure of the Board However, experts tracking international aid to Palestinians said the funding shortfall is neither surprising nor purely administrative. Instead, they argued that the reluctance of Arab and European donors stems from the board’s controversial structure, a lack of a viable political horizon for a Palestinian state and Israel’s ongoing military expansion across the besieged enclave. Moath al-Amoudi, an expert in international aid to Palestinians, told Al Jazeera that the heavily publicised pledges are closer to a “talk show” than a genuine humanitarian effort. A History of Empty Promises “Out of the $17bn pledged, the actual liquidity that has reached the ground is zero,” al-Amoudi said. “Donors are terrified of engaging with a board that carries no political vision and treats Gaza merely as an American security protectorate.” The gap between pledges and actual disbursements is a historical constant in the Palestinian context, but the US has a particularly poor track record, al-Amoudi noted. Commercial Guardianship and the $1bn Seats Much of the international hesitation is rooted in the architecture of the Board of Peace itself. Previous Al Jazeera reporting revealed that the board operates as a complex three-tiered governing structure heavily stacked with American billionaires and pro-Israel figures, such as billionaire Marc Rowan, US envoy Steve Witkoff, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner. Humanitarian Aid as Political Blackmail The board’s funding crisis is deeply intertwined with its strict political and security conditions. The three-phased US plan for Gaza explicitly demands the full disarmament of Hamas and all allied Palestinian factions as a prerequisite for reconstruction funds and the opening of border crossings while Israel has continued to violate the terms of an October “ceasefire”. The Yellow Line and Modern Ghettos Beyond the political and structural flaws of the board, the volatile reality on the ground makes meaningful reconstruction nearly impossible. Despite a nominal “ceasefire”, Israeli forces have continued their near-daily violations. According to local medical sources, 828 Palestinians have been killed since the “truce” went into effect.

Israeli lawmakers vote to advance bill to dissolve parliament

Israeli lawmakers have voted to advance a bill to dissolve parliament, paving the way for early ele…
The Move to Dissolve Parliament Israeli lawmakers have voted to advance a bill that would dissolve parliament and pave the way for early elections. In a preliminary reading on Wednesday, 110 out of 120 lawmakers voted in favour and none against, while the rest did not cast their votes. The Road to Early Elections The bill will now pass to a committee before three more parliamentary readings. If it receives final approval, a process that could take weeks, it would trigger an election within 90 days. Polls are currently set to be held before the end of the legislative session on October 27. Pressure on Prime Minister Netanyahu Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is under mounting pressure from ultra-Orthodox parties, while his fractious right-wing coalition appears to be facing possible collapse. Ultra-Orthodox parties accuse Netanyahu of failing to deliver on his promise to pass legislation that would exempt young men of their community from mandatory military service. The Impact on Israeli Politics The vote comes at a pivotal time for Netanyahu, Israel’s longest-serving prime minister, who leads the most right-wing government in the country’s history. Israel has been at war on multiple fronts in Gaza, Lebanon and Iran, while many Israelis blame Netanyahu for the security failure that enabled the Hamas-led attacks on southern Israel on October 7, 2023. “These are the October 7 elections, the elections in which the Israeli public will send home the government of negligence that brought upon us the greatest disaster in the state’s history,” Yair Golan, head of left-wing party the Democrats, wrote on X. The Future Outlook Meanwhile, Netanyahu also faces a long-running corruption trial, while Israel’s President Isaac Herzog is mediating talks to broker a plea deal that could see the 76-year-old leader retire from politics altogether as part of the agreement.

Figma Introduces AI Assistant for Collaborative Design Canvas

Figma has launched an AI assistant that operates within its collaborative canvas, allowing users to…
The Lead: Figma's AI Integration RevolutionFigma has introduced a groundbreaking AI assistant that operates directly within its collaborative canvas, marking a significant evolution in design software capabilities. This new AI agent allows users to leverage natural language prompts to generate new designs, edit existing ones, and automate various design tasks, potentially transforming how design teams collaborate and create. The Technical Breakthrough: Design-Specific AI CapabilitiesThe new AI assistant represents Figma's strategic move to integrate artificial intelligence deeply into its design ecosystem. Unlike generic AI tools, Figma's assistant is specifically fine-tuned for design use, enabling it to understand design contexts and elements with remarkable precision. Users can employ multiple AI agents simultaneously, each handling different tasks, allowing for parallel processing of design iterations and automations. This development builds on Figma's recent partnerships with OpenAI and Anthropic, which brought AI CLI tools like Claude Code and Codex to the platform. The company's chief design officer, Loredana Crisan, emphasized how this technology helps teams focus on strategic decisions rather than tedious execution, stating: "As building software gets easier, what matters most is setting direction: deciding what to work on, how it should function, what the experience should feel like. Teams can now collaborate with agents on the multiplayer canvas to test out ideas, visualize edge cases, and refine concepts together without over-indexing on the more tedious parts."The Financial Impact: Strong Growth Amidst CompetitionFigma's AI integration comes at a time when the company is demonstrating robust financial performance. In the first quarter of 2026, Figma reported revenue of $333.4 million, marking a 46% increase compared to the same period in the previous year. This growth trajectory underscores the company's ability to maintain market momentum despite increasing competition and concerns about AI potentially displacing design work. The company has strategically expanded its capabilities through acquisitions like node-based design tool Weavy and by adding new image editing features to its products. These moves, combined with its AI initiatives, position Figma to address the evolving needs of design professionals in an increasingly AI-augmented creative landscape. The Industry Transformation: AI Reshaping Design WorkflowsFigma's AI assistant launch reflects a broader industry trend where artificial intelligence is becoming integral to creative workflows. The design software market is experiencing significant disruption as companies race to integrate AI capabilities that enhance rather than replace human creativity. Figma faces intense competition from established players like Adobe and Canva, as well as emerging competitors such as Flora, Krea, and Dessn. This technological shift is challenging traditional design processes while simultaneously creating new opportunities for efficiency and innovation. By automating routine tasks and providing intelligent design suggestions, AI tools like Figma's assistant are enabling designers to focus more on strategic thinking, conceptual development, and user experience refinement. The Future Outlook: Convergence of Design and CodeLooking ahead, Figma has outlined ambitious plans to further integrate AI across its product suite and bring design and code closer together. The company intends to expand the AI assistant beyond Figma Design to its other products, creating a more unified AI-powered creative environment. This convergence could potentially bridge the gap between design and development workflows, fostering greater collaboration and efficiency throughout the product development lifecycle. As AI continues to evolve, we can expect Figma and its competitors to further refine their AI offerings, potentially incorporating more sophisticated understanding of design principles, user preferences, and technical constraints. The successful integration of AI in design tools may set new standards for the industry, ultimately benefiting end users through more intuitive, responsive, and human-centered digital products.

Philippines Supreme Court Rejects Bid to Block ICC Arrest Warrant for Senator Ronald dela Rosa

The Philippine Supreme Court denied a petition to halt the International Criminal Court's arrest wa…
The Supreme Court of the Philippines on May 20, 2026 refused to block the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrant for Senator Ronald dela Rosa, a former police chief accused of crimes against humanity linked to the Duterte-era “war on drugs”. The decision removes a legal obstacle and signals that authorities may move to detain the senator despite his disappearance. Court Ruling Clears Path for Senator’s Potential Arrest In a split decision, the justices denied the restraining order sought by dela Rosa’s legal team, stating that the warrant remains valid while other procedural issues remain unresolved. The court noted that the petition’s argument—that a foreign ICC warrant cannot be enforced without a domestic warrant—was not sufficient to halt the arrest process. Petitioner: Senator Ronald "Bato" dela Rosa Key argument: Lack of a local warrant to enforce ICC order Government stance: Justice Secretary Frederick Vida pledged to execute the warrant Presidential office: Spokeswoman Claire Castro affirmed the warrant’s validity Human‑Rights Impact: 12,000‑30,000 Deaths Estimated in Duterte’s Drug War The ICC estimates that between 12,000 and 30,000 people were killed from 2016 to 2019 during President Rodrigo Duterte’s anti‑drug campaign, a period in which dela Rosa served as chief of the National Police and chief enforcer of the crackdown. These figures underpin the crimes‑against‑humanity charges now facing both Duterte and his former lieutenant. Political Ramifications for the Marcos Administration and ICC Relations The ruling places President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in a delicate position. While the administration must respect international obligations, it also faces domestic pressure to protect a high‑profile senator. The decision may affect the Philippines’ diplomatic standing with the ICC and could influence future cooperation on transnational justice matters. What Comes Next: Legal Battles and International Pressure Dela Rosa’s counsel has vowed to pursue all legal remedies, including a motion for reconsideration. Meanwhile, the Department of Justice is expected to interpret the Supreme Court’s order and coordinate any arrest operation. International observers will watch closely to see whether the Philippines proceeds with the ICC warrant or seeks a diplomatic compromise.
