Higher costs, complicated legal risk and heightened security fears suggest that oil traders would sooner avoid buying Gulf crude, even if transit was allowed under Iranian control. Economists at the Belgian thinktank Bruegel have estimated that the world economy "would barely notice the toll" if Tehran successfully retained control of the strait, with the extra cost shouldered primarily by Gulf oil producers. Long-Term Implications for Global Economy The precedent of Iran seizing control of an international waterway raises troubling concerns for international maritime norms. Experts have warned of widespread consequences for the global economy if the strait of Hormuz remains disrupted, with the closure already described as the worst energy supply crisis in history by the head of the International Energy Agency.
