Lucy Caldwell’s “Devotions” Review: A Haunting Blend of Memory, Duty, and Comfort

The Guardian’s review of Lucy Caldwell’s fourth short‑story collection, Devotions, highlights its d…
What Makes “Devotions” Stand Out in Contemporary Short FictionThe Guardian’s critique frames Devotions as a collection that oscillates between “transformational delight” and “psychological threat,” delivering stories that are simultaneously frightening, passionate and comforting. By anchoring each tale in the minutiae of everyday life—whether a New York dive bar or a Scottish gatehouse—Caldwell creates a vivid, immersive reading experience.Exploring the Collection’s Core Themes and Narrative TechniquesAcross the eight stories, Caldwell returns to familiar territories: family dynamics, the pressures of artistic careers, and the relentless pull of memory. In “All Grown Up,” the protagonist Luke confronts his past while trying to sell his childhood home, illustrating how memory can both trap and liberate. “Hamlet, a Love Story” uses meta‑theatrical devices to examine choice versus action, while “The Lady of the House” blends ghost‑story conventions with contemporary anxieties about motherhood and financial strain. The recurring motif of “duty”—to self, to art, to lineage—binds the collection together, offering readers a cohesive emotional through‑line.Pricing, Publication Details, and Market PositionDevotions is published by Faber and priced at £14.99. The paperback release is slated for June 2026, positioning it alongside other high‑profile literary collections from the imprint. By leveraging the Guardian’s review platform, the book gains immediate visibility among discerning literary consumers, potentially boosting first‑month sales in the competitive short‑story market. Why Caldwell’s Latest Collection Resonates with Modern ReadersThe collection’s strength lies in its “panoramic lists of objects” and “sharpness of eye,” which ground the more ethereal themes in tangible reality. In an era where readers seek both escapism and authenticity, Caldwell’s blend of realistic detail and subtle supernatural undertones meets that demand. Moreover, her nuanced portrayal of characters who are “quietly resilient” yet “breakable” mirrors the post‑pandemic emotional landscape, making the stories feel both timely and timeless.Looking Ahead: Caldwell’s Potential Influence on Future Short‑Story PublishingIf Devotions sustains strong critical and commercial momentum, it could signal a renewed appetite for literary short‑story collections that balance literary craft with accessible storytelling. Publishers may be encouraged to invest in similar works that foreground memory and duty, while emerging writers might emulate Caldwell’s technique of intertwining everyday realism with understated hauntings. The collection thus stands as a potential catalyst for a modest resurgence in the short‑form literary market.

The Quest for Extraterrestrial Life Deserves Serious Consideration

The search for extraterrestrial life should not be dismissed as a fringe pursuit. Recent developmen…
The Quest for Extraterrestrial Life Deserves Serious Consideration Daniel Lavelle's recent article on the quest for extraterrestrial life has sparked controversy, with some critics accusing him of taking a dismissive and skeptical approach to the subject. While Lavelle argues that there is no evidence of alien visits to Earth, others point out that this narrow view ignores significant public records and high-level testimony. The Limitations of Skepticism Lavelle's article trots out familiar arguments about interstellar distances and propulsion technology, but critics argue that this approach is too narrow and ignores serious research and policy developments across the world. For example, a symposium on the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) and unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP) research at Durham Law School brought together researchers from several countries and led to the adoption of the Declaration on SETI and UAP Research. The Growing Seriousness of the Scientific Community The scientific community is taking the subject of extraterrestrial life increasingly seriously. Researchers like Dr. Garry Nolan at Stanford have conducted analysis of recovered materials that challenge the "weather balloon" narrative. Additionally, national security officials like Marco Rubio have publicly noted repeated instances of unidentified craft operating over restricted nuclear facilities. The Need for a Balanced Approach Critics argue that Lavelle's dismissive tone ignores a significant constitutional crisis. The continued lack of transparency surrounding these programs is a disservice to democracy. As the national security state operates without oversight, hiding information from the public and Congress, it undermines the very foundations of an informed electorate. The Future of Extraterrestrial Life Research As the debate around extraterrestrial life continues, it is clear that a more balanced and nuanced approach is needed. Rather than dismissing the possibility of non-human intelligence on Earth, researchers and policymakers should engage in a serious and open-minded discussion about the implications of such a discovery.

Afghan-Pakistan Truce Under Strain After University Strike

Tensions escalate between Afghanistan and Pakistan after a university strike in Kunar province kill…
The University Strike and Escalating TensionsIslamabad, Pakistan – Afghanistan's Taliban authorities say Pakistani mortars and missiles struck a university and residential neighborhoods in the eastern province of Kunar on Monday, killing at least seven people and wounding more than 80. Taliban deputy spokesperson Hamdullah Fitrat called the attacks 'unforgivable war crimes' against civilians and academic institutions, while Pakistan's Ministry of Information and Broadcasting rejected the account as a 'blatant lie.'Afghanistan's Ministry of Higher Education reported that about 30 students and professors were among the wounded, with Sayed Jamaluddin Afghani University sustaining extensive damage. The competing claims over the attack have now raised fears that the already fragile ceasefire between the two countries might completely collapse. The Fragile Peace Process in UrumqiThe heightened tensions follow days after peace talks held in the Chinese city of Urumqi between the two sides that Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi described as 'positive.' The talks, hosted by China in early April, brought delegations from both sides together for the first time since the conflict's most intense phase in February and March, when Pakistan struck Kabul multiple times and declared it was in 'open war' with Afghanistan. However, the engagement was thin from the start, with delegations at the diplomatic level and no political contact throughout. Pakistan maintained a firm position, demanding action in writing. 'Until Afghanistan puts something in writing, no verbal commitment will be trusted,' said Mehmood Jan Babar, a Peshawar-based political and security analyst. The Limits of Regional MediationThis is not the first time a diplomatic opening has quickly unraveled. A ceasefire mediated by Qatar and Turkiye in October 2025 was followed by continued low-level clashes. A temporary Eid ceasefire in March was almost immediately disputed, with the Taliban alleging Pakistan carried out dozens of mortar strikes while the truce was still in effect. The most contentious episode came on March 16, when a Pakistani air strike destroyed the Omar Hospital in Kabul, a 2,000-bed addiction treatment facility. Afghan officials put the death toll at more than 400, while the United Nations recorded 143. Pakistan insisted that its target was not the hospital, but nearby military installations and an ammunition depot. The Core TTP DisputeAt the heart of the conflict is a dispute that predates the current fighting. Pakistan accuses the Afghan Taliban of providing sanctuary to the Pakistan Taliban, known by the acronym TTP, which has carried out attacks across Pakistani provinces. Afghanistan rejects accusations that it is sheltering or aiding the TTP and other anti-Pakistan groups.'The Taliban have not accepted Pakistan's main demand in the way Islamabad wants,' said Tameem Bahiss, a Kabul-based security analyst. 'They may be unwilling because of ideological or historical links, or unable because acting against the TTP could create internal divisions. Whatever the reason, the outcome is the same: Pakistan's demands remain unmet.'The Path Forward Without TrustChina's role as host of the Urumqi talks carries significant weight, as Beijing is Pakistan's largest trading partner and has infrastructure investments in both countries. However, analysts note that no agreement is possible without a written guarantee and a guarantor to enforce it.'Pakistan does not want to enter into any agreement that brings it no tangible benefit,' said Babar. 'Until a written commitment comes, nothing else moves.' Afghanistan has its own demands, including keeping borders open, allowing trade, and accommodating Afghan refugees. 'Without a credible verification mechanism, any agreement will remain fragile and may collapse as soon as the next attack or accusation takes place,' warned Bahiss.

Red Hat's Tank OS Revolutionizes Enterprise OpenClaw Deployments with Enhanced Security

Red Hat engineer Sally O'Malley has released Tank OS, a new open source tool that enhances security…
The Lead: Enterprise AI Security Gets a Major Boost Red Hat principal software engineer Sally O'Malley has unveiled Tank OS, a groundbreaking open source tool designed to transform how enterprises deploy and manage OpenClaw AI agents. Released on Tuesday, this innovation comes at a critical time as organizations increasingly adopt AI agents but face mounting security challenges in their implementation. The Technical Breakthrough: Containerized OpenClaw Architecture Tank OS represents a significant advancement in AI agent deployment by leveraging Red Hat's Podman container technology. The tool loads OpenClaw onto Red Hat's Fedora Linux OS within a Podman container, creating a bootable image that automatically launches the AI agent when the computer starts. This "rootless" container approach provides enhanced security by preventing containers from gaining privileges from the underlying machine, effectively isolating each OpenClaw instance. The comprehensive tool includes all necessary components for autonomous OpenClaw operation, including state management for memory retention, API key storage for service access credentials, and other essential features. Users can run multiple Tank OS instances on a single machine for different tasks without sharing credentials, ensuring complete isolation between AI agents. The Security Imperative: Addressing AI Agent Vulnerabilities The development of Tank OS directly responds to documented security risks associated with OpenClaw deployments. Recent incidents include a Meta AI researcher's Claw agent deleting all work emails and another instance downloading a user's WhatsApp DMs in plain text. These vulnerabilities, combined with a growing crop of malware targeting OpenClaw users, highlight the urgent need for secure deployment solutions. "It's an incredibly powerful application, but can also be dangerous if not configured properly," O'Malley acknowledged. "It's not a tool that you can use easily unless you do have some sort of technical experience." While Tank OS requires technical expertise to implement, it provides enterprise-grade security controls that were previously lacking in OpenClaw deployments. The Enterprise Transformation: Scaling AI Agent Management Tank OS specifically targets IT professionals managing corporate fleets of OpenClaw agents, addressing a critical gap in the current ecosystem. By containerizing OpenClaw, Tank OS allows IT teams to update and manage AI agents using the same container orchestration tools they already employ for other enterprise applications. This approach represents a paradigm shift in how organizations will manage AI agents at scale. As O'Malley noted, her interest lies in "how it's going to look scaled out when there are millions of these autonomous agents talking to one another." Tank OS provides the foundation for this future by enabling secure, manageable, and scalable AI agent deployments across enterprise environments. The Competitive Landscape: Tank OS vs. Alternative Solutions Tank OS enters a rapidly evolving market of OpenClaw implementations and alternatives. While NanoClaw offers similar containerization using Docker, Tank OS differentiates itself through its deep integration with Red Hat's ecosystem and focus on enterprise use cases. O'Malley's position as an OpenClaw maintainer gives her unique insights into the project's direction and requirements. "This was a fun project that I put together on the weekend that I knew would be a really good fit for AI and where we're going," O'Malley explained, emphasizing her commitment to making advanced AI technology accessible to both power users and enterprise IT departments. The Future Outlook: Enterprise AI Adoption Accelerates The release of Tank OS signals a maturation of the AI agent ecosystem, moving from experimental deployments to enterprise-grade implementations. As organizations increasingly recognize the value of local AI agents while remaining concerned about security risks, solutions like Tank OS will become essential infrastructure components. Looking ahead, we can expect continued innovation in AI agent security and management, with containerization likely becoming the standard deployment approach. Red Hat's involvement through both Tank OS and O'Malley's dual role as Red Hat engineer and OpenClaw maintainer positions the company at the forefront of this emerging enterprise AI landscape. "I joined OpenClaw because I see it working to enable everyone to run AI in a safe way, that's open," O'Malley stated, reflecting the project's core mission. Tank OS represents a significant step toward achieving that vision in enterprise environments, balancing openness with the security controls required for organizational adoption.

Salon Review: A Fabulous Party of Art and Conversation

The article reviews a salon exhibition featuring 43 paintings by various artists, curated by Matthe…
The Concept of a Salon Exhibition The gallery appears to have been set for a party. Mismatched chairs are scattered through the space – ornate gothic throne, wing-backed recliner, stackable school chair. Each points towards a white window painted on to the wall, into which one of 43 equally miscellaneous paintings has been inserted. These paintings are the other party guests, and you must decide who to sit with. Engaging with the Artworks It is a ragtag bunch, and so I decide to start with the people I recognise. But on my way to meet a portrait by Denzil Forrester of the young Haile Selassie, its surface resembling scuffed and polished stone, I am distracted by the glitter of light from a small work by Andrew Cranston. It comes from a young woman who seems to have been transplanted from Dumbarton into a glamorous late Vuillard, her coat shimmering like the scales of a fish caught by late summer sun. The Curator's Vision The host of this “salon”, and the person whose sensibility knits it together, is Matthew Higgs, director of New York’s White Columns gallery and magpie impresario. Some of these artists he has worked with for years, while others, such as Adam Keay, who contributes an oddly compelling beach scene, were invited on the strength of a chance encounter. The Experience of Discovery If you can stick it out to the 40-minute point at which things get really psychedelic, you will discover that you have attracted the attention of security guards. This is because exhibitions are not, for the most part, designed to encourage you to spend a long time in front of art works so much as move you through to the gift shop. But Higgs understands that to have a meaningful experience with a painting requires no technical expertise but only time, an open mind and, ideally, a chair.

FIFA Faces Backlash Over Politicised Peace Prize to Trump Ahead of World Cup

With the 2026 World Cup only weeks away, FIFA is under fire for awarding its inaugural peace prize …
Six weeks before the 2026 World Cup, FIFA has been slammed for awarding its first peace prize to U.S. President Donald Trump, raising questions about the governing body’s political neutrality.Criticism Over FIFA’s Inaugural Peace Prize to Donald TrumpNorwegian Football Association president Lise Klaveness urged FIFA to scrap the award, suggesting that such recognitions be left to the Nobel Institute in Oslo. The prize was presented by FIFA president Gianni Infantino at the World Cup draw in December, a move many saw as a “consolation prize” for Trump, who has repeatedly claimed he deserves a Nobel Peace Prize.Klaveness told an online briefing that the award falls outside FIFA’s mandate and risks entangling the sport with partisan politics. She added that the NFF will write to FIFA demanding a transparent investigation into the role of nonprofit FairSquare, which has alleged possible breaches of FIFA’s own ethical guidelines.Financial and Governance Stakes of the ControversyFIFA has not disclosed any monetary value attached to the peace prize. The controversy coincides with FIFA’s announcement of increased prize money for all 48 World Cup teams, heightening scrutiny of its financial stewardship.FairSquare’s complaint could trigger governance reviews, potentially affecting sponsorships and donor confidence.Implications for Football’s Credibility and Human Rights AgendaAustralian midfielder Jackson Irvine warned that the award undermines FIFA’s Human Rights Policy, calling it a “mockery of the human rights charter.” He highlighted recent U.S. military actions in Venezuela and Iran as evidence that the prize contradicts the sport’s stated commitment to peace and inclusion.FIFA’s 2017 Human Rights Framework, which underpins the 2026 tournament’s inclusion and anti‑discrimination measures, now faces pressure to demonstrate real‑world impact amid concerns over U.S. immigration policies and other rights‑related issues. What the Future Holds for FIFA’s Governance and Peace AwardsAnalysts predict that sustained criticism could force FIFA to either redesign the peace prize with an independent jury or discontinue it altogether. A transparent investigation into FairSquare’s allegations may become a prerequisite for restoring stakeholder trust.Should FIFA choose to retain the award, it will likely need stricter criteria, clearer separation from political figures, and robust oversight mechanisms to avoid further reputational damage.

Jimmy Kimmel Defends Melania Trump 'Widow' Joke Amid Trumps' Call for His Firing

Jimmy Kimmel refused to apologize for a joke describing Melania Trump as glowing 'like an expectant…
The Comedian's Stand Against Political PressureJimmy Kimmel has refused to apologize for a controversial joke made days before the White House correspondents' dinner shooting in which he described Melania Trump as glowing "like an expectant widow." The ABC host faced intense backlash from both Donald Trump and the first lady, who accused him of inciting violence and called for his immediate firing from the network. The Joke That Sparked the ControversyDuring a skit pretending to be the MC for the White House correspondents' dinner, Kimmel made the remark: "Our first lady Melania is here. So beautiful, Mrs Trump, you have a glow like an expectant widow." The joke, made three days before the alleged assassination attempt, was intended as a light-hearted comment about the couple's significant age difference, according to Kimmel's defense."Obviously, it was a joke about their age difference and the look of joy we see on her face every time they're together," Kimmel explained during his Monday night monologue. "It was a very light roast joke about the fact that he's almost 80 and she's younger than I am. It was not – by any stretch of the definition – a call to assassination."The Trumps' Response and AccusationsMelania Trump took to social media to condemn Kimmel, stating: "Kimmel's hateful and violent rhetoric is intended to divide our country. His monologue about my family isn't comedy- his words are corrosive and deepens the political sickness within America. People like Kimmel shouldn't have the opportunity to enter our homes each evening to spread hate."She accused Kimmel of hiding behind ABC and called on the network to "take a stand" against his "atrocious behavior." Donald Trump echoed these sentiments in a Truth Social post, demanding that "Jimmy Kimmel should be immediately fired by Disney and ABC." The former president claimed Kimmel made a "despicable call to violence."Kimmel's Defense and Free Speech StanceIn response to the Trumps' criticism, Kimmel stood firm on his right to free speech. "I've been very vocal for many years, speaking out against gun violence, in particular," he stated. "But I understand that the first lady had a stressful experience over the weekend, and probably every weekend is pretty stressful in that house."Kimmel also pointed out the timing of his joke, which was made three days before the dinner shooting. "If you want us to believe that a joke I made three days before this dinner had any effect on anything that happened, well then, maybe someone should look into this psychic lady too," he quipped.Broader Implications for Media and PoliticsThe controversy comes amid heightened tensions between late-night hosts and political figures, particularly the Trumps. This incident follows a similar situation in September 2025 when ABC suspended Kimmel after Brendan Carr, the pro-Trump chair of the Federal Communications Commission, threatened the network over jokes the comedian made about the president. The Trumps' call for Kimmel's ouster comes as critics highlight the violent rhetoric from the White House over the years, including when Donald Trump called on a crowd to "knock the crap out" of protesters and urged supporters to "fight like hell" after his 2020 election defeat. What Happens Next in the Ongoing FeudAs the dust settles from this latest controversy, the relationship between late-night comedy and political figures remains strained. Kimmel has shown no indication of backing down from his critical stance toward the Trump administration, while the former president continues to target media personalities who criticize him.The incident also raises questions about the boundaries of political comedy in an increasingly polarized media landscape. With the 2026 election season approaching, such clashes between entertainers and politicians may become more frequent, testing the limits of free speech and the role of comedy in political discourse.
