US Approves $16.5 Billion Arms Deal with Gulf States Amid Rising Iran Tensions

The US has approved a $16.5 billion arms deal with the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Jordan as …
The United States Department of State has approved a significant arms deal worth $16.5 billion to Gulf states, including the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Jordan. This move comes as tensions between the US and Iran continue to intensify. The deal includes $8.4 billion worth of arms to the United Arab Emirates, which will be used to purchase drones, missiles, radar systems, and F-16 aircraft. Additionally, the US has approved roughly $8 billion for air and missile defense radar systems to Kuwait. Jordan will receive an additional $70.5 million to cover aircraft and munition support. The State Department stated that the proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a major defense partner. The UAE is considered a force for political stability and economic progress in the Middle East. This arms deal comes amid ever-increasing tensions between the US and Iran. The administration of US President Donald Trump joined Israel in attacking Iran on February 28, prompting fears of a protracted regional conflict. The war has also caused energy prices around the world to surge. Iran has largely choked off tanker shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway through which a fifth of the world’s oil and gas travels. Gas prices in the United States have jumped from $3.10 per gallon ($0.82 per litre) on average this time last month to $3.88 ($1.02 per litre) on Thursday, according to the American Automobile Association (AAA). The principal contractors in Thursday’s proposed sales will include RTX Corporation, Northrop Grumman, and Lockheed Martin Corporation. Despite the deals, all three companies’ stocks are trending downward on Wall Street. The Pentagon is seeking more money to fund the war, with the US Department of Defense seeking an additional $200 billion, according to The Associated Press. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth acknowledged that he was seeking a significant spending boost from Congress.

Sanders and AOC Push for Pause on New AI Datacenter Construction

Progressive lawmakers Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have introduced a bill to tempora…
Progressive lawmakers Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have unveiled a bill to place a moratorium on the construction of AI datacenters in the US. The proposed pause aims to ensure the AI boom benefits workers, protects the environment, and does not harm communities. The bill's introduction comes amid growing concerns about the rapid buildout of AI infrastructure and its impact on energy consumption, electricity bills, and the climate crisis. Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez argue that a temporary ban would give the US government time to create strong federal safeguards for AI.“AI and robotics are creating the most sweeping technological revolution in the history of humanity,” Sanders said. “The scale, scope, and speed of that change is unprecedented. Congress is way behind where it should be in understanding the nature of this revolution and its impacts.”The proposal has gained traction, with at least 11 states considering similar policies. Advocacy groups, including Food and Water Watch, have also called for a federal datacenter moratorium, citing concerns about the sector's impacts on electricity bills and the climate crisis. The bill's supporters argue that datacenters' massive energy consumption and water usage have sparked controversy, especially in drought-ridden areas. If current trends continue, datacenters may account for nearly half of all US emissions from the power sector.“We cannot sit back and allow a handful of billionaire Big Tech oligarchs to make decisions that will reshape our economy, our democracy and the future of humanity,” Sanders said. “We need serious public debate and democratic oversight over this enormously consequential issue. The time for action is now.”

The SBA's Politicization Hurts Small Businesses

The Small Business Administration's new policy of denying loans to non-citizen small business owner…
The recent decision by the Small Business Administration (SBA) to deny loans to small business owners who are not US citizens has raised concerns about the politicization of the agency. Kelly Loeffler, the new administrator of the SBA, announced that the agency would no longer approve loans to small business owners unless they are US citizens, effectively excluding legal immigrants with green cards and full residency from accessing loans. This move has been criticized for being a political decision that harms small businesses and the economy. The SBA's mission is to support small businesses, which are the backbone of the US economy. By denying loans to certain entrepreneurs, the agency is limiting access to capital and hindering the growth of small businesses that could benefit their communities and the country at large. The decision is also seen as a reaction against the Biden administration's efforts to promote diversity and inclusion. Under Biden, the SBA had often featured diverse groups of business owners in its marketing materials, but this new policy seems to be tailoring the message to serve the Trump administration's political agenda.Supporting small businesses should not be a controversial position, and most of the time it is not. However, the SBA's politicization has made it a propaganda tool for the party in power, rather than a neutral agency serving the interests of small businesses. To address this issue, some suggest taking the SBA out of the government and spinning it off into a separate entity, similar to the Manufacturing Extension Partnership or the MITRE Corporation. This entity would be funded by both the government and private industry and would be required to report to Congress through its existing small business committees. The goal of this new entity would be to coordinate government loan guarantees, assist with federal funding, and provide training, counseling, and support to small businesses. This would help to insulate the agency from political cycles and ensure that it serves the interests of small businesses, rather than the interests of the party in power.
