Grace Dent and Anna Haugh Take Over as New MasterChef Hosts

British food critic and journalist Grace Dent and Irish chef Anna Haugh have taken over as the new co-hosts of the popular cooking competition MasterChef. The duo, who have previously served as guest judges on the show, bring their unique blend of humor, warmth, and culinary expertise to the program.Dent, who grew up watching MasterChef with her father, says she never imagined she'd be hosting the show. 'We used to laugh our heads off at the critics,' she recalls. 'Just utterly ridiculous people, with their overblown egos, thinking their opinions on food matter. Who are these people?'Haugh and Dent make a wonderful pair, with Dent being funny and warm, and Haugh being pristine in her chef's whites and demanding of excellence. They come from working-class families and have succeeded in male-dominated fields. Dent believes that 'tenacity, hard work' are key to success, while Haugh thinks that 'success is authenticity. It's being able to pay your bills, [but] it's not about somebody else telling you that you're great. You have to be able to acknowledge it yourself.'The new hosts are focused on celebrating culinary ambition and promoting opportunities in the hospitality industry. 'MasterChef opens that door,' says Haugh. 'Tons of people, whether they win the show or not, enter into hospitality because they entered MasterChef. Our industry really needs that.'MasterChef starts on Tuesday, April 21, on BBC One at 9 pm. Don't miss the new season with Dent and Haugh at the helm!

The Enduring Legacy of Mark Fisher: Cultural Theorist and Critic of Capitalism

The article explores the legacy of Mark Fisher, a cultural theorist who critiqued capitalism and it…
Mark Fisher, a renowned cultural theorist, left an indelible mark on modern thought with his critiques of capitalism and its pervasive influence on society. His book, Capitalist Realism: Is There No Alternative?, published in 2009, was initially met with silence from journalists and academics. However, it has since become a seminal work, selling over 250,000 English-language copies and being translated into numerous languages.Fisher's work was characterized by its accessibility and brutal honesty, earning him a following through his k-punk blog (2003-2016). He popularized the notion that “it’s easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism”, a concept attributed to Fredric Jameson. Fisher's writing covered a wide range of topics, including popular culture, work, mental health, and education, challenging the profit-driven economic system and reflecting on the feelings of hopelessness experienced by many.Konrad Kay, writer and co-creator of the finance drama series Industry, praises Fisher for documenting the subconscious human drives that underpin capitalism's immortality. Fisher's ideas continue to resonate, influencing artists such as Miki Aurora, who has explored his concepts of 'acid communism'.Fisher's philosophy of “hauntology” suggests that modern society is haunted by futures that failed to happen. This concept is explored in the documentary We Are Making a Film About Mark Fisher, which features archival recordings, interviews, and fictional performances. The film highlights Fisher's belief that artists have never been given the assets and opportunity to bring forth the new.The documentary has inspired a collective effort to undermine capitalism, with audience members organizing in-person group screenings worldwide. As the film concludes, “We are making a film about Mark Fisher and, now that you are watching, so are you.”

FIFA Faces Fan Backlash Over Unclear Tailgating Rules Ahead of 2026 World Cup in the United States

US supporters are protesting reports that FIFA has banned tailgating at World Cup venues, but the g…
Social media erupted this week after US media outlets reported that FIFA had prohibited tailgating at the 2026 World Cup stadiums. Fans quickly challenged the claim, pointing to FIFA’s own statement that it "does not have a formal policy that restricts tailgating".FIFA clarified that while there is no global ban, individual venues may impose restrictions in line with local public‑safety regulations. The organization added that detailed fan guidance will be released well before the tournament kicks off.In the United States, tailgating is a long‑standing pre‑match tradition where supporters park near the stadium, grill, drink and socialize for hours before kickoff. The practice, especially popular at NFL games, is considered an essential part of the American match‑day experience.American fans argue that banning the activity would strip away a cultural hallmark. One Philadelphia supporter wrote on X, "FIFA doesn’t understand that you physically cannot stop Philadelphians from tailgating." Others noted that international visitors often enjoy the festive atmosphere, citing videos from the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.Nevertheless, the Boston organising committee has already announced that tailgating "is not permitted for these events," highlighting the patchwork of local rules that could affect the World Cup.Security protocols for major tournaments require two concentric perimeters around each stadium: an outer ring focused on crowd safety and an inner ring for ticket verification. The exact placement of the outer perimeter depends on each venue’s layout, parking capacity and access routes, and it is designed to keep "unauthorised persons" away from the stadium building.Because FIFA cedes day‑of‑match security decisions to local organising committees, the final stance on tailgating will likely be decided by city officials and may not be disclosed until closer to the event. The United States will host 78 of the 104 matches across 10 venues, including the newly renamed Los Angeles Stadium (formerly SoFi Stadium) for the opening match and the New York‑New Jersey Stadium (formerly MetLife Stadium) for the final. Other sites are Boston’s Gillette Stadium, Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field, Dallas’s AT&T Stadium, Seattle’s Lumen Field, Kansas City’s Arrowhead Stadium, Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium, Atlanta’s Mercedes‑Benz Stadium, Houston’s NRG Stadium, and the San Francisco Bay Area’s Levi’s Stadium.Until local authorities release definitive guidelines, the fate of tailgating at the 2026 World Cup remains an open question, leaving fans to await clarification on whether their beloved pre‑game rituals will survive the tournament’s security framework.

Saudi Arabia's Sports Investment Shift: LIV Golf Faces Uncertainty

Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) is withdrawing financial support for LIV Golf, a move e…
The sports world is reeling from the news that Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) is pulling back its financial support for LIV Golf, a rebel tour that has been a key vehicle for the kingdom's ambitious attempts to become a leading global sports destination.Conservatively estimated to have cost Saudi Arabia over $10bn in the past five years, the slowdown in lavish spending on sport was expected, but the withdrawal of PIF's support has sent shockwaves throughout the industry. This move was first communicated to LIV executives on Monday, leaving many employees fearing for their jobs. The uncertainty is not limited to golf, with other sports administrators worried that similar cuts could be coming their way. LIV Golf's future is now in doubt, with the tour's chief executive, Scott O'Neil, failing to address the possibility of PIF's withdrawal in an email to staff on Wednesday evening.Sports executives outside golf have expressed concerns about the future, stating, 'We all went running to Saudi for a quick payday and are now wondering what the future holds.' The PIF's investment strategy now focuses on domestic benefits and building real businesses, with LIV Golf being seen as vulnerable due to its lack of profitability. The PIF's financial strategy for 2026-2030 emphasizes 'value realisation through performance, innovation, and private sector engagement.' While sport is not listed as one of PIF's six investment pillars, it will be included under the tourism, travel, and entertainment portfolio. The move towards privatization is evident, with PIF selling a 70% stake in Al-Hilal, one of its Saudi Pro League clubs, to a private company owned by Prince Al Waleed bin Talal Al Saud. Other sports, such as Esports, boxing, and mixed martial arts, are expected to continue receiving investment due to their popularity and potential for growth. The implications of PIF's shift in strategy extend beyond golf, with Newcastle United and other sports organizations potentially affected. As Saudi Arabia continues to invest heavily in certain sports, the future of others, like LIV Golf, remains uncertain.

Businessman Uses AI to Make False Statements to Shut Down London Nightclub

A London businessman has pleaded guilty to using AI to generate false statements in an attempt to s…
Aldo d’Aponte, 47, the CEO of Arbitrage Group Properties, has pleaded guilty to writing two letters, supposedly by his neighbours, objecting to the reopening of Heaven nightclub. Police believe the letters were generated using artificial intelligence (AI).The nightclub, a popular LGBTQ venue in central London, had its licence suspended in November 2024 after a 19-year-old woman accused a bouncer of rape. It was allowed to reopen with enhanced welfare and security policies after a council hearing held a month later. The security guard was later found not guilty of the alleged offence.During the council hearing, council officials received letters, sent via an encrypted email address, all of which were detailed in their complaints about the nightclub. An investigation by Philip Kolvin KC, a planning lawyer, found that the letters were likely written using AI and that the people who had apparently written the complaints did not appear to exist.Police traced the IP addresses linked to two of the letters to d’Aponte. He was given a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £26 victim surcharge. The use of AI to generate false statements is a growing issue, according to Metropolitan police. The case highlights the potential for AI to be misused in making false statements, and the importance of verifying the authenticity of complaints. There are two further live cases police are exploring regarding false representations written by AI.

Jessie Ware's Superbloom: A Disco-Pop Retrenchment

Jessie Ware's latest album, Superbloom, marks a return to her disco-pop roots, building on the success of her previous albums What's Your Pleasure? and That! Feels Good!. The album features a more straightforwardly retro sound, with lush orchestration and a focus on grownup pop.The album's sound is influenced by Table Manners, Ware's popular podcast co-hosted with her mother Lennie, which has attracted A-list guests like Margot Robbie and Paul McCartney. This crossover appeal is evident in tracks like Automatic, featuring a spoken-word appearance from Colman Domingo.Ware's songwriting and production are notable for their classiness and taste, with Superbloom showcasing her ability to craft great melodies and choruses. While the album may lack a standout hit like Free Yourself from her previous album, it is well-written and well-made, with a focus on disco-infused pop.The album's string arrangements are particularly noteworthy, avoiding glitterball cliches and instead evoking the ghost of Charles Stepney's psychedelic soul. Overall, Superbloom is a confident and well-crafted album that solidifies Ware's position as a leading figure in the disco-pop genre.

Roblox settles with Nevada for $12 million and rolls out comprehensive youth safety safeguards

Roblox will pay more than $12 million to Nevada and adopt new age‑verification, chat‑restriction, a…
Roblox, the popular gaming platform used by nearly half of U.S. children under 16, has entered a historic settlement with the state of Nevada, agreeing to contribute over $12 million and implement a suite of new safety measures for young users. Attorney General Aaron Ford described the deal as a "first‑of‑its‑kind" arrangement that will "create a safer environment for our children online" and could serve as a bellwether for how interactive platforms protect youth. Under the agreement, Roblox will allocate $10 million over three years to fund community programs such as the Boys & Girls Club and other non‑digital activities. The money will also support a law‑enforcement liaison role and an online‑safety awareness campaign. Key platform changes include mandatory age verification for all users, the introduction of facial age‑estimation technology, and the restriction of night‑time notifications for minors. Chat functions will be limited to peers of similar age, and communication with adults will be allowed only with a "trusted friend" added via QR code or phone contacts. Roblox will launch dedicated kids’ accounts for users under 16, blocking access to adult‑rated content and offering only vetted games. Parental oversight, previously limited to children under 13, will now extend to all users under 16. Matt Kaufman, Roblox’s chief safety officer, hailed the settlement as a "landmark agreement" that establishes a new standard for digital safety and provides a blueprint for collaboration between industry and regulators. The Nevada deal arrives amid a wave of litigation targeting social‑media giants for allegedly designing addictive experiences for children. Recent rulings in California and New Mexico forced companies like Meta and YouTube to pay more than $375 million in penalties for similar claims. Attorney General Ford is also pursuing actions against Meta, TikTok, Snapchat, YouTube, and Kik, alleging failures to implement adequate child‑safety measures. Donch’e King, a supervising criminal investigator with the Nevada AG’s office, warned that roughly 500,000 online predators are actively seeking children across platforms, emphasizing the importance of parental vigilance and prompt reporting of suspicious activity. "Protecting Nevada’s children is not an option. It’s our duty," King asserted, underscoring the broader societal stakes of the settlement.

Shares in eco-friendly shoe maker Allbirds experienced a dramatic surge of 582% after the company announced a sudden pivot to artificial intelligence and rebranding as 'NewBird AI'. The unexpected move sent the company's stock price soaring during a flurry of trading.Allbirds, known for its minimalist wool sneakers popular in Silicon Valley, had struggled in recent years, with its shares losing 99% of their worth since 2021. The company was once valued at $4 billion but had fallen into disrepair. Earlier this month, Allbirds announced plans for a $39 million sale to brand management firm American Exchange Company. The company's new focus will be on acquiring graphics processing units to support AI compute. Allbirds stated, “The rise of AI development and adoption has created unprecedented structural demand for specialized, high-performance compute that the market is struggling to meet. NewBird AI is being built to help close that gap.”Allbirds has secured $50 million in funding from an unnamed investor for its new AI operation, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The company will shift from its status as an eco-conscious public benefit corporation to a conventional corporation, with a reduced focus on environmental conservation.Despite its initial success, with sustainability central to its marketing and endorsements from celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio, Gwyneth Paltrow, Oprah Winfrey, and Barack Obama, Allbirds struggled to sustain momentum and largely fell out of fashion. The company closed its last physical stores in the US in January and reported a $20.3 million loss in the third quarter of last year.Allbirds is now awaiting shareholder approval for American Exchange Company’s purchase of the company in a vote next month. The sale will enable Allbirds “to pivot its business to AI compute infrastructure, with a long-term vision to become a fully integrated GPU-as-a-Service (GPUaaS) and AI-native cloud solutions provider.”
