Subdued Lebanon Liberation Day celebrations under new Israeli occupation

Lebanon's Liberation Day celebrations, marking the 2000 Israeli withdrawal, are subdued due to a ne…
The Shadow of Occupation Beirut, Lebanon – On May 25, 2000, the last Israeli troops withdrew from southern Lebanon, ending their 18-year occupation. This expulsion of Israeli forces by an armed movement led by Hezbollah has been a cause of national celebration in Lebanon ever since. However, this year, a new occupation in the south has dampened the mood. Conflicting Speeches on Liberation “Liberation Day is a sacred day for us,” Ali Saleh, 55, from Jwaya in southern Lebanon told Al Jazeera. “It is a holiday of victory, pride and dignity.” Saleh said he would spend this Liberation Day at the Camille Chamoun Stadium on the southern periphery of Beirut, where he has lived with his wife and son after being displaced in March, when Israeli forces again invaded the south. The Data of Displacement He is one of more than 1.2 million people in Lebanon who have been displaced from their homes, predominantly from south Lebanon and Beirut’s southern suburbs, since then. In the past two years, Lebanon has been invaded twice by Israel. In early 2025, more than two months after a ceasefire was agreed, the Israeli military withdrew from all but five points in south Lebanon. The Impact of Ongoing Violence Since March 2, Israel has killed 3,151 people in Lebanon, according to Lebanon’s Ministry of Public Health. US President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire on April 16, and extended into early July. That has eased attacks on Beirut and its suburbs, but the assault on the south has continued, killing paramedics and civilians. The Prediction of Uncertainty Under such conditions, many in Lebanon feel that this Liberation Day, which is usually marked with celebrations, comes at a sombre moment for the country. Saleh, the man from Jwaya, said he had hoped to see southern Lebanon liberated, and Lebanese citizens held in Israeli detention facilities released.

Régis Le Bris: The Quiet Architect of Sunderland's European Resurgence

Régis Le Bris has transformed Sunderland from a Championship club to Europa League qualification th…
The LeadOne of Régis Le Bris's first acts as Sunderland's head coach was to preside over a pre-season training camp near Alicante. It was July 2024 and, according to those present, the Breton sometimes cut a slightly isolated figure. "I arrived alone, without any collaborators," Le Bris has said, reflecting on his leap of faith that involved exchanging the familiarity of Lorient for a job that, initially, meant working with Sunderland's existing backroom team rather than bringing hand-picked assistants. The Strategic Transformation at WearsideThe coach who ended last season with a Championship playoff final victory and, a year to the day later, led Sunderland into the Europa League was playing a longer game. "Step by step I started to express my ideas and my concepts," Le Bris said. Slowly but surely he also began to establish a power base on Wearside.Le Bris went unrecognised when, shortly before taking charge at the Stadium of Light, he slipped into the back of a lecture room where Sunderland's club historian, Rob Mason, was recounting the team's sometimes illustrious past. But within six months Le Bris would be serving as a magnet, his unshowy pulling power attracting some of football's brightest emerging talents.Everything changed in January 2025. Sunderland's young, inexperienced side were pushing for automatic promotion and, unusually, the owner, Kyril Louis-Dreyfus, allowed Le Bris rather than the then sporting director, Kristjaan Speakman, to take the lead on pursuing a statement signing. The Recruitment Revolution and Financial InvestmentLe Bris had first coached Enzo Le Fée as a 12-year-old in Lorient's academy and knew the playmaker's recent transfer, to Roma, was not working out. With Le Fée receptive to a loan, Louis-Dreyfus and Speakman began talking to Florent Ghisolfi, then Roma's sporting director.Ghisolfi was gaining a reputation as a shrewd, well-connected recruitment specialist, with his work at Lens and Nice seen as highly impressive. What went under the radar was that Ghisolfi had worked with Le Bris at Lorient and had tried to lure him to Nice.Louis-Dreyfus and Ghisolfi bonded and the idea of the latter relocating to Wearside as football director no longer seemed ridiculous. Sure enough he arrived last July, partnering with Speakman to sign 15 players. Including Le Fée, whose assists would help to clinch promotion. The presence of Le Fée and Ghisolfi ensured that when Louis-Dreyfus called Granit Xhaka out of the blue at 11pm last summer as the Switzerland captain was preparing for bed, the midfielder did not immediately cut the call.If it helped that Louis-Dreyfus is Swiss-French and knew Xhaka slightly through mutual acquaintances in Basel, Xhaka needed a little more convincing. Not that it took long for him to decide that swapping Bayer Leverkusen for a club managed by a coach who reminded him of his old Arsenal boss, Arsène Wenger, and serious enough to have acquired Le Fée and Ghisolfi, was an exchange worth making.Sunderland's long-serving club captain Luke O'Nien – who joined back in the League One days and now helps Xhaka run the dressing room, takes up the story. "I always say Enzo was the catalyst for all this," the defender says. "He was the first top player to trust us as a club and he's made a big contribution to where we are today. Enzo works so hard, he's unbelievably humble and, as good a player as he is, he's an even better person."The same could be said of Xhaka. In a recent interview with the Guardian Le Fée said: "Granit's arrival changed everything." Significantly, Xhaka played a key role in persuading one of Sunderland's stars of this season, the former Paris Saint-Germain defender Nordi Mukiele, to join. The pair had played together at Leverkusen and Mukiele says: "When Granit speaks you have to hear with both ears."With last summer's Ghisolfi-inspired £155m investment in, among others, Robin Roefs, Noah Sadiki, Habib Diarra, Omar Alderete, Reinildo, Chemsdine Talbi and Brian Brobbey paying rich dividends, Sunderland reached Le Bris's pre-season target of 40 points with a win at Leeds in early March and finished seventh. The Power Restructuring and Club CultureIn February Speakman departed, amicably if not exactly willingly, as it became clear Ghisolfi's arrival had made a large part of his role redundant. Other high-profile executive exits followed, prompting erroneous suggestions Le Bris could be next. In reality the coach who arrived "without collaborators" had built an on- and off-field support network the envy of many Premier League peers. Now, a cerebral manager whose natural courtesy and gentle humour are said to conceal a capacity to be "utterly ruthless" when necessary, faces twin tasks. He must nurture his power base and a tightly-bonded dressing room amid the demands of playing European football on Thursday nights.Xhaka, though, harbours few fears. "As Sunderland's captain I can promise you that this is the just the beginning," he says. "We want more."Le Bris, sensibly, talks of the need to "stay humble" and remember the essential "fragility" of footballing success, but he is also justifiably proud. "This club is a special place in English football and our journey is really special because we feel the connection, the alignment with our fans," he says. "It's a really nice feeling."The European Challenge and Future ProspectsThe impeccably polite, quietly unassuming Frenchman who spent his first two weeks in charge of Sunderland unnoticed by fellow guests at a County Durham hotel, no longer walks alone on Wearside. Having transformed the club's fortunes from Championship contenders to Europa League participants, Le Bris now faces the challenge of maintaining momentum while navigating the complexities of European competition. The question for Sunderland and their supporters is whether this remarkable ascent represents a temporary resurgence or the dawn of a new era for the Wearside club. With Le Bris's methodical approach, the backing of owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus, and a squad increasingly filled with quality internationals, the foundations appear to be in place for sustained success at the highest level of English and European football.

George Russell Vows to Challenge Dominant Teammate Kimi Antonelli After Canadian GP Setback

George Russell retired from the Canadian Grand Prix after a battery failure while duelling with tea…
Russell's Determination After a Disheartening Canadian GPAfter a battery failure forced him out on lap 30 of the Canadian Grand Prix, George Russell declared he remains committed to battling his Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli for the World Championship. Despite the retirement, Russell emphasized that the "pressure’s off" and he will "enjoy every single race" while aiming to win each remaining event.Intense On‑Track Battle Ends in Mechanical FailureThe race at Gilles Villeneuve saw Russell and Antonelli swapping the lead repeatedly, trading paint and running side‑by‑side for the first 29 laps. Russell’s car shut down due to a battery issue, ending his run while Antonelli went on to claim victory and extend his championship lead.Championship Numbers: Antonelli’s 43‑Point Lead Over RussellLead Gap: Antonelli leads Russell by 43 points with 17 races remaining.Pole Positions: Russell secured pole for both the sprint and the Grand Prix in Canada, but Antonelli was only 0.06 seconds slower.Season Highlights: Russell won the opening Australian round; technical issues in China and a safety‑car timing in Japan cost him valuable points.Strategic Implications for Mercedes and the Title FightTeam principal Toto Wolff praised Russell’s resilience, noting it as a key character trait for the title battle. The close performance gap suggests that Mercedes must balance supporting both drivers while managing reliability concerns that could influence the championship outcome.Outlook: Russell’s Path Forward in the Remaining RoundsWith the season entering its final third, Russell’s experience and “nothing to lose” mindset could prove decisive. Upcoming circuits such as Miami, where he historically struggles, will test his adaptability, while Antonelli’s youthful aggression remains a variable factor. If Russell can avoid further mechanical setbacks and capitalize on his qualifying speed, the championship fight could tighten in the remaining meetings.

Andy Burnham's Route to Save Labour: A New Manifesto and Electoral Reform

Andy Burnham's potential victory in the Makerfield byelection could pave the way for Labour's reviv…
The Road to Redemption for Labour Andy Burnham's potential victory in the Makerfield byelection presents a second chance for Labour to start over. A leadership contest allows him and Wes Streeting to introduce new ideas that could transform the party's future. New Ideas and Policies Burnham and Streeting may introduce policies such as a land value tax, wealth tax, and a national care service. These ideas, previously restricted, could now be given the freedom to flourish. The Government's Response The government has also been active, with initiatives like Rachel Reeves's 'summer of fun' and efforts to improve relations with the EU and online protection for children. There are also plans to tackle the issue of young people not in education, employment, or training (Neets). The Challenge of Trust Despite these efforts, some voters may be skeptical due to broken promises from previous leadership contenders, including Keir Starmer. However, Burnham's commitment to electoral reform could change the dynamics of British politics. The Power of Electoral Reform Burnham's strong commitment to electoral reform, specifically proportional representation (PR), could prevent a situation where a party wins with a small minority of the vote. This change would require a new manifesto and could be a game-changer for British politics. The Path Forward If Burnham wins, he should quickly summon a national commission to select a PR system and call a prompt election to earn personal authenticity and authority. Writing a new manifesto would allow him to confirm his policies, including sticking to borrowing rules and outlining future relations with the EU.

England vs New Zealand: Deciding Women's T20 Match Underway in Hove

New Zealand won the toss and will bat first in the deciding third T20 match against England at Hove…
The Lead: Winner-Takes-All T20 Decider New Zealand and England are facing off in the third and deciding T20 match at Hove, with the White Ferns winning the toss and choosing to bat first on a sun-baked pitch. This match will determine the series winner after New Zealand narrowly won the previous encounter by 14 runs despite a shaky start. The Event Details: Toss Decision and Previous Match Context New Zealand captain Melie Kerr called the coin correctly and decided to have first use of the pitch. "We'll try and have a better start than last time," she said after her side were tottering at 11-4 in the previous match in Canterbury. Despite that poor start, New Zealand managed to win largely thanks to the experienced hands of Sophie Devine who made an assured 87 with support from a half-century scoring Maddy Green. An all-round bowling effort then restricted England's chase and saw them fall 14 runs short. The Impact Analysis: Series on the Line Today's match is winner-takes-all, adding significant pressure to both teams. The high stakes are evident in the preparation and decision-making, with New Zealand looking to build on their previous victory while England seeks to level the series. The match is being played in hot conditions with temperatures hovering around 31 degrees, which could impact player performance and strategy. The Prediction: What Happens Next With both teams evenly matched and the series on the line, this final T20 promises to be a closely contested affair. New Zealand will look to capitalize on their momentum from the previous victory, while England will be determined to bounce back and claim the series. The outcome of this match could have implications for future rankings and team confidence as both sides continue their preparations for upcoming international competitions.
