Practical Strategies to Cut Screen Time: Expert Tips from The Guardian

The Guardian outlines why smartphones are engineered for addiction and offers twelve realistic step…
The Lead: Why Reducing Screen Time Matters NowSmartphone use has become a pervasive habit, with platforms deliberately designed to keep users hooked. Recent court rulings against Meta and YouTube underscore the growing recognition of digital addiction as a public‑health issue, prompting a surge of practical advice for users seeking balance.Expert Evidence on Phone AddictionProf. Marcantonio Spada, emeritus professor of addictive behaviours at London South Bank University, compares phone use to substance addiction, highlighting intermittent reinforcement from notifications and videos. Psychotherapist Hilda Burke observes that excessive scrolling often leads to low mood, anxiety, and a “hangover” of wasted time.Financial Penalties for Tech PlatformsIn March 2026, a US court ordered Meta and YouTube to pay a combined $6 million for designing addictive platforms. The ruling signals that regulators may increasingly hold tech companies accountable for the mental‑health impacts of their design choices.Behavioral Impact of Screen OveruseSearch interest for “phone addiction” has risen steadily over the past decade in the UK.Users report disrupted sleep, reduced concentration, and strained relationships.Over‑monitoring tools can create anxiety, but modest alerts can serve as a wake‑up call.Understanding these patterns helps frame the need for concrete habit changes. The Roadmap for Sustainable Digital HabitsTrack your usage: Use built‑in tools like Android’s Digital Wellbeing or iOS Screen Time to see actual minutes spent.Schedule screen‑free periods: Start with short “wait training” intervals and expand to full days, as Burke does on Sundays.Change your lockscreen: Replace distracting icons with neutral images to reduce impulse checks.Set app limits: Impose daily caps on social media and entertainment apps.Create physical boundaries: Keep phones out of reach during meals, workouts, or bedtime.Replace scrolling with activities: Engage in reading, walking, or hobbies that provide intrinsic reward.By combining awareness, modest monitoring, and structured breaks, individuals can break the cycle of compulsive scrolling and improve overall wellbeing.

Delcy Rodriguez’s Indian Pilgrimage: Linking Venezuela’s Interim Presidency to Guru Sathya Sai Baba and Energy Ties

Interim President Delcy Rodriguez arrived in New Delhi for a five‑day visit, combining energy talks…
Delcy Rodriguez, Venezuela’s acting president after the alleged abduction of Nicolas Maduro, landed in India for the first time in her role. The itinerary blends high‑level energy negotiations with a personal visit to the hometown of her guru, Sathya Sai Baba, highlighting an unusual mix of diplomacy and devotion. The Energy Agenda Dominates the Five‑Day Diplomatic MissionIndia’s foreign ministry framed the visit as an effort to deepen an emerging energy partnership. Key discussion points included:Increasing Venezuelan crude shipments to meet India’s shortfall caused by the Iran‑Hormuz blockade.Exploring downstream cooperation with Reliance Industries, which can process ultra‑heavy Venezuelan oil.Broadening economic ties into mining, animal husbandry, transport, agricultural equipment and pharmaceuticals.Oil Trade Numbers Highlight Growing Venezuela‑India Energy PartnershipRecent data illustrate the rapid scaling of oil flows:Venezuela holds an estimated 303 billion barrels of oil reserves – roughly 17 % of global known resources, surpassing Saudi Arabia and the United States. In June 2026, shipments to India rose to about 417,000 barrels per day (bpd), up from 283,000 bpd in April.India’s total crude imports this month approached 5 million bpd, driven by the global supply crunch. These figures mark the first Venezuelan oil deliveries to India in nine months, following the lifting of a limited U.S. sanction regime that now permits select companies to buy directly from PDVSA.Political and Spiritual Links Reshape Bilateral RelationsThe visit also underscores a long‑standing personal connection between Venezuelan leaders and the Indian guru:Delcy Rodriguez has been a devotee of Sathya Sai Baba for years, regularly visiting his ashram in Puttaparthi, most recently in 2024.Former President Nicolas Maduro and his wife were photographed at the guru’s feet in 2005, and Maduro declared a national day of mourning when Baba died in 2011.The Sai Baba organization opened a centre in Caracas in 1974, running a “Human Values School” that promotes the guru’s teachings. These spiritual ties are now intersecting with strategic energy cooperation, offering India a stable, long‑term crude source while providing Venezuela a pathway to circumvent decades of sanctions.Outlook: How the Partnership May Evolve Amid Global Energy TurbulenceAnalysts anticipate several scenarios:If the Iran‑Hormuz blockade persists, India could further increase Venezuelan crude imports, cementing the partnership as a cornerstone of its energy security.Successful negotiations on downstream projects may attract additional Indian investment in Venezuelan refining and petrochemical assets.Continued political alignment, reinforced by shared spiritual narratives, could lead to broader cooperation in non‑energy sectors such as mining and pharmaceuticals. However, the durability of the alliance will depend on the stability of Venezuela’s domestic politics, the evolution of U.S. sanctions policy, and the resolution of the broader Middle‑East energy conflict.

Lovable Expands Google Cloud Deal to 5x Usage, Boosts AI Capabilities

Lovable, a Stockholm-based startup, has signed a multi-year deal with Google Cloud to increase its …
The Expanded Partnership Lovable and Google announced an expanded multi-year collaboration on Wednesday. Lovable, the fast-growing Stockholm vibe-coding startup, has long been a Google Cloud user. Under the new agreement, it will be a much bigger one. The Deal Details While the companies did not disclose the dollar figure, a person with knowledge of the deal tells TechCrunch it involves a fivefold increase in Lovable’s footprint on Google Cloud, including AI usage. As part of the deal, this individual tells us, Lovable will gain expanded access to both Anthropic’s Claude — the AI model widely used for coding tasks — and Google’s own Gemini models. The Financial Impact Google invested $10 billion in Anthropic in cash and compute credits in April, promising another $30 billion if Anthropic hits certain performance targets. Anthropic raised a staggering $65 billion round that valued the company at nearly $1 trillion. Lovable crossed $400 million in annualized revenue in February, having added $100 million in a single month with just 146 employees. The Strategic Implications The deal also plugs Lovable into several other parts of Google’s ecosystem. Lovable’s new agent will be available through Google Cloud’s enterprise agent marketplace, the Gemini Enterprise Agent Gallery — an arrangement the two companies first telegraphed at Google’s major U.S. cloud conference in April. And to help secure the code that both humans and agents write, Lovable will integrate with Wiz, Google’s biggest ever acquisition at $32 billion, which officially closed only in March. The Future Outlook By selling Lovable’s agents through Google’s marketplace, the cloud giant says enterprise procurement and billing will be simplified, making it easier for Lovable to land more enterprise customers. The calculus for Google is simple enough. If it can keep both Lovable and Anthropic growing by attracting deep-pocketed enterprises, the revenue helps fund the $180 billion to $190 billion in capital expenditures Google plans to spend this year.

iPhone 17e Review: Apple's Budget-Friendly Upgrade Delivers Premium Experience

Apple's iPhone 17e delivers a significant upgrade over its predecessor with a faster A19 chip, doub…
The Budget iPhone Gets a Premium UpgradeThe cheapest new iPhone has been upgraded for this year with a faster chip, double the storage, automatic portraits and MagSafe, providing even more of the core Apple smartphone experience for less. The iPhone 17e is an upgraded version of the mid-range "e" line launched last year and is the latest member of the iPhone 17 family, starting at £599 (€699/$599/A$999), undercutting the iPhone 17 and iPhone 16 by £200 and £100 respectively to be the cheapest new iPhone sold by Apple.Key Specifications and Design EvolutionThe new 17e maintains the same iPhone 14-like design with a large notch at the top of the screen and a 6.1in OLED screen. The aluminium sides feel great and the screen glass has been upgraded to the latest Ceramic Shield 2, which is tougher and includes an extremely effective anti-glare treatment that makes it a lot easier to see outdoors. The device also features MagSafe built into the back for magnetic accessories, such as Popsockets, wallets and chargers, which have been a key part of the iPhone experience since 2020.Screen: 6.1in Super Retina XDR (OLED) (460ppi)Processor: Apple A19 (4-core GPU)RAM: 8GBStorage: 256 or 512GBOperating system: iOS 26Camera: 48MP rear; 12MP front-facingConnectivity: 5G, wifi 6, NFC, Bluetooth 5.3, USB-C, Satellite and GNSSWater resistance: IP68 (6 metres for 30 mins)Dimensions: 146.7 x 71.5 x 7.8mmWeight: 170gPerformance and Battery Life AnalysisThe 17e features the A19 chip from the regular iPhone 17 but with one less GPU core, which reduces graphics performance slightly. Despite this, the phone remains very fast and capable of handling top-spec games. It also includes a decent 256GB of storage as standard, which should be sufficient space for most users with additional cloud backup options. The battery life is impressive, lasting approximately 52 hours between charges with general usage across 5G and wifi, meaning most users will need to charge it every other night.Market Positioning and Sustainability ImpactThe iPhone 17e lacks a few of the more advanced hardware features common to Apple's other phones, including wifi 7, Thread and Ultra Wideband (UWB). However, it maintains Apple's commitment to sustainability with more than 30% recycled material including aluminium, cobalt, copper, glass, gold, lithium, plastic, rare earth elements, steel, tin and tungsten. The battery should last in excess of 1,000 full-charge cycles with at least 80% of its original capacity, and can be replaced for £95. Out-of-warranty screen repairs cost £225, and the device was awarded seven out of ten for repairability by iFixit.Future Outlook for Apple's Budget LineupThe iPhone 17e represents Apple's continued strategy of making its ecosystem more accessible while maintaining premium quality standards. With this significant upgrade to the "e" line, Apple is likely to further solidify its position in the mid-range smartphone market, potentially attracting new users who might have previously considered Android alternatives. The inclusion of MagSafe and improved camera capabilities suggests Apple is gradually bringing more premium features to its more affordable models, potentially narrowing the gap between its budget and flagship offerings in future iterations.

Rugby League's Wembley Woes: Dwindling Crowds Threaten Historic Relationship

The Challenge Cup final at Wembley has seen dwindling crowds, with only 56,383 spectators attending…
The Challenge Cup's Wembley Conundrum The Challenge Cup final, a rugby league staple, has faced a concerning decline in attendance at Wembley. The recent match between Wigan Warriors and Hull KR drew only 56,383 spectators, the lowest figure since 1946, excluding COVID-affected years. Attendance Trends and Historical Context Historically, the Challenge Cup final has been a major event, with the first final at the new Wembley attracting 82,421 attendees. However, over the past decade, attendance has dwindled, with no match since then drawing over 70,000 spectators. Lowest attendance at Wembley Challenge Cup final since 1946 (excluding COVID years) 82,421 attendees at the first final at the new Wembley No Challenge Cup final has drawn over 70,000 spectators in the last decade The Financial and Cultural Impact The decline in attendance has significant implications for rugby league. The sport must weigh the benefits of maintaining its relationship with Wembley against the possibility of moving to a different venue. Wembley's prestige and London's proximity to rugby league's heartlands are factors to consider. Potential Solutions and Future Outlook Rugby league stakeholders, including Wigan CEO Kris Radlinski, emphasize the need for a collective effort to revitalize the Wembley experience. Potential solutions include: Rescheduling events like Magic Weekend to later in the summer to increase attendance Offering community clubs a weekend off to encourage more neutrals to attend Ensuring a sell-out crowd for the Challenge Cup final The Decision Ahead If a concerted effort to boost attendance and save the Wembley relationship does not materialize, rugby league may face a difficult decision about its future at the iconic stadium. The clock is ticking, with next year's final being the last under the current deal.

Running a Marathon in Your 50s: How Zombies, Run! Helped Me

A 56-year-old man shares his experience of running his first marathon with the help of the interact…
The Unlikely Motivation At 56, I am running my first marathon, an old, fat, bald dad surrounded by millennials in body-hugging Lycra and smiles that look AI-generated. But I am ahead of them. For they are only competing for positions and personal bests, and I am being chased by zombies. The Power of Zombies, Run! I started off accompanied by audiobooks, but when Ben Elton’s autobiography got a bit whiny, I remembered Zombies, Run! – an interactive running game for smartphones that came out years ago. That became my running companion. How the Game Works You start in the ruins of a shot-down chopper, with the voice in your ears trying to guide you to safety through the ranks of the undead. The interaction comes via short sections where you are told to run fast rather than lope. Overcoming Challenges Unfortunately, I spent the 90s playing football on hangovers and Red Bull without stretching once. My glutes and hamstrings give me constant pain after 10km, and the story is no longer enough to distract me. The Impact of Music Luckily, the best bit about Zombies, Run! is that you can link the game to a playlist on your phone, so you get a minute of narrative, then the music fades up for a bit before returning to the story. The Marathon Experience With Zombies on my back and banging tunes in the 170bpm range in my ears, I tore away, breaking my PB for 1km, 5km, 10km and half marathon as my band of apocalypse surviving chums and I investigated a weird ship and rescued a bunch of kids from an undead-strewn playground. The Unexpected Twist And then, at 15 out of 26 miles … my phone died. Suddenly, there was no distracting zombie story and no inspirational music. The Conclusion I got round. Eventually. But it was not Sonic the Hedgehog. It was more like Death Stranding, with your character carrying all of Swindon on his back.

The Climate Divide: Why Britain's Heatwave Response is Failing Disabled Communities

As record-breaking heatwaves become the new normal in the UK, a dangerous socio-economic divide is …
The Looming Public Health Crisis in a Warming UKAs the UK experiences unprecedented record-high May temperatures, a severe inequality is defining how citizens cope with extreme heat. While air conditioning (AC) adoption is surging among the wealthy and healthy, disabled and chronically ill individuals—who face the highest mortality risks during heatwaves—are being systematically priced out of life-saving cooling infrastructure. The Great Cooling DivideThe narrative around British summers has fundamentally shifted from a seasonal novelty to a survival challenge. While 4 million households now boast some form of AC, this statistic masks a grim reality. Affluent homeowners can afford tens of thousands of pounds for built-in cooling systems. In contrast, disabled individuals—who are disproportionately represented in lower-income brackets and rental markets—are left relying on inadequate fans or barred from modifying their rented properties. The ability to regulate body temperature during a heatwave has effectively become a luxury. The Stark Economics of Surviving Extreme HeatThe financial and physical toll of rising global temperatures is quantifiable and deeply alarming. The market is reacting to climate change by squeezing the most vulnerable:4 million: The number of UK households with AC, double the amount from just three years ago.17%: The surge in the cost of AC units in the UK over a single month due to spiking demand.4,500+: The number of excess deaths in Britain during the 2022 heatwave when temperatures exceeded 40C.Infrastructure Inequality and the VulnerableThis crisis extends far beyond private residences. Vulnerable populations residing in care homes, hospitals, schools, and prisons are entirely at the mercy of institutional budgets and government funding. Furthermore, minority ethnic groups and low-income families are disproportionately housed in urban developments prone to dangerous overheating. The current market-based approach to climate adaptation is creating a fatal two-tiered system where marginalized communities are left defenseless against environmental extremes. The Political Weaponization of Climate AdaptationLooking ahead, the failure to provide equitable climate adaptation will trigger not only a public health catastrophe but a severe political crisis. As the physical environment destabilizes, right-wing populists are already leveraging extreme weather to rile public anger against green legislation. Figures such as Nigel Farage and Tony Blair have begun attacking net-zero initiatives and heat pump subsidies. To prevent the political weaponization of the climate crisis, governments must urgently pivot toward systemic solutions: installing AC in public care facilities, creating municipal cool spaces, revolutionizing social housing design, and aggressively reducing emissions to treat the root cause of the warming.
