England Call Up 17-Year-Old Erica Meg Parkinson for World Cup Qualifiers

England's women's football team has made a surprise call-up for 17-year-old midfielder Erica Meg Parkinson for their World Cup qualifiers against Spain and Iceland in April. Parkinson, who plays for Portuguese side Valadares Gaia, has previously featured in the Lionesses pathway but will now join Sarina Wiegman's senior squad for the first time. The Singapore-born player was chosen due to midfield injuries to Ella Toone and Grace Clinton, with Wiegman describing Parkinson as a 'very dynamic midfielder who likes to go forward … aggressive, technical.' Parkinson was part of the under-23 squad for fixtures against Norway and the United States last year and will now take on a significant step up to the senior level. Wiegman noted that while it's a big leap, Parkinson gets the chance to show her capabilities at the senior level. The 23-player squad also sees the return of Arsenal forward Beth Mead after missing the last set of internationals with a hairline shin fracture. Manchester City's captain Alex Greenwood is back in the squad after sitting out recent games due to injury. The Lionesses face Spain at Wembley on April 14, before taking on Iceland in Reykjavik four days later. This match against Spain will be the first between the nations since the Euro 2025 final, where England became back-to-back European champions under Wiegman's management.

Ghana's head coach, Otto Addo, has been sacked by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) just 72 days before the start of the 2026 World Cup. The decision comes after a 2-1 defeat to Germany in Stuttgart, which marked Ghana's fourth consecutive friendly loss. The GFA announced the termination of Addo's contract, effective immediately, following a disappointing run of results that included a 5-1 loss to Austria and defeats to Japan and South Korea in November. He previously led Ghana at the 2022 World Cup, where they secured a notable 3-2 victory over South Korea but exited the tournament at the group stage after losses to Portugal and Uruguay.Ghana, preparing for their fifth World Cup appearance, are set to face England, Panama, and Croatia in Group L this summer, with their match against England scheduled for June 23.

France concluded their World Cup preparations with a convincing 3-1 friendly win over Colombia, highlighting their attacking firepower and squad depth. The match, played at the Washington Commanders' home stadium in Landover, Maryland, served as a crucial test for coach Didier Deschamps ahead of naming his World Cup squad in May.Desire Doue opened the scoring for France with a low drive that was deflected in by Colombia's Daniel Munoz after 30 minutes. Doue struck again on 56 minutes, assisted by Marcus Thuram, who had also scored earlier just before halftime. Thuram's goal came from a cross by Maghnes Akliouche.Colombia's Jaminton Campaz pulled a goal back, but France's dominance was evident as they controlled the game. Kylian Mbappe, a late substitute, was rested for much of the game due to a recent knee injury. Mbappe remains one goal shy of equalling France's all-time scoring record of 57 goals, currently held by Olivier Giroud.France's performance in this and the previous match against Brazil has shown a balance of style and efficiency, boosting their confidence ahead of the World Cup. Deschamps' team appears to be heading into the tournament with growing certainty.

Roy Hodgson, the veteran English football manager, has made a remarkable return to the sport at the age of 78. He has taken on an interim managerial role at Bristol City for the final seven games of the Championship season. Hodgson, who managed Crystal Palace until February 2024, was tempted out of retirement by Richard Scudamore, the former Premier League chief executive.Hodgson insists that he does not require a 'crutch' to manage the team, despite his advanced age. He believes that his general health is good, and he is probably fitter now than when he left Palace. Hodgson mentioned that he has been doing a lot of work at home, including using a gym and walking, which has helped him lose 5-6kg.The 78-year-old manager acknowledged that he must be cautious about the strains of the job, referencing the recent collapse of 80-year-old Romania head coach Mircea Lucescu. Hodgson joked that he has no intention of 'dying on the bench' like Jock Stein and will take necessary precautions to ensure his well-being.Hodgson's return to Bristol City comes 44 years after he was sacked by the club in 1982. He described his time at the club as a 'fond memory,' despite the financial difficulties they faced back then. Tottenham Close to Appointing Roberto De Zerbi as New Manager

Roberto De Zerbi is close to becoming Tottenham's new manager after further negotiations. He is the…
Tottenham Hotspur is on the verge of appointing Roberto De Zerbi as their new manager following productive talks on Monday. The Italian coach has emerged as the club's top choice to replace Igor Tudor, who left his interim position on Sunday after failing to improve the team's form.De Zerbi, who recently parted ways with Marseille, is now the only viable candidate for the role, with Spurs not engaging with other potential candidates. The club aims to secure his services on a long-term contract, believing he can help them stay in the Premier League and build for the next season. The potential appointment of De Zerbi could also impact Mauricio Pochettino's chances of returning to the club. Pochettino, currently managing the US national team, had been considered for an emotional return to Spurs in the summer, but De Zerbi's possible arrival might rule out that move.De Zerbi's backing of Mason Greenwood during his time at Marseille has raised concerns among some Tottenham supporter groups. Greenwood was charged with attempted rape and assault in 2022, although the case was later discontinued. Despite these concerns, Spurs seem willing to overlook them to secure De Zerbi's appointment. The situation at Tottenham is critical, with the team currently one point and one place above the relegation zone and having gone 13 league matches without a win – their worst run since the 1934-35 season. De Zerbi's task would be to turn the team's fortunes around and secure their Premier League status.

Rembrandt Masterpiece Reattributed: 'Old Man with a Gold Chain' Confirmed as Authentic

A portrait previously considered a workshop copy of Rembrandt's 'Old Man with a Gold Chain' has bee…
A leading Rembrandt scholar, Gary Schwartz, has concluded that a portrait titled 'Old Man with a Gold Chain' and dated to the early 1630s is, in fact, an authentic work by the 17th-century Dutch master. The painting, which has been on loan from Sir Francis Newman, a Cambridge-based entrepreneur, has been reunited with its counterpart at the Art Institute of Chicago. Each of the paintings depicts an older man wearing a gold chain and a plumed hat. For almost four centuries, the two portraits have been separated, with the Chicago version considered the undisputed original. The Newman portrait, slightly smaller and painted on canvas, was previously labelled as a 'copy' by an artist in Rembrandt's workshop. However, Schwartz's research suggests that both paintings are by Rembrandt. He argues that the quality of the brushwork and the practice of Dutch artists creating replicas of their own paintings support this conclusion. In 1699, a French contemporary of Rembrandt noted that it was common for Dutch artists to repeat their works.X-ray and infrared imaging of the Chicago picture revealed underdrawing and adjustments to the man's costume, which were absent from the Newman canvas. This led Schwartz to conclude that the Newman painting was not a workshop reproduction but an original work by Rembrandt. The Hamilton Kerr Institute at the University of Cambridge found that the UK version's canvas and colour pigments matched those used by Rembrandt and his studio. If confirmed as a Rembrandt, the painting will go to a museum, according to Newman.
