The Return of Price Controls: A New Era in Economic Policy?

The article discusses the growing trend of governments intervening in the economy to control prices…
The notion of governments controlling prices has long been considered taboo in modern economics. However, with the resurgence of inflation and its far-reaching consequences, this stance is beginning to shift. Politicians are now exploring the possibility of intervening in the market to regulate prices, a move that would have been deemed unthinkable just a few decades ago.The Austrian economist Friedrich Hayek had argued that governments lacked the necessary information to make informed decisions about prices, leading to inefficiencies in state-run economies. Nevertheless, as market economies have struggled to provide affordable essentials like energy and housing, interest in state-regulated prices has begun to grow.Examples from Mexico and Spain demonstrate the effectiveness of government intervention in controlling prices. In Mexico, the left-wing president Andrés Manuel López Obrador and his successor Claudia Sheinbaum have capped the prices of essential goods, while in Spain, the centre-left government of Pedro Sánchez has implemented a national rent freeze and energy price cap.In the UK, Zack Polanski of the Green party has advocated for a wider price reset, while Andy Burnham, a possible Labour leadership candidate, has also called for more state involvement in the economy to reduce prices. Burnham's experiences as mayor of Greater Manchester, where he has brought buses back under public control, have informed his arguments. The pressure for the UK to adopt similar measures is mounting, with a majority of British voters supporting nationalizations to get prices under control. As inflation continues to rise, it remains to be seen whether the UK government will follow the example of countries like Spain and Mexico.

RFU Review: England Rugby Coach Steve Borthwick's Future Hangs in the Balance

The Rugby Football Union (RFU) is reviewing England's disappointing Six Nations campaign, with coac…
The Rugby Football Union (RFU) has stopped short of fully backing Steve Borthwick as England's head coach for the upcoming Nations Championship fixtures. However, RFU CEO Bill Sweeney emphasized that their primary focus is on supporting the existing coaching team.Sweeney's comments suggest that Borthwick is likely to lead England in their summer Test matches against South Africa, Fiji, and Argentina, pending the outcome of a formal review into their disappointing Six Nations campaign. The review aims to identify areas for improvement and provide additional support to the coaching team.A key point of interest is the absence of discussions with Andy Farrell, the Ireland head coach, whose contract expires after the 2027 World Cup. Farrell has a strong track record, having led Ireland to two Six Nations titles and a successful Lions tour. Sweeney confirmed that there are 'no approaches' to Farrell and that their focus remains on supporting Borthwick. The RFU's review process is expected to conclude by the end of April. Potential changes or additions to Borthwick's backroom team are being considered, including the possibility of creating a new general manager role similar to that of Rassie Erasmus with South Africa.England's upcoming fixtures pose significant challenges, particularly against South Africa in Johannesburg. The team will also face logistical hurdles with matches against Fiji and Argentina, including a long travel schedule.

UConn's Sarah Strong Dominates College Basketball with Unassuming Style

UConn's Sarah Strong is making a significant impact in women's college basketball with her impressi…
Sarah Strong, the 6ft 2in UConn forward, is chasing her second championship in as many years with an undefeated squad that hasn’t lost in 52 games dating back to last year. As a freshman, Strong thrived defensively in the 2025 NCAA tournament, while scoring the most points by a freshman in tournament history with 114.In her second season, Strong has been even more dominant. Her impact on both sides of the ball is so deep that she was named the Big East Player of the Year and the Big East Defensive Player of the Year. She’s the favorite to win the National Player of the Year award next month. This season Strong averaged 18.4 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and 3.3 steals all while shooting 60.0% from the field. UConn coach Geno Auriemma praised her unique ability to play like a guard and play like a big guy.Unlike other collegiate women’s players with similar talent, such as Caitlin Clark, there is nothing flashy about Strong. She plays with certainty and lets her game do the talking. Her media commitments are increasing, but she remains uncomfortable with the spotlight.Strong’s poise, calm, and off-the-charts IQ have produced results impossible to ignore. Her parents, including former WNBA player Allison Feaster, instilled in her a respect for the game and family values.UConn assistant Jamelle Elliott quietly scouted Strong in ninth grade before the hype arrived and she became the country’s top recruit. Auriemma agreed with Elliott’s assessment, noting that Strong already had the skills that great players learn over time. With her star growing rapidly, Strong has inked NIL deals with Jordan Brand, Unrivaled, and Madison Reed. She had 18 points in each game as UConn rolled to first- and second-round wins last week, setting up Friday’s Sweet 16 matchup with North Carolina.

McLaren Aims to Turn F1 Season Around at Japanese Grand Prix

McLaren and Lando Norris are determined to improve their performance at the Japanese Grand Prix aft…
McLaren is looking to turn their disappointing start to the season around at the Japanese Grand Prix. The team, led by Lando Norris, has faced significant challenges with their new car, struggling to match the pace of Mercedes and Ferrari. After Mercedes dominated the opening two rounds, McLaren found themselves third fastest but a significant distance off the pace. The team acknowledged they had work to do on the aerodynamic side of the chassis and on understanding how best to exploit their new engines under the power management rules.Lando Norris remains optimistic about McLaren's chances, despite the difficult start. 'I believe we can get close but I also know how good Mercedes are,' he said. 'They've obviously got on the right track early and have understood the car better than we have been able to do.'Norris's teammate, Oscar Piastri, has shown promise in practice sessions, setting a strong pace in the afternoon session at Suzuka. The team is hopeful that they can capitalize on Ferrari's struggles with power deployment on the demanding figure-of-eight circuit. The Japanese Grand Prix represents another test for F1's new rules on energy recovery, which will play a key role in how the drivers approach a lap. Suzuka is a much-loved drivers' circuit that combines a requirement for inch-perfect judgment with a reward for pushing to the limit.

Tamerlano Opera Review: A Modern Twist on Handel's Classic

A review of the opera Tamerlano, featuring a modern twist on Handel's classic, with characters reim…
Tamerlano, a 1724 opera by Handel, has been reimagined in a modern production at the London Handel Festival. The story revolves around the despotic emperor Tamerlano, who has brought the stubborn Bajazet to his court in chains. Tamerlano's infatuation with Bajazet's daughter Asteria leads him to offer his betrothed, Irene, to the Greek prince Andronico. However, both Bajazet and Andronico threaten to end it all, while Asteria plots to assassinate Tamerlano. In an attempt to make the opera more accessible, director Orpha Phelan has aligned each character with a recognizable famous figure. Tamerlano is reimagined as Donald Trump, Andronico as Alexander the Great, and Irene as Elizabeth Bennet or a Bridgerton escapee. The production is billed as 'Social Experiment 2', manipulated by Andronico's friend Leone, played as Sigmund Freud.Despite the modern twist, the opera's musical standards are high, led by Laurence Cummings and the excellent Academy of Ancient Music. The cast, including Benjamin Hulett as Bajazet, Nardus Williams as Asteria, and Kitty Whately as Irene, copes admirably with Phelan's concept. However, James Laing's portrayal of Tamerlano is somewhat overwhelmed by excessive fidgety business, including eating Big Macs and doing the Trump dance. The production runs at Shoreditch Town Hall, London, until 28 March. Despite some reservations, the opera's vital element of danger is somewhat lost in the buffoonery. Nevertheless, it remains a fine cast and a resourceful set by Madeleine Boyd.

Adele Bertei's Memoir: A Vivid Portrait of New York's No Wave Scene

Adele Bertei's memoir, 'No New York', provides an essential slice of New York's bohemian history, particularly its no wave music scene in the late 1970s. Bertei, a relative unknown, brings a fresh perspective to the era, unencumbered by cultural baggage.Bertei's journey begins with her arrival in Manhattan in 1977, a city struggling with a municipal debt crisis and frequent fires. However, this period also saw a creative explosion, with the avant-garde art scene thriving post-Warhol. Bertei immerses herself in the alternative scene, crossing paths with future counter-culture icons like Joey Ramone and Alan Vega. Her writing vividly captures the era's spirit, describing the no wave music scene as "Dada brutalism" and a "negation of every way that had come before". As a member of the Contortions, Bertei experiences firsthand the challenging nature of the music, which was an expression of a darker collective reality. She also highlights the barriers faced by women and queers in the music industry, where sexism and homophobia were prevalent.Bertei's memoir is not without its challenges, as the focus shifts post-no wave, and she becomes a witness to subsequent cultural moments rather than a central figure. Despite this, her vivid and visceral account remains essential reading for anyone interested in alternative music. No New York: A Memoir of No Wave and the Women Who Shaped the Scene by Adele Bertei is published by Faber (£20).
