Lin Yu-ting Cleared to Compete in Boxing After Sex Eligibility Review

Olympic gold medal-winning boxer Lin Yu-ting of Taiwan has been cleared to return to competition at the Asian Boxing Championships following a review of her sex eligibility.World Boxing, the sport’s Olympic-level governing body, announced its decision before the Asian championships, which begin March 29 in Mongolia.Lin and Imane Khelif of Algeria won gold medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics amid international scrutiny and misconceptions over both boxers’ sex. While both met the eligibility rules followed at the time by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which ran the Paris tournament, the two fighters’ success led to a politically charged debate over those standards.World Boxing took over as the sport’s governing body last year, and it implemented a sex eligibility policy last August requiring all fighters to take a one-time genetic test designed to identify the presence of a Y chromosome.Lin has been absent from several international competitions since World Boxing introduced the test last summer.“We recognise that this has been a difficult period for the boxer and the CTBA and appreciate the way they have approached the appeal process and their acknowledgement of World Boxing’s requirement to ensure that its eligibility policy, which is designed to deliver safety and sporting integrity, has been correctly implemented and followed,” World Boxing secretary-general Tom Dielen said in a statement.Taiwan’s boxing association described the decision as a “tremendous relief” for Lin.“We are pleased that World Boxing’s independent medical experts thoroughly reviewed all evidence and confirmed that she has been female since birth,” it said in a statement.Lin “will make her highly anticipated return to the ring at the Asian Boxing Championships”, the statement said.

Japan Taps Emergency Oil Reserves Amid Iran-Israel Conflict

Japan has begun releasing oil from its emergency reserves as the global energy crisis worsens due t…
Japan has initiated the release of oil from its emergency reserves in response to the escalating global energy crisis triggered by the Iran-Israel conflict. The crisis has led to the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil supplies. The decision to release oil reserves was announced on Monday through a notice published in the Japanese government's official gazette. This move follows Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's announcement last week to unilaterally release 80 million barrels of oil from stockpiles due to supply concerns arising from Iran's threats against shipping in the strait. The International Energy Agency (IEA) has also pledged to coordinate the release of a record 400 million barrels to mitigate the market impact of the conflict. Despite these efforts, oil prices have surged, with Brent crude rising as much as 3% on Sunday before easing slightly on Monday. As of 05:45 GMT, Brent stood at $104.85 a barrel, marking a more than 40% increase since the start of the war on February 28.Japan, being one of the world's largest oil importers, relies on overseas fossil fuels for about 80% of its energy needs. The country also holds one of the world's largest oil reserves, sufficient to meet 254 days of domestic consumption. Tokyo has stated it has no plans to deploy its navy to the strait following a call from US President Donald Trump for other countries to help unblock the waterway.

Global Energy Crisis Worsens: IEA Head Warns of Worst Crisis Since 1970s Oil Shocks

The world is facing a severe energy crisis, worse than the 1970s oil shocks and the Ukraine war com…
The world is currently experiencing a severe energy crisis, surpassing the combined impact of the 1970s oil shocks and the Ukraine war, according to Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA). Speaking at a media event in Australia, Birol warned that the energy crunch prompted by the US-Israel war on Iran has exceeded the 1973 and 1979 oil shocks and gas shortages stemming from Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine.Birol stated that the crisis is equivalent to two oil crises and one gas crash combined. He noted that the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz and attacks on energy facilities have reduced global oil supplies by about 11 million barrels per day (bpd), more than double the combined shortfalls of the 1970s crises. Additionally, liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies have been reduced by about 140 billion cubic meters, compared to a shortfall of 75bcm in the aftermath of Ukraine's invasion by Russia. At least 40 energy facilities across nine countries have been severely damaged in the conflict, according to the IEA chief. Birol emphasized that the global economy is facing a major threat and expressed hope that the issue will be resolved soon.Birol also expressed concern that the scale of the crisis had not been fully understood, which prompted him to speak publicly about the situation. The IEA has proposed measures to reduce energy consumption, including facilitating remote working and carpooling, and lowering speed limits on motorways. The IEA chief is in consultation with different countries about releasing more strategic oil reserves if needed. However, he emphasized that the single most important solution to the crisis is to unblock the Strait of Hormuz, which usually carries about one-fifth of global oil and LNG supplies.

Israeli Settlers Unleash Violence on West Bank Towns for Second Consecutive Night

Israeli settlers launched a second night of rampages through West Bank towns and villages, injuring…
Israeli settlers carried out coordinated attacks on multiple towns and villages in the occupied West Bank for the second consecutive night, resulting in at least nine Palestinian injuries. The violence took place during the Eid al-Fitr holiday, marking the end of Ramadan. In one incident, a 45-year-old man was shot in the foot during a confrontation with Israeli settlers in Deir al-Hatab, east of Nablus. The Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) reported that a 47-year-old Palestinian man was attacked by settlers in Jabal al-Arma in Beita, while others were beaten. The attacks were widespread, with homes and cars set ablaze and property vandalized across the occupied West Bank. Simultaneous assaults occurred in at least six communities, including villages near Jenin and Nablus. The violence followed a funeral for 18-year-old Yehuda Sherman, an Israeli settler killed in a collision with a Palestinian vehicle. Israeli police are investigating claims that the collision was deliberate. The Israeli government's expansion of illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank has been met with international criticism. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reported that 25 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli settlers and soldiers so far this year.Amnesty International condemned the expansion of illegal settlements and state-backed settler violence, calling it a "direct indictment of the international community's catastrophic failure" to take action. The International Court of Justice ruled in 2024 that Israel's continued presence in the occupied Palestinian territory is unlawful and should end "as rapidly as possible".

Football Star Jorginho Sparks Social Media Firestorm Against Singer Chappell Roan

Footballer Jorginho publicly criticized singer Chappell Roan after claiming her security guard spok…
In an unexpected turn of events that captured social media attention over the weekend, footballer Jorginho found himself in a public dispute with American pop singer Chappell Roan. The former Chelsea and current Flamengo midfielder took to social media to accuse Roan's security guard of speaking "in an extremely aggressive manner" to his stepdaughter and wife at a São Paulo hotel.Jorginho, whose stepdaughter happens to be actress Jude Law's daughter, claimed that his stepdaughter had merely smiled at Roan while walking past the singer's table during breakfast. Without his fans, "you would be nothing," Jorginho stated in a departure from his typically less confrontational public persona. In response, Roan posted a video denying the allegations and clarifying that the security guard in question was not her personal security. The singer explained she was simply sitting at breakfast when the incident allegedly occurred and expressed regret if the mother and child felt uncomfortable. "I do not hate people who are fans of my music. I do not hate children – that is crazy," Roan stated in the video, which was recorded while she was lying in bed.The controversy quickly escalated when Eduardo Cavaliere, the mayor of Rio de Janeiro, announced a ban on Roan performing at the city's annual Todo Mundo festival. "As long as I'm in charge of our city – this young lady @ChappellRoan will never perform at Todo Mundo no Rio!" he declared, while simultaneously inviting Jorginho's stepdaughter as a guest of honor.Quote of the Day came from Pep Guardiola following Manchester City's recent triumph: "I wanted another yellow card, that was the target. If I cannot celebrate against that team with the way we are playing, then when? Emotions are related to the way we are playing. Give me another yellow card, I'm not yet artificial intelligence. I'm a human being and I want to celebrate."

The Video Game War: How Trump's Administration Is Framing the Conflict in Iran

The article discusses how the Trump administration is portraying the war in Iran as a video game, u…
The US conflict in Iran, with its wide-reaching consequences for the Middle East and global economy, is being portrayed by the Trump administration in a strikingly detached and simplistic manner. The war is being likened to a video game, a spectator sport, and a social media event, complete with memes and AI-generated content.A week into the conflict, the White House uploaded a series of social media clips featuring montages of popular movies like Top Gun, Braveheart, and Breaking Bad, with captions like 'Justice the American way.' Another clip, titled Touchdown, showed NFL players tackling each other, culminating in an explosion labeled 'unclassified.' Even SpongeBob SquarePants made an appearance, asking, 'Wanna see me do it again?' followed by an explosion.A senior White House official described their approach as 'grinding away on banger memes, dude,' highlighting an 'entertainment factor' in their strategy. This approach reflects Donald Trump's and his MAGA base's tendency to view politics as a competition, where scoring, winning, and humiliating the opponent are paramount. The conflict is thus framed not in terms of death, destruction, or economic fallout but as a game of scoring points. The use of AI in the conflict has been unprecedented, with Adm Brad Cooper, Centcom commander for Operation Epic Fury, noting that AI played a crucial role in the over 5,500 strikes on Iran. AI tools can accelerate processes that used to take hours or days into mere seconds, streamlining the 'kill chain' and reducing human involvement in target selection. This detachment is further exacerbated by the remote nature of the conflict and the current information ecosystem, where events are flattened into social media feeds, making it difficult to discern reality from fiction. The glut of information, including fake footage and AI-generated content, has dulled our sensitivity to the true stakes of the conflict. The article concludes with a call to retain empathy and humanity in the face of political leaders who benefit from dehumanizing conflict and platform owners who profit from it. The challenge is to understand the human cost of the war and exercise pressure on those responsible for the suffering.
