Orwell: 2+2=5 Documentary Review - A Portrait That Falls Short

A documentary about George Orwell and his enduring relevance, exploring his life, work, and the imp…
Raoul Peck's documentary about George Orwell and his enduring relevance takes as its keynote the heretical masterpiece Nineteen Eighty-Four and its famous scene about the state compelling people to believe whatever it says is the truth: that two and two make five. This Orwellian anti-arithmetic of tyranny has become a political meme often repeated in social media debates. The simple experience of hearing Orwell's prose, both from his published work and letters and diaries, read aloud by Damian Lewis, is invigorating and refreshing. There's an interesting emphasis on Orwell's physical frailty, with him effectively composing his masterwork in the shadow of death. Peck amusingly juxtaposes Orwell's sickness with Winston Smith being made to do exercises and the infatuation of tyrannical regimes with public displays of physical fitness.Peck cites various movie and TV adaptations of Nineteen Eighty-Four and includes footage of Jura, where Orwell went to live, and archive photo records of Orwell's childhood and early working life as a policeman in Burma. The film also shows how Orwell predicted the rise of AI in propaganda and in soulless bread-and-circuses for the masses. The film falls down in not focusing on actual theocracies of the present day and the Orwellian qualities of Isis and Hamas. The question of how far Orwell renounced his own earlier antisemitic tendencies is not entirely addressed in this film.Orwell was disliked by some on the left for daring to write Nineteen Eighty-Four and disliked still more with the revelation 30 years ago that in 1949 he had handed over to British authorities the names of 38 public figures he considered 'crypto-communists' – a fact from which this film averts its eyes. But Orwell's complications don't compromise his genius for truth-telling.

PSG's Ligue 1 Match Against Lens Postponed to Aid Champions League Preparation

The French league has postponed Paris Saint-Germain's match against Lens to May 13, giving PSG extr…
Paris Saint-Germain's highly anticipated visit to Lens in Ligue 1 has been postponed to May 13, allowing the team more time to focus on their upcoming Champions League quarter-final against Liverpool. The match, initially scheduled for April 11, could have significant implications for the Ligue 1 title race, with PSG currently leading Lens by a single point. The decision to reschedule the match has been met with some resistance from Lens, who expressed concerns that the French league is being treated as an adjustment variable to accommodate the European imperatives of certain teams. The Ligue de Football Professionnel justified the move by citing the strategic goal of helping France maintain its fifth place in the UEFA coefficient rankings, which would secure four places in the Champions League.PSG is set to face Liverpool in the Champions League quarter-final on April 8 at the Parc de Princes, with the second leg taking place at Anfield six days later. This extra time could prove crucial for PSG as they look to advance in the competition. In addition to the PSG-Lens match, Strasbourg's visit to Brest on April 12 has also been rescheduled to May 13, as Strasbourg prepares for their Europa Conference League last-eight games against Mainz.

Renowned violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter continues her dedication to contemporary music with a bold new series on Alpha Classics titled 'East Meets West'. This album brings together four works specifically written for her, reflecting the diverse heritages of the composers. The album opens with Aftab Darvishi's 'Likoo', a six-minute solo piece that evokes a folk poetry genre from Iran. Next is Unsuk Chin's 'Gran Cadenza', a nine-minute duo with Mutter and Chinese-American violinist Nancy Zhou, characterized by a high-wire performance. The textures expand as Mutter is joined by Ye-Eun Choi, Muriel Razavi, and Pablo Ferrández for Jörg Widmann's 'String Quartet No 6'. HBO Max Unveils Gripping British True-Crime Docudrama 'Boom Box: Beats and Betrayal'

The UK launch of HBO Max brings a British true-crime docudrama 'Boom Box: Beats and Betrayal', expl…
The UK launch of HBO Max has introduced a distinctly British true-crime docudrama, 'Boom Box: Beats and Betrayal', which tells the astonishing tale of a record shop and recording studio in Edmonton, north London. The studio, known as Boom Box, was initially set up to provide a safe space for teenagers involved in petty crime, but it unbeknownstingly became a hotbed of gang-related activity. The series reveals that the people these teenagers were getting involved with were not criminals, but undercover police officers who had targeted the area after a spate of murders in 2008. As the four episodes unfold, the ethics of the police operation are questioned by those who feel they were ensnared and manipulated to commit serious crimes they would never have thought about otherwise. The documentary uses dramatic reconstructions contrasted with interviews, and even features the actors who play the Boom Box teens talking to the actors who portray them. The studio was equipped with top-of-the-range equipment, which kids could use for just £15 an hour, giving it a 'Dr Dre vibe' according to one of the teens, Junior. The operation, which cost several hundred thousand pounds, raises questions about the fairness and impact of the police actions. While some officers argue they were making the operation look legitimate while pushing for information on existing criminal activity, others, including a lawyer for two of the men, argue that there was an abuse of process by the police.A judge later deemed the police actions lawful, but the series leaves viewers questioning the morality and effectiveness of the operation. The documentary is co-produced by Rogan Productions, known for diverse and ambitious documentaries, and is centered around the kids whose lives were forever altered by their time at Boom Box.The series is now available on HBO Max, offering a thought-provoking look into the complexities of the situation and the lasting impact on the individuals involved.

Marcelo Bielsa Seeks to Revive Uruguay's Fortunes in England Friendly

Uruguay manager Marcelo Bielsa returns to England for a friendly match against the host team, seeki…
Marcelo Bielsa, the charismatic and intense manager of Uruguay, returns to England for a friendly match against the host team on Friday. This visit comes four years after he left Leeds United, where he had a hugely successful stint, earning promotion to the Premier League and restoring the fanbase's faith in football. Bielsa's managerial style, known for its radicalism and emphasis on playing the right way, has been both admired and criticized. His teams are known for their high-intensity performances, but also for the physical and mental toll it takes on players. His departure from Leeds United was marked by a boom-bust pattern, where his teams initially perform well but eventually suffer from fatigue and decreased results. During his time at Leeds United, Bielsa was praised for his commitment to social responsibility, having players pick up litter to instill a sense of community and responsibility. His approach to football extends beyond the pitch, emphasizing the role of the sport in society. Uruguay's recent performances have been inconsistent, with a 5-1 friendly defeat to the USA in November 2023 being a significant low point. Luis Suárez, a key player, publicly criticized Bielsa, accusing him of isolating players and creating a culture of fear. Suárez's retirement from international football and subsequent comments have added to the uncertainty surrounding Bielsa's tenure. The upcoming friendly against England provides an opportunity for Bielsa to address these concerns and work towards restoring confidence in his team. Getting key players back in form, such as Darwin Núñez, who has not scored an international goal in 11 games, will be crucial. Bielsa's third World Cup may be his last chance to make a significant impact on the global tournament, and he will be looking to make a strong impression.

Everton Considers Legal Action Against Premier League Over Chelsea Sanctions

Everton is exploring legal options against the Premier League for not imposing sporting sanctions o…
Everton is considering a legal challenge against the Premier League for their handling of Chelsea's undisclosed payments sanction. The club feels aggrieved as they were docked eight points during the 2023-24 season for profit and sustainability regulations breaches, whereas Chelsea did not face sporting sanctions.Chelsea were fined £10.75m and given a suspended transfer ban by the Premier League last week after reporting £47.5m of hidden payments to agents and players made over a seven-year period. This punishment has been regarded as lenient by other top-flight clubs.Everton and Nottingham Forest are unhappy with the Chelsea sanction and are taking legal advice. They claim the Premier League has been inconsistent in applying its own rulebook. Everton could still receive a further punishment as a result of their PSR breaches. The Premier League is believed to have explained Chelsea's punishment on the grounds that they felt they would have been unable to secure a conviction without their co-operation, so negotiated from the outset. Chelsea's current ownership of Clearlake Capital and Todd Boehly reported the offences, which they discovered during the negotiations to buy the club from Roman Abramovich four years ago.
