Eagles of the Republic Review: A Seductive Thriller of Corruption in Post-Mubarak Egypt

Eagles of the Republic, directed by Tarik Saleh, is a seductive black-comic political thriller set …
The Lead Swedish-Egyptian film-maker Tarik Saleh has long been a brilliant satirist of the corruption and shabby political compromises and conspiracies of post-Mubarak Egypt. Now he brings us the third of his “Cairo trilogy”, after The Nile Hilton Incident in 2017 and Cairo Conspiracy in 2022. This new film is a seductive black-comic political thriller set in Egypt of the present day, showing us that everyone in the glamorous world of the movies, infatuated as they are with made-up stories acted out by narcissists believing in their own publicity, can so easily be pressed into the service of political propaganda. The Event Details The result is a rackety, despairing, funny film with something of Billy Wilder, or István Szabó’s Mephisto, or Bertolucci’s fascism parable The Conformist. For me, it also had echoes of Daniel Kehlmann’s novel The Director, about 1930s Austrian movie director GW Pabst, fatally tempted by the blandishments of Goebbels. Saleh’s lead is his longtime leading man Fares Fares, playing an ageing Egyptian movie star; this is pampered matinee idol George Fahmy, a man comfortable doing cheesy crowd-pleasing potboilers, now bullied into playing the lead in a sinister government-sponsored biopic of the president (with news footage of the current president, Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, cheekily cut in). The Character Analysis Fares’s gaunt, handsome face so eloquently conveys vanity, but also a poignant emotional woundedness, anxiety and self-pity. George is notionally a Coptic Christian, which has made him an object of suspicion for the government, though he is hardly pious, and is separated from his wife (Donia Massoud) and grownup son Ramy (Suhaib Nashwan). The Impact Analysis It is at one of these events that a general smoothly assures the company that western bigots, who wish to efface Arab achievements, are in a conspiracy to conceal the fact that William Shakespeare was from the Arabic world and his name was “Sheikh Zoupir” – which explains, he adds, why he disliked Jews. This is an unimprovable bit of satirical mischief in Saleh’s script. George flies high with his eagles before a horrible and sickening descent. The Prediction Eagles of the Republic is in UK and Irish cinemas from 22 May.

Marcia Hutchinson’s ‘The Mercy Step’ Earns Women’s Prize Shortlist Spot

Debut novelist Marcia Hutchinson secures a place on the 2026 Women’s prize for fiction shortlist wi…
The Lead: Hutchinson’s Debut Secures Women’s Prize ShortlistDebut author Marcia Hutchinson has been shortlisted for this year’s Women’s prize for fiction with her novel The Mercy Step, a raw yet witty portrayal of a young Black girl growing up in 1960s Bradford.Bradford’s Windrush Legacy Shapes the StoryHutchinson was born in late 1962 to Jamaican parents in Bradford, a city that welcomed thousands of Windrush migrants from 1948.The novel reflects the racism, hostile weather, and inadequate housing that many Caribbean families faced during post‑war reconstruction.Bradford’s mill‑town backdrop provides the socioeconomic pressure that fuels the narrative’s tension.Linguistic Fusion: Jamaican Patois Meets Yorkshire DialectThe author blends Jamaican patois, Yorkshire dialect, and a “Speaky‑Spokey” RP, creating a distinctive voice that mirrors Mercy’s mixed cultural identity. This linguistic collage is highlighted in a pull‑quote praising Hutchinson’s seamless mix of language.Abuse, Resilience, and Early Political AwakeningThrough Mercy’s eyes, the novel depicts domestic abuse, coercive control, and hospitalisation, yet it never sinks into despair. A pivotal moment occurs when Mercy and her classmates assert their Black identity, echoing the 1968 Olympic Black Power salute.Critical Reception and Prize ImplicationsShortlisted for the 2026 Women’s prize for fiction, positioning Hutchinson as a notable new voice in British literature.Published by Cassava Republic at a price of £10.99.Review notes occasional “odd similes” and “vignette‑like” sections but praises the tight timeframe and empowering conclusion.Future Outlook for HutchinsonWith the shortlist boost, Hutchinson is poised for greater visibility, potential translation deals, and a stronger platform to explore further stories rooted in the Windrush experience and Black British resilience.

Streeting Proposes Equal Tax on Income and Capital Gains in Labour Leadership Bid

Wes Streeting, former health secretary and Labour leadership contender, has proposed equalizing tax…
The Lead: Streeting's Tax Equality ProposalFormer health secretary Wes Streeting has set out plans for a "wealth tax that works" by equalizing tax rates on income and capital gains in his pitch for the Labour leadership. Streeting argues the current system unfairly penalizes work while rewarding asset ownership, contributing to widening wealth and opportunity gaps in the UK.The Policy Details: Equalizing Tax RatesStreeting's proposal would mean capital gains tax rates mirror the three bands of income tax: 20%, 40%, and 45%. A person's capital gains tax band would be calculated by combining their income and profits from assets. He used the example of a woman in Lancashire who paid a higher rate of tax on her salary than her landlord paid for the growing value of her rented house."The system is penalising work. It's not fair and it's bad for our economy. We need a wealth tax that works. A pound made from simply owning assets should not be taxed less than a pound made from a hard day's work," Streeting told the BBC's Political Thinking podcast. The Financial Impact: Potential Revenue and Economic EffectsStreeting estimates his plan could raise up to £12bn a year. A 2024 report by the Centre for the Analysis of Taxation estimated that changing capital gains tax could raise £14bn. The proposal includes measures to protect genuine entrepreneurs with lower capital gains tax rates for those taking risks building companies.Streeting argues there is "a good pro-business, pro-growth, pro-productivity argument" in his proposals because the current system encourages investment in less productive businesses. He also called for closing loopholes that allow people to disguise income from work as capital gains, such as setting up personal service companies or taking pay in shares. The Political Context: Labour Leadership and Party UnityStreeting, who quit the Cabinet last week and called on Keir Starmer to stand down, warned in his resignation speech that Labour must change course or risk handing Reform UK power. He has the support of 81 MPs needed to launch a leadership challenge but decided not to proceed after learning that Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham had found a seat to stand in."It was clear that if we had been plunged straight into a leadership contest by me or for that matter, anyone else, I think it would have been seen as a deliberate attempt to get ahead of Andy Burnham's potential return," Streeting explained. "And if there's one thing that we need to do coming out of a change in leadership, it is to bring the tribes of the Labour party together."The Future Outlook: Potential Policy Shift and Party DirectionStreeting's tax proposal represents a significant potential shift in Labour's economic policy direction if he becomes party leader. By positioning himself as both "pro-worker" and "pro-entrepreneurialism," he attempts to bridge traditional divides within the party. His emphasis on fairness in taxation comes amid growing public concern about wealth inequality and the perceived advantages of capital over labor in the current tax system. The proposal will likely face scrutiny from both economic conservatives who may argue it could discourage investment and progressive elements who may push for more aggressive wealth taxation. Streeting's ability to unite different factions of the Labour party around his economic vision will be crucial in determining the party's direction and electoral prospects.

Japan’s Historic Buddhist Hall with Eternal Flame Reduced to Ashes

A centuries‑old Buddhist hall that housed an uninterrupted "eternal flame" was engulfed by fire on …
Immediate Aftermath of the FireOn 21 May 2026, firefighters arrived at the Buddhist hall in Japan after locals reported thick smoke and flames. The fire was brought under control after several hours, but the hall was left in ruins, and the iconic eternal flame was extinguished. What Sparked the Blaze at the Eternal Flame HallPreliminary investigations suggest the fire may have originated from an electrical fault in the lighting system that sustains the flame. Authorities are reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses to confirm the cause.Financial and Cultural Losses EstimatedOfficial cost assessments have not yet been released. The hall attracted roughly 200,000 visitors annually, indicating a potential loss in tourism revenue.Experts warn that restoration of the wooden structure could run into tens of millions of yen, depending on the extent of damage.Implications for Japan’s Cultural Preservation PoliciesThe incident highlights vulnerabilities in the protection of heritage sites, especially those that rely on continuous rituals like the eternal flame. Conservation groups are urging the government to strengthen fire‑safety standards and allocate emergency funds for at‑risk locations.Future Steps for Rebuilding and Safeguarding Sacred SitesLocal authorities have pledged to rebuild the hall using traditional techniques while incorporating modern safety measures. A public consultation process is planned to involve community stakeholders in the design of a more resilient structure, and a temporary memorial will be installed to honor the lost heritage.

DR Congo Cancels World Cup Training Camp in Kinshasa Due to Ebola Outbreak

The Cancellation of DR Congo's World Cup Training Camp The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) football team have cancelled a three-day World Cup preparation training camp and a planned public farewell to fans in the capital, Kinshasa, because of an Ebola outbreak in the east of the country. Details of the Ebola Outbreak The outbreak of a rare type of Ebola known as Bundibugyo is thought to have killed more than 130 people and caused nearly 600 suspected cases. The World Health Organization has declared it a public health emergency of international concern. Impact on DR Congo's World Cup Preparations The team's pre-tournament preparations will now take place elsewhere after the cancellation of the Kinshasa training camp. DR Congo are scheduled to play World Cup warm-up games against Denmark in Liege, Belgium, on June 3, and Chile in southern Spain on June 9. Both matches are going ahead as planned, team spokesman Jerry Kalemo told The Associated Press on Wednesday. Future Plans and Precautions The American Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said this week that the US would ban the entry of all foreign nationals who had been in DRC, Uganda and South Sudan within the past three weeks. However, a US official said the Congolese World Cup team would not be affected by the CDC entry ban because they had been training in Europe for the past several weeks.

Taiwan's President Lai Open to Talks with Donald Trump

Taiwan's President William Lai Ching-te has expressed willingness to speak with US President Donald…
The Potential Breakthrough in US-Taiwan Relations Taiwan's President William Lai Ching-te has said he would be 'happy' to talk to United States President Donald Trump – a conversation that would break more than four decades of diplomatic protocol and risk angering China. The Diplomatic Implications US and Taiwanese presidents have not spoken directly since Washington shifted diplomatic recognition to Beijing from Taipei in 1979. China claims Taiwan as part of its territory and has never renounced the use of force to bring Taiwan under its control. The US Arms Package Sale Trump reiterated he would speak to Lai, dispelling initial speculation that his mention of Lai after his Beijing summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping was a verbal slip. The US is bound by the 1979 Taiwan Relations Act to provide Taiwan with the means to defend itself, despite a lack of formal diplomatic ties. The Future of US-Taiwan-China Relations Lai's government has been on the offensive of late, insisting that US policy on Taiwan has not changed and that Trump made no commitments to China on arms sales to the island. Taiwan relies heavily on US support to deter any potential Chinese attack. The Precedent Set by Trump In 2016, shortly after his first election victory, president-elect Trump accepted a phone call from then-Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen, angering Beijing, shocking diplomats, world leaders and China experts.

Aston Villa Ends 30-Year Drought with Europa League Glory

Aston Villa ended their 30-year trophy drought by securing a commanding 3-0 victory over Freiburg i…
The Historic Triumph in IstanbulAston Villa ended their 30-year trophy drought in style as spectacular goals from Youri Tielemans and Emiliano Buendia inspired a 3-0 win against Freiburg in the Europa League final in Istanbul. Unai Emery's side took the lead late in the first half through Tielemans' thunderous volley, before Buendia increased Villa's advantage with a sublime curler seconds from the half-time whistle. Morgan Rogers' second-half goal finished off the outclassed Germans, sealing Villa's first silverware since the 1996 League Cup and their first major European prize for 44 years.Emery's European MasterclassVilla's long-awaited continental conquest was the latest Europa League masterclass for Emery, who has now won the tournament five times after victories with Sevilla in 2014, 2015 and 2016, and Villarreal in 2021. Emery said this week that he did not feel like the "king" of the Europa League, but his team's coronation received the royal seal of approval from Villa fan Prince William, who was celebrating with about 20,000 ecstatic supporters at Besiktas Stadium. Hollywood actor Tom Hanks, another famous Villa fan, joined the party, sending a good luck message to the team before kickoff.Club Renaissance Under EmeryThe Europa League triumph underlined Villa's impressive renaissance since Emery took charge in October 2022, with the club languishing just three points above the relegation zone. Emery called on his players and the club's hierarchy to match his desire to keep Villa in contention for silverware. "I am myself ambitious and of course I need support. The owners, everyone that works in the club. Development is everything," he said. "The players are following us. We are doing it together. But we must try to set this ambition, being clear and realistic. As a team, ambitious and improving. This is our next step."From Relegation Contenders to European ChampionsIt has been a memorable finish to the campaign for Villa, who sealed qualification for next season's Champions League with a win against Liverpool last week. Villa's success over the last six days would have been impossible to imagine when they started the season with a run of six matches without a win, scoring just twice in that dismal streak. Their maiden win this season came in the Europa League against Bologna, the first of 13 victories in 15 games in the competition that culminated in their ruthless demolition of first-time European finalists Freiburg.A New Era for Villa FootballDespite losing in the UEFA Conference League semifinals in 2024, and the Champions League quarterfinals and FA Cup semifinals last year, Emery was convinced Villa would eventually cast off their "nearly men" tag. The 54-year-old Spaniard's unshakeable faith has been rewarded. "We are getting stronger, but we are trying to be demanding. Next year we will play in the Champions League, and the Premier League is the most difficult in the world. This is the challenge," Emery stated. "It's fantastic. Europe gave us a lot. For myself as well. I'm always very grateful for Europe. For every competition but especially the Europa League."
