'It's become something of a craze': Influencers spark French cheese shortage

A once-niche French cheese, cancoillotte, has suddenly surged in popularity thanks to social media …
The Rise of Cancoillotte: From Niche Product to Social Media SensationIn the village of Franois, eastern France, a stream of what looks like runny, beige gloop is being potted, packaged and dispatched for delivery as fast as it can be made. The freezer room, normally piled high with pallets of the product, is almost empty. This is cancoillotte - a cheese product that until recently was little known outside the eastern Franche-Comté region - and it's experiencing unprecedented demand. The Health Food Breakthrough: Why Cancoillotte Captured Influencers' AttentionUnlike most cheeses, cancoillotte is low in fat, high in protein, cheap and until recently something of a niche product outside the Franche-Comté, the region flanking France's border with Switzerland. This unique nutritional profile has made it a favorite among health and fitness influencers who want to enjoy cheese without compromising their dietary goals.Julie Morin, director of the Poitrey la Belle Étoile fromagerie near Besançon, and president of the Association for the Promotion of Cancoillotte, said the sudden demand had taken her and the region's 22 cancoillotte producers by surprise. "There's been a slow progression in sales of cancoillotte over the last seven years, but the influencers have produced a big boom, which we didn't expect," said Morin during a tour of the fromagerie established almost 150 years ago.The Economic Impact: Shortages and Production ChallengesThe boom in sales has resulted in what producers call a "rupture" in supplies - an unprecedented shortage of the product. "What with all the new enthusiasm for the cheese and the May bank holidays we couldn't produce as much as usual so we had a bit of a shortfall, but we're making it up," explained Morin. The sudden surge in demand has caught local producers off guard, with many struggling to scale up production quickly enough to meet the new market demand.Content creator Johan Papz, with 1.5 million followers on TikTok, called it "the best day" of his life when he tasted cancoillotte, adding: "My eating has changed forever." Influencer Itscindyoff has made 178 TikTok videos lauding cancoillotte and traveled 500km to the Franche-Comté to buy as many different flavors as possible.Regional Transformation: How Cancoillotte is Changing Franche-Comté's Food LandscapeFrance may be what Charles de Gaulle described as an ungovernable country of 246 kinds of cheese, but only one of them can claim to have won the hearts of fitness fanatics and social media influencers. This sudden popularity is transforming the local food industry in Franche-Comté, where cancoillotte has been produced for centuries. The cheese even has its own eating competition. Last year's winner, Maximilien Reverchon, put away 1.75kg at Larians-et-Munans in the Franche-Comté without the help of bread or biscuits. Such cultural recognition, combined with the social media buzz, is elevating cancoillotte from a regional specialty to a national phenomenon. The Future of Cancoillotte: Sustaining the MomentumUntil now, cancoillotte has been a product that was difficult to advertise. So we are surprised and happy it's become something of a craze and hoping it will last," said Morin. Local producers are now exploring ways to capitalize on this unexpected popularity while maintaining the traditional methods that give the cheese its unique character.Nicknamed "the glue" by some local people because of its sticky consistency, the history of cancoillotte is said to date from the middle ages in the Jura mountains. It went into production around the first world war when it became popular with soldiers on the frontline. This rich heritage, combined with its modern health credentials, positions cancoillotte for potential long-term success beyond its current social media moment.

Record Spring Heatwaves: UK Unprepared for Extreme Temperatures

Record-breaking spring temperatures across the UK and Europe highlight the country's unpreparedness…
The LeadTemperatures across the UK and Europe have shattered May heat records, with 30°C recorded in spring—a pattern that climate experts warn is becoming the new normal. In a recent podcast discussion, environment editor Fiona Harvey explores how the UK is unprepared for these extreme heat events that are increasingly occurring outside traditional summer months. The Podcast DiscussionIn their conversation, Fiona Harvey and Nosheen Iqbal analyze a report from the Climate Change Committee that warns the UK is unprepared for extreme heat—the new normal. The podcast format allows for a deeper exploration of the issues, with experts sharing insights on why we're experiencing unprecedented temperatures in spring months.Current Preparedness GapsThe UK infrastructure and housing were primarily designed for cooler temperatures, leaving the population vulnerable during heatwaves. Many buildings lack proper insulation, ventilation, and cooling systems, making them susceptible to overheating. This vulnerability is particularly concerning for vulnerable populations including the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing health conditions.Adaptation SolutionsThe podcast explores a range of possible solutions to help keep the country cool, from tree-planting to heat pumps and scaling up renewables. These solutions represent different approaches to addressing the heat crisis, from immediate cooling measures to long-term climate mitigation strategies.Future OutlookWithout significant intervention, the frequency and intensity of extreme heat events are expected to increase, placing greater strain on public health services, energy grids, and infrastructure. The coming years will likely see increased investment in climate adaptation measures, with a particular focus on making buildings more resilient to high temperatures. The transition to a more climate-resilient society will require coordinated efforts across government, industry, and communities.

Cuba's Isolation: Why Europe's Allies Have Abandoned It

Cuba faces desperate poverty and a crippling US blockade, but its traditional European allies have …
The Isolation of Cuba For many Europeans, Cuba was once a progressive cause, a plucky little country that had overthrown a corrupt regime and defended its independence against a US economic embargo. However, today Cubans are languishing in desperate poverty with little or no electricity, enduring a US blockade of fuel supplies ordered by Donald Trump. The US Blockade and Its Impact The US decision to indict Raúl Castro, Fidel's 94-year-old brother and successor, for murder shows how determined Washington is to eliminate the old guard. Factories and transportation are at a standstill for lack of power, and hospitals struggle to treat patients with scant fuel to keep emergency generators working. The Lack of Support from Europe Yet few beyond the hard-left fringes of European politics are protesting against the manifestly illegal strangulation of the Cuban economy and people. The world won't lift a finger to shield Cuba from Trump's deadly squeeze or to prevent regime change. Even indignation is in short supply. The Reasons Behind Europe's Abandonment This is partly because Cuba's traditional friends and allies – Russia, Venezuela, Mexico and Brazil – are either disabled, distracted or have bigger fish to fry with Washington. It is also because Cubans' plight is overwhelmingly due to their country's feckless rulers, who have done little to help their own people. The Future Outlook Whether Washington imposes a “deal” on Cuba's current leaders or tightens its noose in a bid to overthrow them, don’t expect Europe to do anything to stop the next episode in the “Donroe doctrine”. Europeans, too, have bigger fish to fry with Trump. They may have history with Cuba, but the US has geography and geopolitics on its side.

Dada Masilo's Hamlet Review: A Potent Dance Remix

A dance-theatre remix of Hamlet by Dada Masilo preserves few speeches, instead using movement to co…
The Remix of a Classic Words, words, words. Can Hamlet retain its tragic force without using most of them? This hour-long dance-theatre remix by the late South African choreographer Dada Masilo preserves few speeches and its opening is not auspicious, crashing straight into “To be, or not to be” shorn of context and characterisation. The Dance of Ophelia and Hamlet There follows, as is customary, a meeting between the prince and Ophelia, but Masilo replaces the usual cruel encounter with stolen moments amid a ceremony, as if they are meeting anew like Romeo and Juliet at the Capulet ball. Matching each other’s movements, amid clapped hands, thrusting shoulders and rippling chests, they grow closer with a hint of tango footwork. From this flashback, Masilo practically fast-forwards their choreography with a sense of doom. The Emotional Depth of Gertrude Letting the pair share a tender duet reinforces their romance but also heightens the violence of the nunnery scene where they are traditionally first seen together. Masilo adds another new scene to show Gertrude’s despair upon receiving news of Old Hamlet’s death rather than introducing her as sanguinely remarried to his brother. We see her seek strength amid grief, supported by courtiers whose pulsing, grounded movement is a message of persistence. This is dancing felt in the gut. The Impact of Movement and Music Wooed offstage, Gertrude returns for a convivial ceremony where a young couple are ticked off for getting too raunchy on the dancefloor. Movement styles across generations and cultures are blended by Masilo, who drew attention for remoulding ballet’s classics. Her ensemble is often an industrious force, driven by relentless percussion, as each scene breaks like a wave against Thuthuka Sibisi’s compositions. The Tragic Conclusion The latter stages lose focus but the choreography’s omnipresent sense of returning to the earth foreshadows a climax where all are struck down by the kingdom’s collective sickness, stressed by the lighting of Suzette le Sueur (who also provides some of the elegant costumes). It’s a collection of often piercing scenes that never quite establish full collective power – a tragedy out of joint. At Sadler’s Wells, London, until 26 May

White House Proposes Mandatory NDAs for All Federal Employees

The Office of Personnel Management has drafted a rule that would force every federal worker to sign…
The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) released a draft directive that would require all current and former federal employees to sign a non‑disclosure agreement (NDA) before speaking to the press, signaling a new wave of information control from the Donald Trump White House.Proposed NDA Directive Unveiled by OPMThe guideline, announced on Tuesday, states that violations could trigger legal action by the White House. It expands the definition of “confidential” beyond traditional intelligence classifications to cover internal agency operations, personnel matters, procurement processes and any pre‑decisional material not publicly available.Timeline and Procedural Numbers Behind the Rule30‑day public comment period once the rule is published in the Federal Register.Implementation timeline not specified; individual agencies must opt‑in.Agreements would also bind former employees who have signed the NDA.OPM spokesperson McLaurine Pinover framed the move as a response to “unauthorized disclosures” disrupting agency work.Potential Ripple Effects on Government Transparency and Whistleblower ProtectionsCritics argue the blanket NDA could “kneecap” whistleblower safeguards and undermine the First Amendment. The Freedom of the Press Foundation’s Lauren Harper called the policy “dangerously secretive.”Existing federal law already protects employees who report fraud, abuse or misconduct to internal watchdogs or Congress; the draft claims the NDA would not apply to those disclosures.Past White House actions include banning the Associated Press from the press pool and restricting Pentagon media access, moves previously ruled unconstitutional. What Legal and Political Battles May FollowPotential lawsuits from media organizations and civil‑rights groups challenging the rule’s constitutionality.Congressional hearings could pressure the administration to revise or withdraw the directive.Judicial injunctions may arise, similar to prior rulings against White House media restrictions. If upheld, the NDA could set a precedent for broader governmental control over public information.

The Shadow of Conflict: How the War Redefined Eid Celebrations in Lebanon

The ongoing conflict in Lebanon has fundamentally altered the traditional observance of Eid, transf…
The Shift in Eid TraditionsTraditionally, Eid al-Fitr in Lebanon is a vibrant celebration featuring family gatherings, elaborate feasts, and visits to mosques. However, the current geopolitical climate has forced a drastic pivot. Instead of traditional prayers in open spaces, many worshippers are gathering in underground shelters or makeshift prayer rooms to avoid aerial threats. The customary visits to relatives have been replaced by a focus on immediate family units, often confined to a single room due to the destruction of homes. The Human Cost of CelebrationThe economic and physical toll of the war has stripped the holiday of its festive elements. The traditional "Eid breakfast" or "Eid lunch" has been reduced to rationed meals, with many unable to afford the usual abundance. Furthermore, the displacement of millions has meant that Eid is no longer a time of return to one's roots, but a moment of uncertainty regarding where one will sleep that night. The joy of the holiday is overshadowed by the collective trauma of the population.Resilience Amidst AdversityDespite the grim circumstances, the Lebanese people continue to observe the religious significance of Eid. The spirit of the holiday has shifted from hedonism to solidarity. Communities are finding ways to maintain a sense of normalcy, often through digital connections or small, private acts of charity. The war has not erased the holiday, but it has forced a maturation of the cultural experience, prioritizing spiritual connection over material celebration.

EU Trade War: Commissioners Meet to Tackle 'China Shock 2.0'

Facing a surge of cheap Chinese imports dubbed 'China Shock 2.0,' EU commissioners are convening to…
The EU's Strategic Pivot on ChinaEU commissioners are convening this Friday for high-stakes talks aimed at imposing new restrictions on imports from China. The meeting is driven by growing concern that Beijing's industrial overproduction is fueling conditions for US-style rust belt towns across Europe, effectively creating a 'China Shock 2.0' that mirrors the economic disruption seen in the US a quarter-century ago. Addressing 'China Shock 2.0'The scope of the crisis is unprecedented, with commissioners from all 27 member states reviewing portfolios ranging from trade and agriculture to defense, health, and digital initiatives. While no final decisions are expected on Friday, the gathering serves as a critical alignment exercise to address the systemic overproduction in China that is flooding the European market. The Economics of ProtectionismThe core issue driving these talks is the severe price disparity between local and imported goods. Sources indicate that Chinese imports are entering the EU at a cost sometimes up to 40% cheaper than locally produced alternatives. This price gap is forcing EU factories to cannibalize their own domestic market, a trend industry leaders warned earlier this month would undermine European manufacturing. Defensive Measures and Future LegislationTo counter this economic pressure, the EU is exploring a range of protective tools. Experts suggest that quotas and tariff rate quotas could be introduced as faster alternatives to traditional tariffs, specifically targeting sectors like hybrid cars and chemical components. Additionally, the EU is considering utilizing its never-before-used anti-coercion instrument and legislation such as the cybersecurity act 2.0 to block the procurement of specific Chinese products. A Calculated Response to BeijingLooking ahead, the EU faces a delicate balancing act. While experts like Ignacio García Bercero argue the bloc must show it is prepared to act tough, they also emphasize the necessity of maintaining engagement with China to ensure mutual respect. With China viewing market access to the EU as existential, analysts predict Beijing will fight back hard against any restrictions, potentially leading to retaliatory measures that the EU must be prepared to weather.
