The five-star JW Marriott has become the nerve center of Washington's efforts to steer a country some now call a US protectorate – and which Trump has even said he hopes to turn into the 51st state.The New American EmbassySince Trump's decision to snatch Maduro in January and reboot relations with his successors, the JW Marriott has effectively become the US embassy in Venezuela. "It's [effectively] the US embassy. I don't think anybody's going to work at the actual embassy," said Phil Gunson, a Caracas-based political analyst for Crisis Group.Having been closed for seven years since the collapse of diplomatic relations in 2019, "the embassy building is full of rats and cockroaches, and it's being fumigated," Gunson explained. The conversations that can be overheard in the JW Marriott's restaurant offer a fascinating insight into Venezuela's plight as it emerges from nearly 13 years of economic mayhem and authoritarian rule under Maduro.The Corporate TakeoverIf the $250-300-a-night JW Marriott – or "the spooks hotel" as some journalists call it – is the HQ of the US presence in Venezuela, it is at another luxury hotel a few miles away where many of the big-money deals are being done. Since Maduro's downfall, foreign tycoons have been flocking to the Cayena, where rooms cost about $600 a night, wagering that even if interim president Delcy Rodríguez stays in power and there is no transition to democracy, Venezuela's economic future looks bright.One deal-maker who has spent time there recalled encountering at least four foreign billionaires they could identify – but believed there were others whose names they did not know. "They never give you a card. They don't give you their last names … and what is very interesting to me is that they are all asking about the same things: mining and privatizations," they said.Venezuelan ResistanceThe Trumpian takeover has generated widespread discomfort, even among patriotic members of Venezuela's elites who were glad to see the back of Maduro but privately bristle at the suggestion that their country is being turned into a US colony. After giving Rodríguez his blessing in January, Trump warned she would face an even worse fate than Maduro if she failed to toe the US line.On the streets there is anger too. During a Workers' Day rally on 1 May, a socialist economist called Oswaldo Pacheco marched towards a line of riot police wielding a white banner denouncing the government's "neocolonial collaboration" with Trump. "It's a complete capitulation," complained Pacheco, 53, accusing Venezuela's new rulers of following US orders "to the letter". "Clearly these [US] demands are not about bringing us democracy but about plundering our resources and increasing worker exploitation," he said.The Future of a ProtectorateAcross the street sits the Juan Sebastian Bar, a jazz and salsa nightclub named after Johann Sebastian Bach, where foreign visitors can let off steam. Throughout the day, English-speaking officials and fortune hunters can be seen roaming the 17-floor redbrick building, which has nearly 300 rooms, a gym and a palm-flanked pool. Bullet-proof SUVs wait outside to ferry guests, who include Trump's top diplomat to Venezuela, John Barrett, around town.Among Caracas-bound capitalists the mood is buoyant, even if huge doubts remain over Venezuela's future and, above all, its democracy. At a third luxury hotel, the Renaissance, a Venezuelan oil man waxed lyrical about his country's post-Maduro prospects. "This is going to be the best country in the world," he predicted, declaring: "I'm more than optimistic."

This week's new release Finding Emily is the starkest example to date, introducing psychology student Emily (Angourie Rice), whose desperation to find a good case study for her dissertation essay on the self-destructive nature of love leads her to concoct a machiavellian scheme to paint university student Owen (Spike Fearn) as an obsessive stalker.Owen is a kind-hearted employee of her university's student union bar, only meeting Emily after his search to find a different Emily he danced with the previous night leads him in the wrong direction. After she sees him plant posters around the campus, Rice's Emily decides to help him as fuel for coursework she should have handed in already, faking his signature on consent forms, secretly recording their every conversation, and insisting he make grand public gestures that paint him in a bad light. With this being a romantic comedy, certain tropes must be adhered to and feelings gradually form between the two, but the initial lie has cast such a destructive shadow over Owen's life that it doesn't feel triumphant for the audience when he realises it was more than just a friend who betrayed him.Red Flags and Deception in Recent RomcomsLast month, audiences were treated to another romcom sociopath in Halle Bailey's Anna Montgomery, the heroine of the frothy You, Me & Tuscany. A house-sitter who lives vicariously through her clients and imagines their lives as her own, we're introduced to her getting fired after getting caught wearing clothes that don't belong to her – which yes, does include underwear. After a one-night stand with a handsome Italian man, she saves photos of his glamorous Tuscan villa and flies to Europe to squat there, justifying her presence to his family by pretending she is his new fiancee. It's red flag after red flag in a haphazard scheme to maintain a life of luxury on someone else's dime, and the fact she successfully wins over another new interest during this ruse is less shocking than the Italian family forgiving her because they found her that charming.This trope of a relationship built on a lie was very deliberately weaponised in Kristoffer Borgli's hit black comedy The Drama, which juxtaposes one mundane white lie – Charlie (Robert Pattinson) pretending to have read a book he sees Emma (Zendaya) reading so he could talk to her – with her choice to conceal from him the worst thing she's ever done. The genius of The Drama isn't just that Emma is far less of a sociopath than many of those judging her for her teenage planning of a crime she didn't go through with, but that it exposes why modern romantic comedies are making their love interests far more extreme. These are characters who likely would have swiped left on each other if they didn't meet in the real world due to lack of immediate shared interests, with Charlie's planned wedding speech notably lacking any specificity about his wife-to-be.The Digital Dating Disconnect in Modern RomanceThe concept of a real-life meet-cute is growing increasingly alien in a world where more relationships are beginning online, and many reports point towards gen Z opting out of the dating market altogether. The revival of romcoms aimed at millennial and gen-Z audiences coincides with a need to reflect this sea change in how young people approach relationships, which is why we're starting to see an influx of stories that feel more like cautionary tales than traditional examples of the genre. We're still a world away from a horror movie subversion of the meet-cute such as the thriller Fresh, where Daisy Edgar-Jones unwittingly locked eyes with cannibal Sebastian Stan in a grocery store, but film-makers in both genres seem keenly aware that the digital world provides barriers to dating nightmares like these. Neither can function as well if you get to know somebody first and block them before any carnage can ensue.There are, of course, plenty of horror stories about online dating to be told; there's a cottage industry of true crime documentaries such as The Tinder Swindler which revel in the horrors that could be inflicted upon you if you swipe right. The modern romcom remains stubbornly offline in comparison, largely because the love interests it presents wouldn't be reflected well in a dating app bio. In a world where the most viral social posts about dating are from young people outlining their specific "icks" in potential partners, most of this new crop of romcom couples wouldn't sustain a Bumble conversation if they had a better handle on each other's personalities.The Future of Romantic StorytellingWith younger people remaining cynical about love and romcoms struggling to justify classic tropes in an online-driven dating world, these won't be the last films in a wave that feels more harrowing than idealistic. As our dating lives become increasingly filtered through digital interfaces, the romantic comedy genre may need to evolve further to maintain relevance, potentially exploring how relationships can form authentically in a world where first impressions are increasingly curated and deception is just a swipe away.

Her body is fragile here in this hospital mirror, yet her gaze is anything but. It looks us dead in the eye as if to say: I matter, this matters – a sureness that challenges the notion of subjugation in times of ill-health.The Art of Bodily AutonomyEven now, six years after her life-saving surgery, Emin refuses to conform to what may, or may not, make us feel comfortable when it comes to her post-operative body. As well as losing her bladder, Emin also lost her uterus, ovaries, lymph nodes, part of her colon, her urethra and part of her vagina. And yet she has found a striking autonomy in documenting the changes in her body. "This is mine, I own it," she affirmed in an interview not long after her surgery.The Personal Becomes PoliticalWould I have taken these photographs if it wasn't for Emin? Probably not. In the weeks that led up to my own life-saving surgery, I became increasingly fixated on the ways in which her no-holds-barred Polaroids, like the squares of her autobiographical blankets, were urging us to look at her in ways that perhaps we'd rather not. Twenty-seven years after her sculptural work My Bed catapulted her to tabloid fame in the late 1990s, Emin is still challenging us to acknowledge the things we tend to pull away from. Only these days her bleeding nudes are centred squarely on the presence of non-visible disability and what Harry Weller, creative director of Emin's studio, calls "her wild scramble for existence".Challenging the "Confessional" Label"Back in the 90s, people used to say it was confessional art," Emin recently mused to Maria Balshaw, director of the Tate. Only it wasn't. "I wasn't confessing anything at all to anybody," she corrected her past critics – and maybe even her present fans. I thought of Emin's vital reframe only a few weeks ago when I visited her landmark show at Tate Modern and contemplated her 2023 painting, I watched Myself die and come alive. In it, her red-swabbed body is splayed out on a table, she is watched over by the black cloak of death, and her mother's ashes are resting in a casket behind her bloody hair. Like most of Emin's artworks, this painting isn't asking for a certain kind of gaze from us – it exists for itself alone, and that's what makes it so corporeally present.The Legacy of Frida KahloCall it visceral, call it personal. But, like Emin, I too struggle with the word "confessional" in relation to women's expression of their experiences. The implication being that there is something guilt-inducing and therefore even shameful about a woman drawing attention to herself both in her life and art. As if by doing so, she needs to beg pardon for it. Only Emin has never subscribed to this falsehood. Come to think of it, neither did Frida Kahlo over the course of her all-too-short life (Kahlo died when she was only 47) – another autobiographical artist whose retrospective is set to appear at Tate Modern next month.Transforming Trauma into TranscendenceWith an anatomical eye on her wounds, Kahlo would redraw what she called her "body's landscape" on her own terms, making her disabilities into something transcendental, a devotional act that helped her transform the mundanity of her physical limitations into something extraordinary. As Kahlo's biographer Hayden Herrera remarked in 1983, Kahlo's art has a particular intensity and strength "that can hold the viewer in an uncomfortably tight grip". We can see this for ourselves in her 1944 artwork, The Broken Column: a valiant self-portrait of chronic pain that evokes the Saint Sebastian paintings of the Christian faith.
