Internal documents acknowledge this is inconsistent with its climate pledges.The Scale of BHP's Environmental ImpactBHP is famously known as the Big Australian – a reflection of its success and scale since its origins mining silver and lead in Broken Hill 140 years ago. It remains at or near the top of lists of the country's most profitable companies.But it is also a historic, global-scale polluter, mostly thanks to its mining of coal. Its extraction of that dirty fuel means it has been in the upper echelon of corporate emitters since industrialisation.The thinktank InfluenceMap lists it as the 31st biggest cumulative contributor to the climate crisis, and the 10th biggest among companies owned by private investors.Over the past 140 years, it has been responsible for more than 11bn tonnes of carbon dioxide pumped into the atmosphere, counting the pollution released when its customers use its products. That's equivalent to about 25 years of Australia's current annual emissions.Emissions Discrepancies and Financial CapacityThe company says it is acting – that its emissions are down 36% since 2020, putting it ahead of its target of a 30% reduction by 2030. But the detail here matters. The claimed cut is due to power purchase agreements signed for some grid-connected renewable energy projects, particularly in Chile, and the suspension of its struggling Western Australian nickel operations.Its direct onsite emissions, mostly from burning diesel, continue. And its annual report shows its scope-three emissions – those that result from the use of its products – have increased by 7% since the turn of the decade. The scale of that increase – more than 25m tonnes a year – dwarfs the reduction the company claims it has made.The company's own estimates suggest that its full decarbonisation could cost US$7.5bn over the next 25 years. It brings in the equivalent revenue in less than six months from its WA operations alone.Government Policy and Corporate ResponsibilityOne reason BHP hasn't invested more heavily in emissions reduction might be that the Australian Labor government is sending mixed messages to big miners even as it pledges the country will reach net zero emissions by 2050.Mining companies receive more than $4bn a year in rebates on the cost of diesel that are not offered to households and small businesses. BHP is the biggest beneficiary. According to the thinktank Clean Energy Finance, the fuel tax credit scheme lowered its fuel bill by about $620m last year.Making fossil fuels cheaper is a strange way to encourage the uptake of electric trucks running on renewable energy. It also works against the goals of a government policy that requires big industrial sites, including those operated by BHP, to cut emissions year-on-year.

The letdowns keep coming. The Everlane-Shein Merger: A Collision of Ideals Now the internet is reeling from a report that Shein plans to acquire Everlane, the San Francisco-based sustainable basics brand built on "radical transparency". Shein is the Chinese ultra-fast fashion giant epitomising murky supply chains and crazy-cheap landfill fashion. They release up to 10,000 styles a day, and have been making headlines of their own over secrecy and alleged links to forced Uyghur labor. Fashion reporter Lauren Sherman reported the acquisition plans this week, though neither Shein nor Everlane have confirmed. Everlane appears to be losing money fast. After layoffs in 2020 and 2023, the brand confirmed in April it was closing its San Francisco office. The Financial Calculus Behind Sustainable Fashion's Fall According to Sherman, Shein sees value in the brand's supply chain and was the only one willing to stump up the US $100m asked by Everlane's majority owner, private equity giant L Catterton (which is backed by LVMH, and owned RM Williams before Australian billionaire Andrew Forrest bought it in 2020). Shein can afford it – last year, their sales topped £2bn in the UK and $1.5bn in Australia. For my money, I bet it's not just the practical capabilities of the supply chain that interests Shein, it's the story. They could use a green glow-up. The Shifting Landscape of Ethical Fashion The Everlane tragedy follows last month's Allbirds comedy. Another publicly listed sustainable fashion company driven by Silicon Valley hype, Allbirds has given up making sneakers out of carbon neutral materials in order to flog AI. The surprise pivot came with a name change – NewBird – and a cynical cash grab. The old bird had been leaking money; the new one sent stock surging 600%. I visited Allbirds HQ the same year I interviewed Preysman. We discussed their B Corp journey, material innovation and how co-founder Joey Zwillinger reckoned "at the end of the day, people don't buy sustainable products, they buy great product experiences". I titled the podcast episode 'The Eco-Awesomeness of Allbirds – Sustainable Shoes for Changemakers'. The Future of Sustainability: Beyond Greenwashing So how do we navigate this moment? Accept it: sustainability is not hot right now. OK! This was never meant to be a popularity contest. The movement needs to get back to basics. Circularity won't save us – we must focus on workers' rights and the just transition. Have hard conversations about overproduction. Dismantle consumerism as the dominant narrative and define a properly radical approach to system change. You can't take the politics out of this, but why would you want to? As the last few months have shown us, when sustainability becomes purely about the business case, it stops meaning anything at all.

Its defeats have been politics of a different sort, showing that the bipartisan pro-science consensus is still intact, and for the moment has the power to hold Mr Trump in check. A Global Trend What is happening in the US is not unique. Wherever rightwing populists triumph, science is likely to suffer. Jair Bolsonaro’s rule in Brazil saw him attack scientists and cut environmental funding. In India, Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist government purged the theory of evolution from school textbooks. In Britain, Reform UK has already attempted local government cuts, targeting net zero spending. The Changing Role of Scientists Scientists have tended to avoid party politics for a specific reason. Historians identify an implicit scientific social contract that emerged in western states after the second world war, which established the state as the main funder of research, but in theory discouraged direct political interference by government. Many scientists believe that engaging in politics endangers this compact: if scientists don’t bother politics, it won’t bother them. A New Era for Science and Politics Scientists are no longer just defending funding. They are defending the idea that science should be independent of politics. What scientists gain by organising protests, speaking to the public through their academies and now running for office is a better understanding of the changing public sphere that they are part of. The public may gain an ally against rightwing populism – and a deeper, more serious engagement with the scientific challenges facing society. Mr Trump set out to tame scientists. He may have politicised them instead.

This means that if DSIT's projections are accurate, the energy demands of AI datacentres would far outpace the government's current plans for grid expansion and decarbonization.Each proposed AI growth zone would require at least 500MW of electricity – an amount only slightly less than DESNZ's forecast for the increase in energy usage of the entire commercial services sector. This suggests that even a handful of these zones would strain the government's energy planning.Revised Emissions Figures and ControversyThe controversy surrounding these projections deepened when DSIT revised its figures for the carbon emissions of AI datacentres. Originally, DSIT's projections for the carbon emissions of additional AI computing capacity were between 0.025m and 0.142m tonnes of carbon equivalent (MtCO₂) – below 0.05% of Britain's projected emissions.After questions were raised about the plausibility of these figures, the document containing them was removed from the government website. Then, after inquiries from The Guardian, DSIT updated its numbers significantly. This already sat awkwardly alongside its hell-for-leather embrace of a hyperscale AI datacentre buildout, which unchecked could double the electricity consumption of the entire country. The situation has now been revealed to be much, much worse, given the fact the government doesn't seem to have done even the most basic arithmetic needed to measure the potential new carbon emissions of these datacentres."Officials from the DSIT appear to have made the revision after an investigation by Foxglove, an independent watchdog, and the Carbon Brief news site said they appeared to be a significant underestimate.
