Gunmen Kidnap Dozens of Students in Nigeria’s Borno State

Armed gunmen stormed Mussa Primary and Junior Secondary School in Askira-Uba, Borno, abducting doze…
Gunmen Storm Mussa School, Seizing Dozens of PupilsAt about 9 am (08:00 GMT) on Friday, suspected insurgents on motorcycles entered Mussa Primary and Junior Secondary School in the Askira-Uba Local Government Area of Borno State. Ubaidallah Hasaan, a nearby resident, reported that the attackers moved swiftly while classes were in session and carried away a large number of students.Scale of Recent Kidnappings Across NigeriaCurrent incident: "dozens" of students taken (exact number not disclosed).Earlier this month: 23 children abducted from an orphanage in Lokoja, Kogi State.Recent parallel raid: students seized from Baptist Nursery and Primary School in Oyo State. These events follow a pattern of mass abductions that have become a revenue stream for armed groups, echoing the infamous 2014 Chibok schoolgirl kidnapping. Why the Northeast Is Becoming a Security Black HoleThe community of Mussa lies adjacent to the Sambisa Forest, a long‑standing insurgent stronghold. Despite ongoing military operations, repeated attacks on schools highlight persistent gaps in state presence, especially in rural zones where government services are minimal.Analysts, including writer Gimba Kakanda, note that insurgencies thrive not only on ideology but also on terrain, supply routes, and local economies that operate beyond state control.Future Outlook: Anticipated Rise in Rural AttacksSecurity experts warn that attacks could increase throughout 2026, driven by weakened government reach and the profitability of kidnappings. Policymakers face pressure to bolster protection for schools, improve intelligence sharing, and address underlying socioeconomic drivers such as chronic poverty and educational exclusion.

How Liza Minnelli's Muppet Show Performance Inspired a Drag Career

A drag performer recounts how watching Liza Minnelli's 1979 appearance on The Muppet Show inspired …
The Transformative Night in Blackpool Bronzed, with winged tips and doused in Le Male, I clamped the baby pink GHDs to my hair until they sizzled and singed it. Emerging from a cloud of cheap hairspray, I was ready for the dancefloor. I was 18 and had grown up in Blackpool, a place synonymous with hedonism and fun. I came out in high school at the age of 14 and from 16 I studied performing arts at a local college. Underage, I was smuggled into clubs and in my spare time I watched shows in our many beautiful theatres. The bright lights of the illuminations, the showgirls, the feathers, sequins and rhinestones were intoxicating. Blackpool really was – and still is – extraordinary. When the bar closed, a new adventure would begin. One night, as the sun was coming up (and as was I), a drag queen took me back to her place. I didn't know the significance of what I was about to experience, but I was to receive an education no university course could ever match. The drag queen was a Liza Minnelli tribute act. She knew every beat of every Liza film, every concert, every move of choreography. She performed as Liza in all the bars around town. Now I was ordained by being welcomed into her home. This moment could be the plot of a movie with Blackpool as a beautiful backdrop to my coming out/coming-of-age fantasy The Muppet Show That Changed Everything Was I ready to be indoctrinated? Very. She led me to the living room for a VHS screening of what I was told was one of Liza's finest performances. I was expecting Cabaret, the winner of eight Academy Awards, but not on this occasion. She sat me on the sofa and played Episode 414 of The Muppet Show from 1979, with special guest the one and only Liza Minnelli. The premise works so beautifully for exactly the same reason that The Muppet Christmas Carol is so beloved. In that film, Michael Caine gives the performance of his life in a movie almost entirely populated by felt characters, and in her guest episode Liza matches him in commitment. Take the musical number Copacabana she performs: the curtain goes up and Liza is smoking. She is the narrator, the storyteller, in a Funny Face-esque black polo neck that gives a real sense of gravitas to those Barry Manilow lyrics. Moments later, she is Lola, dancing with human-sized muppets. Or in another scene Liza holds Kermit while they sing A Quiet Thing together. Their connection is pure and tender, a thing of simplicity and gentleness. A Career Born from Inspiration As I reflect on this story nearly 20 years later, I am now 10 years sober and while life might well be a cabaret, the decadence of my early youth is firmly in the past. But I think back to this moment, which could be the plot of a movie with Blackpool as a beautiful cinematic backdrop to my coming out/coming-of-age Technicolor fantasy. I didn't know at the time, but this incident set me on the path to my current profession. Four years later, in 2011, I started making cabaret performances in south London at the famed Royal Vauxhall Tavern at nights such as Duckie, where my turns were packed full of wigs and jockstraps, fake blood and mascot costumes. In 2015, I joined the international circuit when I became part of big touring pieces of variety and circus spectacle, showing off in the US, Australia, New Zealand and London's glittering West End. I once performed a 107-hour durational piece in drag at Glastonbury and at the Adelaide fringe, as a teenage girl who wouldn't leave her bedroom. A Lifelong Dedication to Liza's Legacy Ever since that fateful night back in Blackpool in the 2000s, Liza has been a hero of mine. I saw her live in concert at the Royal Festival Hall in London in 2013. I have a Liza tattoo on my right thigh. Back in 2019, I did an eight-hour performance in an old deconsecrated church in Brighton, dressed as Liza Minnelli, performing her album Results in full, emulating through endurance art Liza's beautiful commitment to performance. Pet Shop Boys, who produced Liza's Results album, even heard about what I was up to and said my performance sounded great. The Enduring Impact of a Single Performance And if you ever see one of my shows, please understand that the technical foundation of my performances isn't drama school training or Stanislavski; it's Liza on The Muppets. Truth be told, I don't know where the drag queen in the story is now. I hope she's OK, but if I did see her I'd say: "Thank you for changing my life." Harry Clayton-Wright's show Mr Blackpool is at the Grand theatre, Blackpool, 20 May.

Young and Educated: UK Muslims' Shifting Demographics

A new report reveals that British Muslims are one of the youngest and fastest-growing groups in the…
The Lead A recent report by the Muslim Council of Britain has found that Muslims make up 6.5 percent of the population of England and Wales, with a median age of just 27 – 13 years younger than the national average. Nearly half are under 25, meaning British Muslims are one of the youngest and fastest-growing groups in the country. Demographic Shift Researchers say that shift could become politically significant if the voting age is lowered to 16, potentially adding about 150,000 more Muslim voters to the electorate. “This is a young, British-born, highly educated generation, and politicians who still think of Muslims as outsiders are reading from a script that is 20 years out of date,” said Miqdad Asaria, associate professor in health policy at the London School of Economics and Political Science. Education and Inequality The report, British Muslims in Numbers, analyses census data across 2001, 2011 and 2021 and argues that much of Britain’s understanding of Muslim life is now outdated. British Muslims remain one of the youngest populations in England and Wales, with a median age of 27. However, the report also paints a stark picture of inequality and struggle, with about 110,000 Muslim households – 10.3 percent – being lone-parent households with dependent children, higher than the national average of 6.9 percent. Signs of Social Mobility Despite these challenges, the report documents signs of social mobility. Muslim women’s economic activity has risen by 37 percent over the past two decades. Nearly a third of Muslims now hold degrees, close to the national average, while among 16–24-year-olds, Muslims now exceed the national average for degree-level attainment. The Future Outlook For researchers behind the report, the central question is no longer whether Muslims belong, but whether Britain’s institutions are prepared for the scale of the demographic and social change already under way. “Muslims are increasingly well-educated, entrepreneurial, economically active and engaged citizens,” said Abdul-Azim Ahmed, deputy director of the Centre for the Study of Islam in the UK.

Meridian Ventures Launches $35M Fund Targeting MBA‑Deferred Founders

Meridian Ventures announced the close of a $35 million fund aimed at backing pre‑seed and seed startups founded by MBA‑deferred entrepreneurs. The fund, raised by founders Devon Gethers and Karlton Haney, will deploy capital over three years with average checks of $500,000 for pre‑seed and $750,000 for seed rounds.Meridian Ventures Unveils a Fund Focused on MBA‑Deferred FoundersThe duo, both Harvard Business School students in 2023, built the thesis that MBAs can be successful founders despite Silicon Valley skepticism. After a $2.5 million proof‑of‑concept fund backed 45 companies, they secured an oversubscribed institutional round from public banks, family offices, and Fortune 500 executives.Fund Structure, Check Sizes and LP CompositionFund size: $35 millionTarget sectors: enterprise technology across fintech, logistics, healthcare, AIAverage investment: $500,000 (pre‑seed), $750,000 (seed)Investment horizon: three yearsLimited partners: publicly traded banks, family offices, Fortune 500 executivesImplications for MBA‑Driven Entrepreneurship and Early‑Stage CapitalThe fund addresses a perceived “gap” between ambitious founders building frontier technologies and the capital needed to scale. By backing MBA‑deferred founders, Meridian challenges the narrative that MBAs lack the risk‑taking mindset of traditional Silicon Valley founders, potentially encouraging more business‑school graduates to pursue startup routes.Future Outlook: Shifts in VC Sourcing and Founder DemographicsIf the fund meets its deployment targets by 2028, it could signal a broader move among VCs to tap into the talent pool of graduate‑school entrepreneurs. Success may prompt additional capital allocations toward similar thesis‑driven funds, reshaping early‑stage financing dynamics across the United States.

Valie Export: The Feminist Artist Who Provoked Revolution Through Art

Valie Export, the pioneering Austrian feminist artist whose provocative performances challenged pat…
The LeadPunk, intellectual, feminist, theorist, brave as hell, vulnerable, funny—Valie Export was a hero to many women. Since the 1960s, she was driven by a fierce conviction that art and media would play an essential role in women's liberation: that women must picture their own reality in the name of social progress. In Women's Art: A Manifesto (1972), she wrote that women must "use art as a means of expression, so as to influence the consciousness of all of us". What she demanded was revolution. The Revolutionary Art of Valie ExportI keep returning to her work. Can't stay away. Her work was heavy with explicit threat and pain, and she made evident the violence of forcing women's bodies to inhabit structures that were not designed for them. For the 1973 performance Hyperbulia she crept naked through a corridor of electrified wires, exposing herself voluntarily to shocks. Her 1976 photocollage The Birth Madonna shows a woman positioned like a Renaissance Madonna seated on a drying machine from which spews a bloody towel—it still provokes shock.Challenging Societal ConstraintsExport spoke with tremendous clarity about her work and the ideas underpinning it. Her father died during the war, and she was sent to a convent with her two sisters while their mother worked as a primary school teacher. The first of her many expulsions came aged 10 when she was discovered exploring the nun's living quarters. Her experience of girlhood was of constraint—of having little or no control over her own life.In 1967, aged 27, she swapped her married name Waltraud Höllinger for the moniker VALIE EXPORT. A play on a cigarette brand, written in capital letters, it was a decisive rejection of patriarchal structures. She would be known neither by her father's name, nor by her ex-husband's.The Power of PerformanceHer work was intended to explode the structures containing her—in cinema, in art and in the wider society. In Action Pants: Genital Panic (1969) she walked along the rows of a Munich art cinema with her exposed pubic region level with punters' faces, and plastered the walls of Vienna with posters of herself in crotchless trousers holding a gun.For Tap and Touch Cinema in 1968, she constructed a theatre in a box strapped to her chest, with people on the street invited to reach into the darkness and touch her breasts while she watched them. Documentary of the performance exposes the shifting power dynamic between Export and the men who accept the invitation. It was brilliantly subversive and unsettling.More recently, her 1968 performance From the Portfolio of Doggedness has drawn attention—during which she led Peter Weibel crawling through the streets of Vienna by a dog lead. Weibel was dressed in a business suit, a disturbing echo of the commuters milling around him.A Lasting Feminist LegacyHer 1972 manifesto described how the spark kindled by women's art might ignite far-reaching social change. It concludes by stating the importance of documenting and honouring the life and work of those who had come before, as we must now do hers. "The future of women will be the history of woman."I grieve her in the most selfish way: there were so many things I wanted to ask her about. Having survived decades in which women's art was marginalised and ignored, she had so much to tell us. Like a fool, I kept delaying a planned interview. Now it's too late.

Tech Giants Slash Middle Management in AI‑Driven Efficiency Push

Tech firms are accelerating the removal of middle‑manager layers, citing AI’s ability to boost prod…
Tech companies are rapidly cutting middle‑manager layers as AI promises to do more with fewer people, with firms such as Coinbase, Block, Meta and Amazon announcing sweeping restructurings that shift managers into hybrid supervisor‑producer roles.AI‑Powered Management Flattening Across Major Tech FirmsCEOs have framed AI as a catalyst for flattening hierarchies, pledging to eliminate “unnecessary management layers.” Recent moves include:Coinbase laid off 14% of its workforce while eliminating “pure managers.”Block cut 40% of staff and assigned some engineering managers up to 175 direct reports.Meta increased managers’ span of control and required them to contribute code, as described by former manager Prateek Singh.Amazon raised the employee‑to‑manager ratio by at least 15% to boost ownership.Numbers Illustrating the Scale of the Managerial CutbacksOpenings for middle‑manager jobs in the US fell 42% at the end of 2025 compared with the 2022 peak (Revelio Labs).Middle managers made up 13% of the US workforce in 2022 (Harvard Business School).Block’s internal charts show some managers handling up to 175 reports, far above the traditional 6‑12 range. How the New Structure Reshapes Work and Risks EmergingAnalysts warn that the shift places extra pressure on remaining managers, who must now act as both supervisors and producers.Managers may rely on AI agents for asynchronous updates, reducing face‑to‑face mentorship.Potential for flawed AI‑generated decisions to cascade into security or operational failures.Reduced human interaction could hurt employee motivation, especially for less‑experienced or marginalized teams. What the Future Holds for Middle Management in an AI EraExperts predict a continued decline in traditional middle‑manager roles, with companies investing in upskilling and AI‑augmented decision‑making.Companies will need to redesign coordination processes and provide training for broader decision authority.Fewer promotion pathways may increase talent attrition, prompting firms to rethink career ladders.Hybrid “player‑coach” models could become the norm, blending technical contribution with limited people‑management duties.

Trump Claims 'Problems Settled' with China as He Concludes Beijing Summit with Xi

President Donald Trump concluded his China visit by claiming to have settled numerous issues with P…
The Lead: Trump-Xi Summit Concludes with Claims of Resolved IssuesPresident Donald Trump wrapped up his state visit to China by meeting with President Xi Jinping in Beijing's Zhongnanhai leadership compound, claiming to have settled "a lot of different problems" that previous administrations couldn't resolve. The US president described the visit as "incredible" and emphasized the strength of his personal relationship with Xi, while highlighting what he called "fantastic trade deals" for both countries. The Event Details: Final Day of Diplomatic EngagementThe meeting marked the final day of Trump's summit in China, where the two leaders engaged in both formal discussions and private conversations. Trump specifically mentioned their agreement on Iran, stating both countries share similar views on preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and keeping the Strait of Hormuz open. "We want them to get it ended because it's a crazy thing there," Trump added regarding the Iranian situation.Following the approximately two-hour meeting, Trump was escorted to Beijing Airport by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, where a red carpet ceremony awaited. The departure was marked by dozens of schoolchildren waving both American and Chinese flags and chanting "farewell" in unison, symbolizing the carefully choreographed nature of diplomatic protocol. The Impact Analysis: Shifting Dynamics in US-China RelationsThis summit represents a significant moment in US-China relations, coming at a time of heightened trade tensions and geopolitical competition. Trump's emphasis on personal diplomacy and his claim to have resolved longstanding issues suggests a potential recalibration in how the two superpowers engage with each other. The public display of warmth between the leaders contrasts with the often-contentious relationship between their administrations, indicating a possible pragmatic approach to managing differences while seeking common ground. The focus on trade deals and Iran suggests both nations are prioritizing economic security and regional stability, potentially at the expense of addressing human rights concerns and broader geopolitical competition that have characterized recent years of US-China relations. The Prediction: Future Trajectory of Bilateral RelationsLooking ahead, the Trump-Xi summit may signal a period of pragmatic engagement where both countries prioritize economic cooperation and crisis management over ideological confrontation. However, the fundamental structural challenges in the relationship—including technological competition, security concerns in the Indo-Pacific, and differing political systems—remain unchanged. The coming months will reveal whether this apparent thaw represents a genuine shift toward more stable relations or merely a tactical pause in ongoing strategic competition.Trade relations, in particular, will be a key indicator of the summit's lasting impact, with implementation details of the "fantastic trade deals" Trump mentioned likely to face scrutiny from businesses, investors, and policymakers in both countries.

Trump's Beijing Pageantry Highlights a Shift Toward Authoritarian Sympathies

Former US President Donald Trump spent the first day of his Beijing summit immersed in Chinese page…
The Beijing Summit: A Stage for Trump's Authoritarian Aesthetic On the opening day of his visit to Beijing, Donald Trump embraced the rigid ceremony of the Great Hall of the People, offering a rare public endorsement of the host nation’s grandeur. Rather than delivering policy‑laden statements, he repeatedly described China as “beautiful,” positioning himself as a guest who respects the host’s symbols of power. Pageantry Over Policy: Symbolic Gestures That Dominated the Visit Military‑style arrival with martial music, a 21‑gun salute and troops marching in lockstep. Public applause for schoolchildren waving bouquets and US flags – a theatrical moment Trump highlighted in post‑event remarks. Reference to his own 2025 Washington birthday parade, drawing a parallel between American and Chinese displays of strength. Absence of a post‑flight interview or a Truth Social post, signaling an unusual circumspection. Silence on Taiwan: What the Absence of Commentary Signifies When reporters pressed Trump about the Taiwan question, he ignored the queries, allowing Xi Jinping to issue a stark warning that mishandling the issue could lead to “clashes or even conflicts.” The deliberate silence suggests a strategic avoidance of provocation, contrasting with Trump’s usual combative style. Implications for US‑China Relations and Domestic Perceptions The overt deference displayed in Beijing may reshape how allies and opponents view the former president’s foreign‑policy outlook. By aligning himself with the visual language of an authoritarian regime, Trump reinforces his long‑standing “strongman” narrative, potentially bolstering his appeal among domestic constituencies that favor decisive, hierarchical leadership. At the same time, the episode could complicate diplomatic calculations for both Washington and Beijing, as it blurs the line between personal spectacle and statecraft. Looking Ahead: Potential Paths for the Trump‑Xi Dynamic Future interactions will likely hinge on whether the two leaders can translate ceremonial goodwill into concrete agreements. If Trump continues to prioritize symbolism over substantive dialogue, the summit may remain a showcase rather than a catalyst for policy change. Conversely, any move toward substantive trade or security talks could signal a pragmatic shift, though the underlying authoritarian aesthetic is expected to persist as a defining feature of his diplomatic style.
