Take Part in the British Solving Championship

The British Solving Championship, organized by the British Chess Problem Society and sponsored by W…
The British Solving Championship: An Opportunity for Chess Enthusiasts This week’s puzzle is a chance to enter an annual national competition in which Guardian readers traditionally perform well and in considerable numbers. White in the diagram, playing as usual up the board, is to play and checkmate in two moves, against any black defence. The Event Details The puzzle is the first stage of the annual Winton British Solving Championship, organised by the British Chess Problem Society and sponsored by the investment managers Winton. This competition is only open to British residents and entry is free. To take part, simply send White’s first move by post to Nigel Dennis, Boundary House, 230 Greys Road, Henley-on-Thames, Oxon RG9 1QY, or by email to [email protected]. Entry Requirements and Deadline All entries must be postmarked or emailed no later than 31 July 2026. Entrants must provide their name and home address. Juniors under 18 on 31 August 2025 must also give their date of birth. The Competition Structure The best 15-20 players from the postal round, plus the best juniors, will be invited to the final at Harrow school on Saturday 13 February 2027, where the prize money is expected to be at least £1,600. The winner of the final will have the right to represent Great Britain at the 2027 world solving championships, an event where GB are often medal contenders. A Note on Chess and Professionals Back in the 1950s most top English players were amateurs, often civil servants or teachers, who competed in tournaments during their vacations. After the 1970s Fischer boom and English successes brought an influx of sponsors, chess professionals could earn a decent living, but the tide turned again during the 1990s. The breakup of the Soviet Union brought harder international competition, while Nigel Short’s world title defeat and the move to screen rather than print marketing drove sponsors away. A New Grandmaster: Harry Grieve Harry Grieve became England’s latest grandmaster on Tuesday when the 25-year-old, who was British champion in 2022 and helped CSC/Kingston finish second in this season’s UK 4NCL League, won first prize in Budapest with a 7/9 total.

The LeadIsraeli fighter jets conducted strikes on a village in southern Lebanon, escalating tensions in the already volatile region. The attack comes amid ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestinian groups in Gaza, raising concerns about potential wider regional conflict.South Lebanon Village Targeted in AirstrikesThe Israeli military operation targeted a specific location in southern Lebanon, though details about the exact nature of the target remain unclear. Local reports indicate damage to infrastructure in the village, though there has been no immediate confirmation of casualties from official sources. The strikes represent a significant escalation in cross-border tensions between Israel and Lebanon.Regional Implications of Escalating ViolenceThe attack in south Lebanon occurs against a backdrop of heightened military activity along the Israel-Lebanon border. Hezbollah, the Lebanese militant group with close ties to Iran, has expressed solidarity with Palestinian groups in Gaza. This latest development could potentially draw Lebanon more directly into the ongoing conflict, threatening to expand beyond the current Gaza theater. Regional powers including the United States, Iran, and Turkey are closely monitoring the situation.Path to Escalation or De-escalation?Looking ahead, the situation remains highly fluid. If Israel perceives increased threat from Lebanon, it may conduct further military operations. Conversely, diplomatic channels involving international mediators could be activated to prevent full-scale conflict. The coming days will be critical in determining whether this incident represents a temporary escalation or the beginning of a wider regional confrontation.

Trump Makes 'Final Determination' on Potential Iran Deal Amid Deep Mistrust

President Trump is set to make a 'final determination' on a potential deal with Iran that could ext…
The Lead: Trump's Decision Point on IranUnited States President Donald Trump has announced he is meeting in the Situation Room to make a "final determination" on a possible deal with Iran that could extend the ceasefire and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The announcement comes amid deep mistrust between the two sides, with Iran's top negotiator emphasizing that Tehran will judge any agreement by actions rather than promises. The Proposed Deal: Conditions and ConcessionsIn his latest post on the Truth Social platform, Trump outlined numerous conditions for Tehran to accept, including: never developing a nuclear weapon, ensuring the Strait of Hormuz remains open in both directions without tolls, removing any remaining mines in the Strait, and allowing the US to unearth and destroy Iran's enriched uranium. Trump also noted that ships caught in the Strait due to the US naval blockade "may start the process of 'heading home!'" and that "no money will be exchanged until further notice."The Diplomatic Context: Uncertainty and Mixed SignalsUncertainty about the details of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) has grown over the past week amid ongoing distrust between the US and Iran as they seek to end the three-month-long war. While White House sources indicated that the US and Iran had reached a tentative agreement to extend the ceasefire by 60 days, Trump has yet to sign off. Iranian state news outlet Fars reported that the agreement was in its final stages of ratification, but stressed there were no provisions about destroying Iran's nuclear materials in the MOU.The Iranian Position: Actions Over PromisesIran's top negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, emphasized Tehran's position that "no action will be taken before the other side acts," stating that "guarantees and words, only actions are the criterion." He added that "the winner of any agreement is the one who is better prepared for war the day after," highlighting the deep-seated mistrust that continues to plague negotiations between the two nations. The Regional Implications: Strait of Hormuz and BeyondThe potential reopening of the Strait of Hormuz represents a significant development in the region, with arrangements potentially including monitoring and inspection of ships. This critical waterway is vital for global oil supplies, and its closure has had substantial economic impacts. Any agreement that successfully reopens the Strait would mark a major diplomatic achievement, though the long-term sustainability of such an agreement remains questionable given the history of mistrust between Washington and Tehran. The Path Forward: Final Decision and Implementation ChallengesAs Trump prepares to make his "final determination," the coming days will be crucial in determining whether this potential deal can move from tentative agreement to formal implementation. Al Jazeera's Patty Culhane noted that in the past, the Trump administration has indicated that a deal has been reached, only to later find out it has not. If this deal were to materialize, it would represent "the entire wishlist of what the US was demanding and none of the concessions that Iranian were asking for," suggesting significant challenges in achieving a balanced agreement that satisfies both sides.

Israeli Forces Cross Litani River, Killing Five in Southern Lebanon

Israeli air strikes and a ground advance across the Litani River on 29 May 2026 killed at least fiv…
On 29 May 2026, Israeli air strikes and a ground push that crossed the Litani River resulted in at least five civilian deaths in southern Lebanon, while Pentagon‑level talks were scheduled to address the rapidly deteriorating security situation. Israeli Ground Advance Across the Litani River Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Israeli forces had moved north of the Litani River, roughly 30 km from the border, marking a significant expansion of the ground offensive. The advance was accompanied by air strikes on towns such as Abbasiyeh and Deir Qanoun al‑Nahr, and evacuation warnings for seven additional southern towns. Casualty Toll and Child Impact Figures Five civilians killed in the latest strikes. Four deaths in Abbasiyeh and one in Deir Qanoun al‑Nahr. UNICEF reported 15 children killed and 62 injured in the past week, averaging 11 child casualties every 24 hours. Lebanese Ministry of Public Health cites 77 children killed or injured in the last seven days. Since March 2, 126 civil‑defence workers have been killed and 310 wounded. Humanitarian Crisis and Regional Stability Risks The intensified bombardment has forced hundreds of thousands of Lebanese to flee their homes, with about 40 hospitals in the south already closed. Aid groups, including Doctors Without Borders, warn they may have to withdraw if security does not improve, compounding the risk of a broader humanitarian catastrophe. Prospects for Pentagon Talks and Conflict Trajectory Lebanese and Israeli delegations are set to meet at the Pentagon, where Lebanon will demand an immediate halt to Israeli attacks. Israeli Brigadier General Amichai Levin and Lebanese officer Georges Rizkallah will represent their sides. The outcome of these talks could influence whether the conflict remains localized or escalates further, especially given U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio's expressed support for Lebanon’s sovereignty.

NATO Condemns Russia After Drone Crash Raises Spillover Fears

NATO allies condemned Russia after a Russian drone crashed into a Romanian apartment building, inju…
The Drone Incident in RomaniaRomania and its NATO allies have reacted angrily after a Russian drone crashed into an apartment building in eastern Romania, injuring two people. The foreign ministry in Bucharest on Friday labelled the crash of the drone, part of an overnight attack aimed at Ukraine, a serious violation of international law and called on NATO to accelerate the transfer of anti-drone capabilities. The incident is just the latest incursion along the alliance's eastern flank, raising concern that the risk of an open confrontation between Russia and NATO states is rising.Technical Details of the CrashRomania said the overnight drone was tracked by radar in its airspace before crashing onto the roof of a residential building in the city of Galati. Two F-16 fighter jets and a helicopter were scrambled, as authorities issued emergency alerts to residents. Two people suffered minor injuries and several residents were evacuated after a fire was triggered by the crash.Geopolitical RamificationsThe incident is just the latest of several, as the war in Ukraine has spilled over into neighbouring NATO countries, raising fears of potential escalation. Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia, as well as Finland have all reported repeated incursions into their airspace in recent months. Drone incursions sparked a government collapse in Latvia earlier this month.Shortly after the crash, Bucharest called for NATO to speed up the transfer of anti-drone capabilities. Outgoing Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan also said that Romania would, within hours, sign a contract which will give it anti-drone defences under the EU's SAFE programme.Diplomatic ResponsesOn Friday morning, Romania summoned the Russia ambassador. "We will officially communicate the consequences that this lack of responsibility on the part of the Russian Federation will have for the diplomatic relations between our countries, as well as the next steps at the European level regarding sanctions packages," Foreign Minister Oana Toiu wrote on social media.President Nicusor Dan stated that Romania will not accept that the war of aggression waged by Russia against Ukraine be transferred to its citizens, and added that he had asked the foreign ministry to present without delay a series of measures regarding the country's relationship with Russia, "proportionate to this very serious situation."International CondemnationNATO allies and others joined the chorus of anger. French Minister for European Affairs Benjamin Haddad said the incident highlighted the threat Russia poses to European security, noting that French troops are stationed in Romania."Regardless of whether it was on purpose or the result of ineptitude, Russia is still dangerous and we must defend ourselves against it," Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski told the Reuters news agency. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the incident showed that "Russia's war of aggression has crossed yet another line".A NATO spokesperson also condemned "Russia's recklessness" on social media. Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha pledged "Ukraine stands firmly by Romania" as he branded Russia a threat to the Black Sea region and the wider European continent.Escalation ConcernsUnited Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that the escalating attacks risk spiralling "out of control", with "unknown and unintended consequences". He said more civilians had been killed in the first four months of this year than during the same period in the previous three years, and called for diplomacy, immediate de-escalation and "a full and unconditional ceasefire".Concern that the war is threatening to spillover is building as Russia escalates hostilities in a bid to ward off rising political and economic pressure at home. Ukrainian forces reported that they shot down 217 drones overnight on Friday. Russia attacked with 232 drones and one ballistic missile. Hits were recorded in 14 areas, the air force said.Russia's Strategic PosturingMoscow has said it plans "systematic strikes" on Kyiv and has issued a barrage of threats at Ukraine's European allies, listing facilities in Europe that it said are involved in manufacturing drones and components for Ukraine. Moscow's Foreign Intelligence Service recently warned the Baltic nations that their NATO membership won't protect them from retaliation should they allow Ukraine to launch attacks from their territory, with analysts warning that the risk of an open confrontation between Russia and NATO states is rising.Article 5 Under ScrutinyThat heightens concern regarding NATO's Article 5 collective defence clause, which President Donald Trump has hinted the United States may not honour in some cases. However, the alliance's Secretary General Mark Rutte insisted on Friday that NATO will defend all of its territory."Russia's reckless behaviour is a danger to us all," he wrote on social media. "Last night showed yet again that the implications of their illegal war of aggression don't stop at the border." "We will continue to strengthen our deterrence and defence at home and continue our support for Ukraine as they defend against Russia's aggression," he added.

Blue Origin's New Glenn Rocket Explodes During Florida Test

Blue Origin's New Glenn rocket exploded during a test in Florida, calling it an 'anomaly' while con…
The LeadBlue Origin's New Glenn rocket exploded during a test in Florida on Thursday, an incident which the aerospace company called an "anomaly." All personnel have been accounted for, and the company has promised to provide updates as they learn more about what caused the explosion. The Explosion DetailsA livestream posted by NSF, an aerospace news organization, captured the fiery plume of the explosion. Homes shook in nearby Cape Canaveral and Cocoa Beach around 9pm, with residents turning to social media to ask what happened. Cape Canaveral Space Force Station's Launch Complex 36 is visible from the beach, and the internet quickly filled with photos of the orange fireball. Emergency officials confirmed there was no threat due to fumes or other potential hazards.Recent Setbacks for Blue OriginThis explosion marks another setback for Blue Origin, which is owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. The New Glenn rocket was already grounded in April, as the Federal Aviation Administration required Blue Origin to investigate an engine mishap. The FAA has not yet commented on whether Thursday's explosion will trigger another investigation.Industry Competition ImplicationsThe incident comes at a critical time for Blue Origin's space ambitions. Earlier this week, NASA announced it had chosen Blue Origin over Elon Musk's SpaceX to conduct the first of three uncrewed lunar missions this year to kickstart construction of a $20 billion moon base. Both companies are competing to provide crew landers for upcoming Artemis missions, including the planned 2028 return of humans to the moon on Artemis IV. Both companies have built large new facilities in or close to Cape Canaveral's Kennedy Space Center to support crewed and cargo missions in partnership with NASA.Future Outlook for Blue OriginDespite the explosion, Blue Origin's space ambitions remain significant. The company has a vested interest in space tourism, having sent an all-female, star-studded crew including Gayle King and Katy Perry into space last April. Elon Musk, whose SpaceX lost the NASA contract to Blue Origin, commented on the incident, writing "Most unfortunate. Rockets are hard." This latest explosion may delay Blue Origin's timeline but is unlikely to derail their long-term space exploration goals, though it may create opportunities for competitors like SpaceX to gain ground in the increasingly competitive private space race.
