Iran Assures 'Non-Hostile' Ships Safe Passage Through Strait of Hormuz

Iran has assured that 'non-hostile' vessels can safely pass through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route for about one-fifth of the world's oil and liquified natural gas supplies. The assurance comes amid a significant collapse in maritime traffic through the strait, which has contributed to a major global energy crisis. In a statement released through its mission to the United Nations, Iran specified that ships would be allowed to transit the strait 'provided that they neither participate in nor support acts of aggression against Iran and fully comply with the declared safety and security regulations.'The development follows a sharp decline in shipping traffic through the strait, with only about 5 vessels passing through daily, compared to an average of 120 daily transits before the US-Israel conflict began. This reduction has led to a surge in global energy prices, with Brent crude experiencing significant fluctuations.Iran's statement also mentioned that ships will be allowed to transit 'in coordination with the competent Iranian authorities.' The country has shared similar assurances with the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the UN body responsible for international shipping safety and security. The move comes as US President Donald Trump mentioned ongoing negotiations to end the conflict with Iran, despite Tehran's previous denials of talks. The situation remains complex, with global markets closely watching for any signs of resolution.

Australia has reaffirmed its support for Lebanon's sovereignty and expressed opposition to any Israeli occupation of the country's southern region. Foreign Minister Penny Wong made these statements during a conversation with her Israeli counterpart, Gideon Sa'ar.The conversation comes as Israel has revealed plans to establish a 'defensive buffer' against the Iran-backed armed group Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. This move has raised concerns about the potential for occupation of Lebanese territory.Wong emphasized Australia's grave concerns about the expansion of the conflict in Lebanon, which has resulted in the loss of life and the displacement of over one million civilians. She also stressed that Australia supports Lebanon's sovereignty and does not want to see Israeli occupation of southern Lebanon. The situation in Lebanon is further complicated by Hezbollah's continued strikes on Israel. Wong and Sa'ar agreed that Hezbollah must disarm in line with previous agreements. In addition to these developments, Australia has announced an extra $5 million in aid to support civilians in Lebanon impacted by the conflict, particularly women and children.Wong also advised Australians in Lebanon to leave now if it is safe to do so, citing the deteriorating situation.

Israel Accused of Torture License Against Palestinians

Allegations surface that Israel has been granted a license to torture Palestinians, sparking intern…
A recent statement has accused Israel of being granted a license to torture Palestinians, raising serious concerns about human rights violations in the region. The allegations, reported by Al Jazeera, have not been independently verified, but they highlight the ongoing tensions and humanitarian issues faced by Palestinians. The claim suggests that Israel's actions could be in direct contravention of international human rights law, which strictly prohibits torture and cruel treatment. This development has the potential to strain diplomatic relations and could lead to increased scrutiny of Israel's policies at the international level.

US-Iran Negotiations Leave Israel in Uncertainty

Israeli analysts express disappointment and confusion over US President Donald Trump's claim of ong…
Israeli analysts are expressing a sense of disappointment and confusion following US President Donald Trump's assertion that negotiations with Iran to de-escalate the conflict are ongoing. This comes as a surprise, given Trump's previous threats to launch strikes against Iran's energy infrastructure and Tehran's denials of any negotiations taking place. The situation has left many in Israel questioning the country's role in the conflict, particularly as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had framed the war as an existential threat to Israel, with the US joining forces to combat Iran. Netanyahu has boasted of convincing the US to support Israel's stance against Iran.In a video statement, Netanyahu mentioned that Trump believed it was possible to leverage the military achievements of both the US and Israel to secure an agreement that would safeguard their vital interests. He emphasized that Israel continues to attack Iran and Lebanon, methodically dismantling Iran's missile and nuclear programs and targeting Hezbollah.Despite Netanyahu's assertions, many Israelis are aware that the war was initially presented as an effort to overthrow the Iranian government and eliminate the threat from the country. With the Islamic Republic still standing and Iran launching deadly attacks on Israel, the prospect of a negotiated end to the conflict is unsettling.Former Israeli ambassador Alon Pinkas suggested that if Trump has pushed for negotiations over Netanyahu's objections, it may indicate that the US president has realized Netanyahu may have misled him about the feasibility and speed of a victory and the viability of regime change in Iran.Political scientist Ori Goldberg described Trump's move as a defeat for Netanyahu, essentially ditching Israel. He noted that this development undermines Israel's status as a serious player that the US or other states would want to engage with. The situation highlights the complex dynamics between Israel, the US, and Iran, with analysts suggesting that even if Israel has been sidelined in current negotiations, it has still achieved significant gains in its fight against Iran. Israeli political analyst Nimrod Flashenberg noted that Israel's primary goal may have been to downgrade Iran's military capabilities, which it has accomplished in a way that ensures long-term US commitment to maintaining this status.

UN Expert Accuses World of Granting Israel 'Licence to Torture' Palestinians

A UN expert has condemned the international community for effectively giving Israel a 'licence to t…
Francesca Albanese, the UN's special rapporteur on the rights situation in Palestinian territory occupied since 1967, has made a scathing accusation against the international community, stating that they have implicitly condoned Israel's torture of Palestinians. According to Albanese, life in the occupied Palestinian territory has become a 'continuum of physical and mental suffering.'In her latest report to the UN Human Rights Council, Albanese asserted that torture has become a state policy in Israel, with the occupied territory experiencing a regime of organised humiliation, pain, and degradation sanctioned at the highest political levels. She described how mass displacement, siege, denial of aid and food, and unrestrained military and settler violence have created a space of collective punishment. The report titled 'Torture and genocide' detailed that torture is not confined to cells and interrogation rooms but is a pervasive aspect of life in the occupied territory. Albanese called on UN member states to prevent and punish acts of torture and genocide and uphold international law, warning that tolerance for such acts against Palestinians would strip the law of its meaning.Albanese's statements have drawn backlash from Israel and the United States, with Israel labelling her an 'agent of chaos' and accusing her of antisemitism and Holocaust distortion. Despite this, Albanese remains a vocal critic of Israeli actions in the occupied West Bank and Gaza.Recent statistics highlight the severity of the situation: at least 72,263 people killed and 171,944 injured in Israeli attacks on Gaza since October 7, 2023, and over 18,500 Palestinians arrested in the occupied West Bank since October 2023, including at least 1,500 children.

Martin Clunes Delivers Chilling Performance in Huw Edwards Abuse Drama

The review examines Channel 5's drama about disgraced BBC newsreader Huw Edwards, highlighting Mart…
When future generations examine television trends, they might be surprised by the glut of dramatisations about famous men caught in sex scandals. Jimmy Savile and Prince Andrew have both received multiple treatments, and now, with almost crushing inevitability, comes Channel 5's Power: The Downfall of Huw Edwards.Edwards, the high-profile BBC newsreader who resigned in 2024 before being charged with three counts of making indecent images of children, remains defensive. Prior to the broadcast, he released a statement claiming the drama is unlikely to convey reality while asserting: I am repelled by the idea that some people enjoy viewing indecent images of children. The drama earns its title by portraying a powerful man utilizing a queasy power dynamic to manipulate a teenage boy into fulfilling his sexual desires. While not the pinnacle of drama, the film succeeds in capturing a sickening feeling in the pit of your stomach. The main draw comes from its casting. Martin Clunes, known for roles that rely on his innate likability, creates an impressively accurate Edwards. He captures the fascinating mix of swagger and vulnerability, along with Edwards' distinctive accent and diction. Even during disturbing scenes, his performance never wavers. For much of the film, Edwards remains a figure of distant menace. Instead, this is really the story of Ryan (Osian Morgan), a teenage boy who finds himself being groomed by Edwards. The drama is constructed around first-hand interviews with Ryan (using a pseudonym to protect his identity), showing how Edwards validated his desire for connection before making the relationship transactional. Most powerfully, the film depicts the effect on Ryan's parents, as their dismay at his increasing waywardness first becomes anger directed at Edwards and then fear that they had become the bad guys.Still, the producers face challenges with a story that isn't visually interesting. Much of the relationship happened over text, meaning excessive time is spent watching people type or narrate messages. The film makes odd stylistic choices, including framing everything around the Queen's death and ending with Edwards reporting on his own charges.Edwards has promised to tell his side of the story, but as the reviewer notes, few will have the stomach to hear it when that day arrives.

Mike Lynch's Estate Ordered to Pay £920m to Hewlett-Packard

The estate of late British tech tycoon Mike Lynch has been ordered to pay £920m to Hewlett-Packard …
The estate of late British tech tycoon Mike Lynch has been ordered to pay £920m to the technology company Hewlett-Packard (HP) two years after he died in a superyacht disaster. The ruling by London’s high court said the estate was liable to pay the sum as compensation, costs, and interest for HP’s acquisition of Lynch’s firm Autonomy, after a UK legal ruling in 2022 that he duped the US firm into paying £8.2bn for his software firm Autonomy. The deceased entrepreneur’s estate has been estimated to be worth about £500m, so the damages could leave it bankrupt.Lynch and six others, including his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, died in August 2024 on a trip with friends and family celebrating his acquittal on US fraud charges relating to HP’s $11bn takeover of Autonomy in 2011.HP accused Lynch and Autonomy’s former chief financial officer, Sushovan Hussain, of inflating the firm’s value before the takeover. HP wrote down Autonomy’s worth by $8.8bn (£6.5bn) within a year of the purchase. The US tech company has sought damages in UK civil proceedings of up to $4.55bn from the estate of the late tycoon, who was once hailed as Britain’s answer to Microsoft founder Bill Gates. However, the level of the claim was ruled last year by the high court to be “always exaggerated”, as it concluded that Lynch’s estate owed £700m in compensation. The £920m figure includes costs and interest.Lawyers for Lynch’s estate sought permission to appeal against Tuesday’s ruling, which was refused. However, the estate can apply directly to the court of appeal.HP welcomed Tuesday’s decision, which it said in a statement “brings us another step closer to resolution of the dispute”.A spokesperson for the Lynch family said: “We are disappointed by the court’s refusal and believe an application to the court of appeal should follow in the interests of justice. HP’s $5bn damages claim has already been shown to be vastly exaggerated.“Today’s judgment describes the exaggeration as ‘without foundation’ and the purposes for which it was ‘calibrated, publicised and pursued’ as objectionable, misleading shareholders and extending the litigation unnecessarily.“Dr Lynch’s acquittal in the US, where witnesses were properly cross-examined, exposed the truth. The damage to Autonomy was the result of HP’s own actions and failures, not wrongdoing at Autonomy.”

Ipswich Town Distances Itself from Nigel Farage's 'Shameful' Visit

Ipswich Town Football Club has distanced itself from Nigel Farage after the Reform Party leader vis…
Ipswich Town Football Club has insisted it remains an inclusive and diverse organisation after Nigel Farage, the leader of the Reform Party, turned a tour of Portman Road into a political campaign event.During his visit on Monday, Farage filmed himself inside the home dressing room, held up a shirt with the No 10 and his name on the back, and suggested he was in the running for the manager's job at the Suffolk club in a promotional video posted online.Farage said that Ipswich, who are third in the Championship table, "are really in contention" to go back into the Premier League. "Let's hope they do it," he said, "but if they don't, I think there's the chance here, and I've had a chat with a few people, of the manager's job coming up next season and I'm definitely on the shortlist."The video was immediately criticised by Ipswich supporters, who described it as "shameful", "embarrassing" and "PR suicide for a family club".The club issued a statement on Tuesday afternoon distancing itself from Farage. "Ipswich Town Football Club has, over several years, hosted representatives from a range of political parties. The club remains apolitical and does not support or endorse any individual or party," the statement read."The club will continue to engage with representatives from across the political spectrum as part of its role within the community. Ipswich Town is proud to be an inclusive, diverse, and welcoming organisation that supports all members of the local and wider community. This commitment remains unchanged."It is understood that Farage was not an invited guest at the club. According to reports, the tour was booked without using Reform or Farage's name, and the printed shirt was bought from the club shop and not gifted to the 61-year-old.
