Kanya King Obituary: Mobo Awards Co-Founder Dies Aged 57

Kanya King, co-founder of the Mobo awards, has died aged 57 after a battle with colon cancer. King …
The Life and Legacy of Kanya King Kanya King, who has died aged 57 of colon cancer, was co-founder of the Mobo awards, which were set up in the UK in 1996 to celebrate music of Black origin. As CEO of the Mobo Organisation, which runs the awards and its various offshoots, King became one of the highest profile champions of Black music in the UK, while the awards themselves were credited by many Black artists with raising their profiles and boosting their careers – some even gave Mobo name-checks in their songs. The Birth of the Mobo Awards Modest in size to begin with, the first Mobos, which gave a best album award to Goldie, best jazz act to Courtney Pine and best international act to the Fugees, made an immediate impact. They were televised from the outset, with Lionel Richie performing and the soon-to-be prime minister Tony Blair in attendance at the first ceremony. The Growth and Impact of the Mobos Within a couple of years the event had a regular spot at the Royal Albert Hall in London, and with moves between Channel 4, the BBC and ITV over the years, global viewing figures touched 250 million, making the venture a financial success as well as delivering on its cultural aims. Kanya King's Approach and Legacy King would add or subtract categories year by year to reflect directions of travel, always keen to encourage and recognise new talent and developments. She was known for her warm, humble approach; something that put her in demand as a mentor and for public speaking at community, educational and corporate events. Tributes and Recognition She was made MBE in 1999, advanced to CBE in 2018. She was diagnosed with cancer in 2024, but was able to attend the 30th anniversary Mobo awards in March this year.

Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within - From Box Office Flop to Digital Artifact

Twenty-five years after its release, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within is reevaluated not as a box …
The LeadIn 1987, Japanese game designer Hironobu Sakaguchi created Final Fantasy as his last attempt to make a hit game, unknowingly launching a franchise that would span 40 years and 16 core titles. Twenty-five years later, his directorial debut in film, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, is being reevaluated not as a box office failure but as an exquisite digital relic that pushed the boundaries of CGI animation. The Technical BreakthroughFinal Fantasy: The Spirits Within represents a milestone in digital animation history. Released in 2001, the film featured groundbreaking CGI technology that was astonishing for its time. The character Aki alone had 60,000 individually rendered hair strands, and the film's photorealistic approach to character design set new standards for digital animation. Despite these technical achievements, the film sometimes feels like a YouTube compilation of cutscenes from a game you can't afford, with dream sequences highlighting the limitations of the then-revolutionary technology. The Financial ImpactThe Spirits Within was a commercial failure that had significant financial consequences. With an enormous production budget estimated at $137 million, the film grossed only $85 million worldwide, resulting in substantial losses for Square Pictures. This financial failure marked the end of Sakaguchi's ambitions for Aki Ross to become a recurring digital actor across multiple projects. The setback was particularly painful as the film was ambitiously conceived by Sakaguchi and even bore his late mother's name. The Cultural LegacyOver time, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within has gained recognition as a cult classic and a major influence on subsequent works, particularly the Mass Effect game series. The film's unique take on the Gaia hypothesis, positing that Earth is a living organism where all lifeforms carry spirits, has resonated with environmental themes in gaming and film. Despite its dense sci-fi exposition, the film's philosophical underpinnings and environmental message echo the themes of Final Fantasy VII, the franchise's most popular entry. The Future of Digital PreservationTwenty-five years after its release, The Spirits Within stands as an important artifact in the evolution of digital animation. As AI technology rekindles similar ambitions for digital actors—exemplified by the controversial "Tilly Norwood" touted as the first AI actor—the film serves as both inspiration and cautionary tale. The rise of AI in entertainment has renewed interest in Sakaguchi's original vision for Aki, suggesting that the film's legacy may continue to evolve as technology advances. The film's availability on streaming platforms ensures that future generations can appreciate this digital relic and its place in animation history.

UK Watchdog Probes Paramount's $110bn Warner Bros Discovery Takeover

The UK's Competition and Markets Authority has launched an investigation into Paramount's $110bn ta…
The UK's Regulatory Scrutiny of the Media Merger The UK competition watchdog has opened an investigation into Paramount Skydance's $110bn (£82bn) takeover of Warner Bros Discovery (WBD). The Proposed Media Powerhouse The deal will create a media powerhouse controlling assets including the Paramount and HBO Max streaming services, Channel 5 and TNT Sports, which broadcasts Champions League, Premier League and the Olympics, the Hollywood studios behind franchises including Superman, Batman and Top Gun, as well as HBO, home to shows including Game of Thrones, The White Lotus and Succession. Competition Concerns and Regulatory Process The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said it has opened an investigation to ascertain whether the tie-up will result in a “substantial lessening of competition” in the UK. The CMA said it will decide by 7 August whether the deal warrants a more in-depth phase 2 investigation, which can take up to five months. Industry Backlash and Regulatory Hurdles In February, Paramount beat Netflix to take over WBD, bringing an end to a high-stakes bidding war between the media companies. However, the deal has faced criticism from industry professionals and politicians, with over 1,000 film and TV industry professionals signing an open letter protesting against the deal. US senator Elizabeth Warren has described the deal as “an antitrust disaster threatening higher prices and fewer choices for American families”. Future Plans and Potential Impact Paramount's chief executive, David Ellison, has promised to continue making a minimum of 30 films a year across the Paramount and Warner Bros film studios. However, job cuts appear inevitable, with $3bn in cost savings already announced after the merger of Skydance and Paramount last year, and a further $6bn in post-WBD takeover synergies revealed in filings.

Baby Disrupts Kenneth Branagh's RSC Return in The Tempest

A baby's persistent cooing disrupted the first half of Kenneth Branagh's return to the Royal Shakes…
The Unplanned IntermissionAudience members at a matinee performance of The Tempest at the Royal Shakespeare Company's Stratford-upon-Avon theatre experienced an unexpected disruption when a baby gurgled and cooed throughout the entire first half of the production. The incident, which occurred during Kenneth Branagh's highly anticipated return to the RSC after 30 years, led to audience complaints and requests for refunds as the noise affected concentration on Shakespeare's seminal play.Performance InterruptedThe disturbance began during the opening scene of The Tempest, in which Branagh's character Prospero conjures up a violent storm. According to audience members, the baby appeared to wake up during this pivotal moment and continued making noises without interruption."There was a young woman with a baby in the audience – and it mithered all the way through the first act," ticketholder Sian Morgan told the Daily Mail. "Thank goodness there was never any actual screaming or crying, but it was gurgling and cooing and chirping very loudly throughout. It never let up."The situation escalated as audience members grew increasingly frustrated, with "queues of people lining up to complain" at ticket desks. The mother and baby were eventually asked not to return for the second part of the performance and were offered the option to watch the remainder of the show from TV monitors in the theatre's cafe.High-Stakes PerformanceThe financial and cultural significance of this performance cannot be overstated. Tickets for Branagh's return to the RSC cost up to £112 and sold out within hours of going on sale the previous year. One audience member noted their group had made a six-hour round trip and paid £400 to attend the performance, which they felt had been "completely ruined" by the disturbance.Among those affected was former home secretary David Blunkett, who is blind and relies on hearing the performance. "I said to the person sitting next to me: 'I'm very tolerant but I'm not sure the baby's getting anything out of this,'" he said.Theatre Etiquette Under ScrutinyThe incident has brought renewed attention to theatre etiquette policies and audience expectations. The RSC's current guidelines state that babes-in-arms can be admitted to all performances, but if a child disturbs others, an adult "may need to watch the show from the screen outside the auditorium with the baby."The theatre encourages parents with young children to attend "chilled performances," which "takes a more casual approach to noise and movement in the auditorium." This recent disruption follows other high-profile incidents of audience etiquette issues, including Rosamund Pike calling out an audience member for texting during a pivotal scene of another production.Future of Audience ExperienceAs theatres continue to balance accessibility with traditional performance expectations, this incident may prompt further refinement of policies regarding young audiences. The high-profile nature of Branagh's return and the significant investment made by attendees highlight the importance of maintaining an optimal experience for all patrons while still being inclusive of families with infants. The RSC may consider additional measures such as more clearly designated family-friendly performances or enhanced sound-dampening sections to accommodate different audience needs without compromising the artistic experience for traditional theatre-goers.

Apple's App Store Introduces Personalized Recommendations

Apple's App Store is rolling out personalized recommendations based on users' interests and behavio…
The Evolution of App Discovery Finding a new app on Apple's App Store is about to become less about browsing top charts or picking through curated collections from App Store editors. This week, Apple announced a series of discovery features that will personalize app recommendations based on users' interests and behavior, providing a new way for developers to have their app discovered. Personalized Collections and App Notes At Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), the iPhone maker introduced Personalized Collections in the App Store, which will showcase recommendations tailored to the individual. These will also include new 'App Notes' that explain why the specific apps were recommended to you. Starting this week, you'll find these new personalized suggestions in various places in the App Store, including the Apps or Games tab or on the Search tab. The Data Behind Personalization The suggestions will also evolve over time based on a user's app usage and downloads. The feature will initially be available in English in the U.S., and will expand to other regions and languages over time. The Impact on Developers and Users The update reflects the maturity of the App Store ecosystem, where being featured by Apple's App Store editors or being made 'App of the Week' is no longer enough to drive guaranteed growth. As competition for users' attention increases, a selection of new tools could help to re-engage existing customers, promote special offers, and package services together in new ways. New Tools for Developers For instance, developers will now be able to use rich images and videos in their product page header and search results that can highlight their new content or seasonal offerings, which could encourage existing users to return to the app to see what's new. They can also organize all their different marketing materials in a new Asset Library, where they can store regularly used assets for things like in-app events and special sales or promotions. The Future of App Store Development Apple will also allow App Bundles for developers running subscription businesses, allowing them to partner with other developers to offer groups of subscription apps for a lower price than if bought as separate subscriptions. Under the new system, developers will also be able to sell subscriptions to larger groups and organizations using new options to build multi-user in-app purchase experiences.

Whey Protein Shortage Looms as GLP-1 Weight‑Loss Drugs Drive Surge in Demand

The rapid uptake of GLP-1 weight‑loss drugs such as Mounjaro has pushed global whey protein demand …
Executive Summary: Market Tension Over Whey Protein SupplyThe exploding popularity of GLP-1 weight‑loss medications is driving an unprecedented surge in whey protein consumption, causing prices to climb five‑fold and prompting fears of a supply shortfall that threatens manufacturers of all sizes.Weight‑Loss Drugs Trigger Unprecedented Whey Protein ConsumptionGLP-1 drugs such as Mounjaro suppress appetite, leading physicians to recommend higher protein intake to preserve muscle mass. This clinical guidance, combined with broader health messaging around protein, has turned whey—derived from milk during cheese‑making—into a must‑have supplement for millions of users.Price Spike and Volume Data Reveal Five‑Fold IncreaseFood‑grade whey powder in north‑west Europe now trades at ≈ €1,700 (£1,469) per tonne, the highest level on record.Since the start of 2026, prices have risen > 50 % (DCA Market Intelligence).Vesper data shows a jump from £4,302 per tonne (June 2023) to £23,751 per tonne (June 2026) for 80 % whey concentrate.Analyst Jasper Endlich (Vesper) notes that “the market is still finding a home for the product, but there’s clearly a shortage in the sense that people want more than there physically is available.”Supply Strain Hits Small Producers and Alters Ingredient FormulationsManufacturers are scrambling for allocation; some suppliers have sold out for the remainder of 2026, and one producer plans to cease WPC 34 % production after summer. Small brands, such as Hermosa founder Erika Tamayo, report buying whey at double the cost of the previous quarter and facing longer lead times. To mitigate costs, larger companies are reformulating products with blended protein mixes, cutting ingredient expenses to “half or even a third of the price,” according to Endlich.Outlook: New Plants and Blended Formulas May Ease Shortage by Late 2026Vesper observes that new whey production facilities are coming online, and the shift toward protein blends could stabilize prices once capacity catches up with demand. However, analysts caution that continued growth in GLP‑1 prescriptions will keep pressure on inventories, meaning small‑scale producers may remain vulnerable for several more quarters.

Trump's NBA Finals Appearance: A Status Symbol or a Distraction?

Donald Trump's appearance at the NBA finals between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs spark…
The Presidential Appearance On Monday night, Donald Trump, the most powerful man in the world, attended the NBA finals game between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs at Madison Square Garden. His presence caused a stir, with barricades set up around Midtown Manhattan, security lines outside the arena, and agents screening attendees. The Event Details Trump's grand entrance was marked by a half-mile-long motorcade, and he watched the game from a suite encased in plexiglass shielding with extra security. The president's attendance was seen as a status symbol, but it also drew criticism and boos from the crowd when he appeared on the big screen during the national anthem. The Data Analysis The Knicks suffered their first loss in a month and a half, which may have implications for the series. The game was a highly anticipated matchup, with some comparing it to iconic fights like Ali-Frazier in 1971 or Michael Jordan's signature nights. The Impact Analysis Trump's appearance at the game highlighted his lifelong quest for status and attention. Despite his efforts to insert himself into the spectacle, his presence ultimately diminished him. The crowd's reaction and social media images of him seemingly napping during the game undermined his attempt to be seen as a VIP. The Prediction If the Knicks go on to lose the series, the 'Trump jinx' may become a narrative, especially if he returns for Game 4 as he threatened. The incident may have also sparked a renewed debate about the intersection of politics and sports, and how public figures like Trump navigate these spaces.
