After a day spent in the confines of a nest box in our sycamore tree, her departure shifts back by a few minutes every night. She was unflustered as I approached her and scooped all 10 ducklings into the bucket. Then I held it, squeaking and piping, over the wall. The mallard flew over, rejoined them and led them to the river. The Human Shield Effect The “human shield effect” changes the behaviour of animals, making them less vigilant for predators when they know that humans are around. Unwittingly through our presence, combined with the undisturbed density of this wildlife garden, we have made birds feel safer here, and maybe they have learned this from successful previous years. This is reasonable in the first half where nothing is what it seems. But in the second, the ideas dry up. With little to surprise us beyond the odd jarring sound effect, the play drifts towards Victorian melodrama: too much expository dialogue, too little tension and an ending that is uncharacteristically predictable. At times, it almost feels as if her beady gaze is casting moral judgment. The film’s revealing scenes of factory farming – and the quiet desperation we imagine Hen feels when her eggs are repeatedly snatched – may turn audiences vegetarian, or at least away from factory-farmed chicken. The Prediction With no financial support available for independent film-making in Hungary, Pálfi headed first to Mexico, gradually developing the idea of making his star a powerless chicken, through whose adventures would be woven a human story. The film will likely inspire a new perspective on the lives of both chickens and humans, and the consequences of our actions.

Spend five minutes reading about AI and you’ll run into LLMs, RAG, RLHF, and a dozen other terms that can make even very smart people in the tech world feel insecure. This glossary is our attempt to fix that. We update it regularly as the field evolves, so consider it a living document, much like the AI systems it describes. Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) Artificial general intelligence, or AGI, is a nebulous term. But it generally refers to AI that’s more capable than the average human at many, if not most, tasks. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman once described AGI as the “equivalent of a median human that you could hire as a co-worker.” Meanwhile, OpenAI’s charter defines AGI as “highly autonomous systems that outperform humans at most economically valuable work.” Google DeepMind’s understanding differs slightly from these two definitions; the lab views AGI as “AI that’s at least as capable as humans at most cognitive tasks.” Confused? Not to worry — so are experts at the forefront of AI research. The Incident French racing driver Romain Grosjean has angered animal rights group PETA for “flippant” comments after hitting a bird while testing for next month’s Indianapolis 500. Grosjean's Comments The driver, who survived a fireball crash during the 2020 Formula One Bahrain GP, described the bird strike at around 230 mph in graphic terms this week. “I still have blood on my race suit, there were pieces of the bird on the rollbar. I couldn’t see where I was going any more, there’s plenty on the aero screen,” he said. “The helmet stinks, the seat stinks. I didn’t get any chicken for lunch; I just walked past it.” PETA's Response Mimi Bekhechi, the senior vice-president for PETA UK and Europe, accused the 40-year-old of lacking empathy. “Birds have feelings, apparently more than Grosjean does, considering that he seemed more concerned with his car, helmet, and suit – all replaceable – than the smash-up of this unsuspecting bird,” Bekhechi said in a statement.
