New World Cup Rules: VAR Expands, Red Card Offenses Increase

The 2026 World Cup will introduce several new rules, including expanded VAR responsibilities, new r…
The Evolution of VAR in World Cup Football The 2026 World Cup will see significant changes to the role of Video Assistant Referees (VAR). VAR will now be used to check every decision that results in a corner, as well as decisions leading to the award of a second yellow card and thus a sending-off. This expansion aims to reduce wrong decisions affecting high-profile matches. Enhanced VAR Protocol for Set Pieces In addition to its existing responsibilities, VAR will also assess fouls before set pieces. If an incident occurs before a set piece and has a direct impact on the outcome, VAR can intervene. This change targets issues like grappling in the box before corners and free kicks. Tougher Discipline: New Red Card Offenses Two new incidents have led to the introduction of additional red card offenses. Players or officials who leave the field in protest at a referee's decision can now be given a red card. Similarly, players who cover their mouths in a confrontational situation will also face the same sanction. Cracking Down on Tactical Timeouts To prevent tactical timeouts, outfield players will be required to leave the field for treatment and stay off for 60 seconds before rejoining. Goalkeepers will continue to receive treatment on the field, but with the added requirement that other players retreat to the center circle during treatment. Speeding Up the Game Referees will implement countdowns to speed up goal kicks and throw-ins. A five-second countdown will be used, and failure to comply will result in the opposition being awarded the throw-in or a corner. Player Substitutions and Time Management Players being substituted must leave the field within 10 seconds of their number being raised. Failure to do so will result in the replacement player being kept off the field for an additional minute.

Can AI-Powered Killer Drones Develop a Moral Compass?

The development of autonomous AI-powered killer drones raises questions about their ability to make…
The Future of Warfare: AI-Powered Drones Should the AI-powered drones of the future have a licence to kill? The question is becoming ever more pressing as governments and the defence industry acknowledge that drone systems will play an increasingly crucial role in future warfare. The Moral Dilemma of Autonomous Weapons With drones being deployed in huge numbers in the Ukraine war and AI being used to assist bombing missions in the Iran conflict, there is an expectation among some observers that weapons will have to operate with increased operational autonomy, which means they will need something approximating a moral framework. Expert Opinions on AI and Morality Last year Mustafa Suleyman, chief executive of Microsoft’s AI arm and a co-founder of the UK-based DeepMind, was unequivocal about the issue of machines making moral decisions. He said: “AIs cannot be people – or moral beings.” David Omand, the former head of the UK spy agency, GCHQ, believes AI can create a “moral” configuration for unmanned weapons. The UK armed forces minister, Al Carns, told the Financial Times recently there must be an option to “take the human out of the loop” in decision-making. The Challenges of Programming Morality Zee Talat, an academic specialising in machine learning at the University of Edinburgh’s school of informatics, argues that large language models – the technology that underpins modern generative AI systems such as chatbots – are fundamentally incapable of moral decision-making. “If you have a machine that’s probabilistic by nature it will veer towards the most likely answer in a situation. Do we think that morality follows probabilistic notions?” The Debate on Autonomous Weapons Governance Jessica Dorsey, an assistant professor of international law at Utrecht University in the Netherlands, raises concerns about determining whose morality the drone is following, given the United Nations is still trying to achieve a global consensus on autonomous weapons governance. “War is filled with so many variables and it is a given that things will go wrong. And when that happens at AI-like speed, it is difficult to unravel.” The Future of AI-Powered Drones Some experts argue that giving drones greater autonomy, and programming rules of engagement and morality into them, will be a necessity if other nation states continue to develop and deploy similar technology at pace. Nicholas Wright, a neuroscientist and author of Warhead, a book on the human brain and war, says: “For any military to compete effectively against other high-end militaries it is going to need a large amount of systems that will be required to take decisions on their own.” Olaf Hichwa, the co-founder of Neros, a US drone startup, believes that drones will not replace human decision-makers, but enhance the abilities of their human pilots.

Israel continues attacks on Lebanon despite US-brokered ceasefire

Israel has continued to launch attacks on southern Lebanon despite a new US-brokered ceasefire agre…
The Ongoing Conflict Israel has continued to launch attacks on southern Lebanon despite the two countries striking a new United States-brokered ceasefire agreement. At least five people were killed as Israeli warplanes and drones struck several towns on Friday, Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency (NNA) reported. The Israeli military also issued new forced displacement orders. The Attacks and Casualties The strikes hit residential areas, buildings and roads, while a major demolition was carried out in Bab al-Thaniya. Israeli warplanes also hit close to Jabel Amel Hospital, targeting the Bank Audi area. Two people were killed in Habboush, including a doctor. In Doueir, a young man was killed and another suffered serious injuries due to an attack by an Israeli warplane. A strike in the village of Qalawiya Tower killed one person and wounded another, while a drone killed a man sitting in a car in Kfar Reman. The Ceasefire Agreement The attacks followed closely on news that Israel and Lebanon had agreed to a new US-brokered ceasefire. The deal was announced by the Trump administration on Thursday, just weeks after a previous agreement to cease hostilities was announced on April 16. The Impact on Lebanon In the interval, however, more than 600 people were killed in Israeli strikes across Lebanon, while the Israeli military expanded its presence in the south of the country. It now occupies about one-fifth of Lebanese territory. The chance that the new deal will halt the hostilities appears highly unlikely, with the continued exchange of fire between Hezbollah and Israel appearing to bear out the pessimism. The Rejection of the Deal Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem was swift to reject the deal, as he had the agreement in April, dubbing it a “surrender and defeat”. The Iran-linked armed group said it had launched at least eight attacks against Israeli military positions in southern Lebanon between early Friday morning and Friday afternoon. The Diplomatic Efforts Andrea Dessi, assistant professor at the American University of Rome, told Al Jazeera that any agreement that excludes Hezbollah is destined to fail. “Any deal that excludes or completely ignores the prerogatives of key actors on the ground, primarily Hezbollah, but of course also Iran behind Hezbollah, is unfortunately destined to fail,” Dessi told Al Jazeera. He said diplomacy, nonetheless, remains the only viable path. “There is no military solution to all of these issues, including Lebanon, and therefore talks will continue.”

Liverpool Appoints Andoni Iraola as Head Coach on Two-Year Deal

Liverpool have confirmed former Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola as the club’s new head coach on a tw…
Liverpool confirmed that former Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola has signed a two‑year contract to become the club’s head coach, six days after the dismissal of Arne Slot. Appointment of Andoni Iraola as Liverpool’s New Head Coach The club identified Iraola as the ideal candidate to match their preferred playing style. Competing interests from Milan, Bayer Leverkusen, Crystal Palace, Stuttgart’s Sebastian Hoeness and Lens’s Pierre Sage were set aside as Liverpool’s hierarchy had already favoured the Basque manager. Contract Terms and Timeline Contract length: Two years, running until the end of the 2027/28 season. Negotiation start: Early in the week, with talks progressing smoothly. Key condition: Iraola made clear Liverpool was the only club he wanted to join after his Bournemouth contract expired. Back‑room staff: Iraola intends to bring assistants Tommy Elphick, Shaun Cooper, analyst Tom Webber and fitness coach Pablo de la Torre to Anfield. Strategic Shift for Liverpool’s Playing Style The appointment was driven by sporting director Richard Hughes, who previously hired Iraola at Bournemouth in 2023. Hughes and chief executive of football Michael Edwards concluded that a more aggressive, high‑pressing approach was needed after the disappointing end to Slot’s tenure. Iraola’s record of improving Bournemouth year‑on‑year with limited resources and creating an exciting, high‑pressing team aligns with Liverpool’s vision. Future Outlook Under Iraola’s Leadership With a squad eager for titles and a supportive fan base, Iraola’s arrival is expected to rejuvenate Liverpool’s tactical identity and restore competitiveness in domestic and European competitions. The short‑term focus will be to translate his proven Premier League success into consistent performances, while long‑term ambitions include re‑establishing Liverpool as a dominant force under an attacking philosophy.
