Kushner‑Linked Luxury Resort Sparks Massive Protests on Albania’s Sazan Island

A $1.6 bn luxury resort proposed by Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump on Albania’s protected Sazan Isl…
Executive Summary: Kushner‑linked Resort Triggers Nationwide Protests Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner announced a $1.6 bn luxury development on Albania’s uninhabited Sazan Island. Within days, thousands of Albanians took to the streets, demanding the project be halted amid environmental, legal and political concerns. The Kushner Vision for Sazan Island The plan envisions a sprawling seaside complex of hotels, apartments and villas within the protected Vjosa‑Narta delta. It also includes converting a former communist‑era military base into a resort. The development is being promoted by Sazan Real Estate Development LLC, with strategic investor status granted to Atlantic Incubation Partners, a firm linked to Kushner’s Affinity Partners fund. Financial Scale and Government Promises Project valuation: $1.6 bn (approximately €1.4 bn). Prime Minister Edi Rama has cited a broader €4 bn ($4.6 bn) investment package covering the Vlora region. Government claims the resort will create jobs, boost tourism revenue and help Albania meet its EU accession target for 2030. Environmental and Social Backlash Thousands protested in Tirana and coastal towns over three consecutive evenings. More than 60,000 signatures on a petition demanding a halt to construction. Over 40 environmental NGOs, led by the Protection and Preservation of Natural Environment in Albania (PPNEA), warned the project would damage a biodiverse wetland and migratory bird habitats. Demonstrators displayed signs such as “Nation is not for sale” and “I don’t want Albania like Dubai”. Governance, Transparency and Corruption Probes Albania’s special anti‑corruption prosecutor has opened an investigation into: Changes to the protected status of the Vjosa‑Narta area. Bypassing of public tender procedures for land contracts. The source of funds used to acquire coastal land titles. Critics note the lack of public announcements when fencing and excavators appeared on the beach, raising doubts about compliance with national property laws. Political Stakes for Prime Minister Rama Rama frames the resort as a flagship project to attract foreign investment and accelerate EU integration. He has dismissed the protests as exaggerated and warned that halting the investment would signal hostility to investors. At the same time, EU Council President Antonio Costa reminded Albania that accession depends on meeting EU environmental standards. Outlook: What Comes Next? The anti‑corruption investigation and sustained street mobilisations suggest the project faces an uncertain timeline. If legal challenges succeed, the development could be delayed or re‑scaled, forcing the government to seek alternative tourism strategies that balance economic goals with environmental protection.

From Barren Shores to Green Oases: How a Surfer's Quest for Shade Transformed Costa Rica's Coastline

Costas Verdes, a Costa Rican nonprofit founded by surfer Max Tattenbach, has transformed deforested…
The Lead Pointing to a photograph of dry brown long grass hugging the shoreline, Gerardo Bolaños stands in front of a green oasis of seedlings and trees potted in black plastic bags. "This is what Playa Guiones looked like when we started in 2011," says the executive director of Costas Verdes, a Costa Rican nonprofit. The Coastal Transformation As howler monkeys growl in the background, Bolaños points to the picture next to it – an image of the same patch of land but with scores of flourishing, lush green trees. Today, he says, this is how the beach looks. The reason for the stark difference, says Bolaños, a straight-talking man with a coloured tattoo of the turquoise-browed motmot bird on his left arm, is a sustained tree-planting programme that Costas Verdes started in 2011. The Roots of Reforestation Costas Verdes was founded by then Costa Rican university student Max Tattenbach in 2009. A keen surfer, he wanted to restore the shoreline at his favourite surf spot, Playa Hermosa. "Playa Hermosa is about 6km [3.5 miles] of beach, and it only had one [area of] shade along the entire beach," says Tattenbach. "I used to go surfing there and take my then girlfriend and now wife. She didn't surf and liked to read and chill on the beach, but Playa Hermosa had no shade, so she didn't like going, and it started to become an issue. I promised her I would reforest Playa Hermosa so we could enjoy the beach." The Environmental Impact The project has transformed deforested Pacific coastlines into thriving ecosystems through a community-driven environmental project that has planted more than 100,000 native trees across 34 beaches, reviving wildlife habitats and combating decades of deforestation from cattle farming. Walk along the seafront in Nosara, over 100km further down the coast from Hermosa, and the plan appears to have paid off, with thousands of trees such as tropical almond trees, madero negro (Gliricidia sepium) and frangipani lining the trails and offering shade to beachgoers, creating a thriving ecosystem for wildlife. The Historical Context of Deforestation Bolaños, who joined the organisation as a volunteer in 2011, became project director three years later and executive director in 2024, says deforestation has changed the area's landscape. "Last century, we had great coastal forests all along the Pacific coast of Costa Rica," he says. Bolaños estimates that between the 1940s and 1970s, Costa Rica lost 70% of its forest cover, including along the Pacific coast. He puts this down to a boom in livestock farming. "Farmers burned the ecosystems and grew grass to feed the cattle. It was extremely aggressive, poorly planned," he says. "The beachfronts were devastated by cattle farming." The Future of Coastal Restoration What began as a personal quest for shade has evolved into a community-driven environmental movement with significant implications for coastal conservation. The success of Costas Verdes demonstrates how small-scale, community-led initiatives can have a substantial impact on environmental restoration, offering a model for other regions facing similar deforestation challenges. As climate change continues to threaten coastal ecosystems worldwide, the reforestation efforts in Costa Rica provide a hopeful example of how human intervention can help restore natural habitats and build resilience against environmental degradation.

Marilyn Monroe's Closest Confidants Share Their Stories

The article discusses Marilyn Monroe's friendships with women, including Amy Greene, Milton Greene'…
Marilyn Monroe's Inner Circle Marilyn Monroe's life and legacy have been extensively documented, but her friendships with women are often overlooked. The article explores her relationships with those closest to her, revealing a more nuanced side to the iconic actress. Female Friendships Monroe had many female friends, including Amy Greene, the widow of photographer Milton Greene. Greene shared her home with Monroe for several years in the mid-1950s and remembers the scrutiny they faced: "Girlfriends would say, 'Are you out of your mind to have that woman in your house?' I'd say, 'What's wrong with you? There's nothing there. They're business partners!'" The Power of Platonic Relationships Monroe's friendships with women like Lauren Bacall and Betty Grable are well-documented, particularly in films like How to Marry a Millionaire and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Her relationship with Jane Russell, her co-star in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, was particularly significant, with Russell recalling a day at the beach with close female friends: "[We] had wine, music and more talk by the fire … I thought of Marilyn. I wished I had her phone number, because I knew she belonged there, where we were all laughing about our problems." Male Friends and Collaborators While Monroe's relationships with men like John F. Kennedy have been widely reported, her platonic friendships with men like photographer Lawrence Schiller were also important to her. Schiller worked with Monroe on a nude photoshoot, one of the most scandalous of her career. A More Nuanced Legacy The article highlights the complexity of Monroe's relationships and challenges the notion that she was solely a sex symbol. Her friendships with women, in particular, reveal a more vulnerable and human side to her personality.

Blue Origin's New Glenn Rocket Explodes During Florida Test

Blue Origin's New Glenn rocket exploded during a test in Florida, calling it an 'anomaly' while con…
The LeadBlue Origin's New Glenn rocket exploded during a test in Florida on Thursday, an incident which the aerospace company called an "anomaly." All personnel have been accounted for, and the company has promised to provide updates as they learn more about what caused the explosion. The Explosion DetailsA livestream posted by NSF, an aerospace news organization, captured the fiery plume of the explosion. Homes shook in nearby Cape Canaveral and Cocoa Beach around 9pm, with residents turning to social media to ask what happened. Cape Canaveral Space Force Station's Launch Complex 36 is visible from the beach, and the internet quickly filled with photos of the orange fireball. Emergency officials confirmed there was no threat due to fumes or other potential hazards.Recent Setbacks for Blue OriginThis explosion marks another setback for Blue Origin, which is owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. The New Glenn rocket was already grounded in April, as the Federal Aviation Administration required Blue Origin to investigate an engine mishap. The FAA has not yet commented on whether Thursday's explosion will trigger another investigation.Industry Competition ImplicationsThe incident comes at a critical time for Blue Origin's space ambitions. Earlier this week, NASA announced it had chosen Blue Origin over Elon Musk's SpaceX to conduct the first of three uncrewed lunar missions this year to kickstart construction of a $20 billion moon base. Both companies are competing to provide crew landers for upcoming Artemis missions, including the planned 2028 return of humans to the moon on Artemis IV. Both companies have built large new facilities in or close to Cape Canaveral's Kennedy Space Center to support crewed and cargo missions in partnership with NASA.Future Outlook for Blue OriginDespite the explosion, Blue Origin's space ambitions remain significant. The company has a vested interest in space tourism, having sent an all-female, star-studded crew including Gayle King and Katy Perry into space last April. Elon Musk, whose SpaceX lost the NASA contract to Blue Origin, commented on the incident, writing "Most unfortunate. Rockets are hard." This latest explosion may delay Blue Origin's timeline but is unlikely to derail their long-term space exploration goals, though it may create opportunities for competitors like SpaceX to gain ground in the increasingly competitive private space race.

From Classroom to Conservation: The Kindergarten Teacher Who Saved a King Penguin Colony

In southern Chile’s Tierra del Fuego, former kindergarten teacher Cecilia Durán Gafo transformed a …
Lead: A Teacher’s Unexpected Role as Penguin GuardianWhen a colony of king penguins began nesting on her land in the early 1990s, Cecilia Durán Gafo—then a kindergarten teacher—found herself thrust into wildlife stewardship. After a decade of poaching, theft, and mistreatment, she established a protected reserve that now shelters almost 200 penguins, making it the only continental king‑penguin colony worldwide. From Classroom to Conservation: How the Reserve Was BornIn 2010, after a sudden resurgence of penguins, Durán rallied her family and fenced off 30 hectares (74 acres) of her 1,000‑hectare farm. She patrols the beach daily, offering visitors only distant viewing to minimize disturbance. The reserve officially opened to the public, allowing controlled tourism while safeguarding the birds. Penguin Population Growth: From 8 Survivors to Nearly 200Early 1990s: First nesting observed.2010: Colony reappears; initial count of 90 birds.2011: Population crashes to 8 individuals.2026: Reserve reports nearly 200 king penguins. Private Reserves Fill Gaps in Antarctic Wildlife ProtectionDurán’s effort mirrors findings from a 2022 Nature Ecology & Evolution study that identified over 15,000 private protected areas as crucial for conserving under‑represented biomes. In regions like Tierra del Fuego, invasive predators such as minks and grey foxes threaten native species, and government action alone has been insufficient. Future Outlook: Expanding Community‑Led Conservation in Tierra del FuegoScientists like Dr Klemens Pütz of the Antarctic Research Trust credit the reserve with providing a safe breeding ground. Continued community involvement and stricter biosecurity against invasive species could see the colony stabilize and possibly expand, offering a model for other coastal habitats facing similar threats.

Fatal Shark Attack Claims Life in Northeast AustraliaA man has died after a shark attack off the coast of Queensland in northeast Australia, police confirmed. The tragic incident highlights the ongoing risks faced by beachgoers and surfers in Australian waters, which are home to various shark species.Tragedy at Kennedy Shoal ReefThe victim was attacked near Kennedy Shoal, a shallow reef approximately 45km (28 miles) off the Queensland coast. Emergency services responded quickly, rushing the man to shore, but he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at the medical facility. Police have not yet released the victim's identity pending notification of next of kin.Following the attack, authorities have closed beaches in the area while they assess safety conditions and determine when it will be safe to reopen them to the public.Rising Shark Incidents on Australian CoastsThis latest incident marks the second fatal shark encounter in Australia within just over a week. On May 16, a 38-year-old man died after being bitten by a shark near Perth on the country's west coast.According to data from the Institute of Health and Welfare, the majority of shark attacks occur along Australia's east and southeast coasts, with an average of about 20 incidents recorded each year. While attacks are relatively rare, fatalities do occur periodically, prompting ongoing research into shark behavior and prevention strategies.Beach Safety Measures Under ReviewThe recent spate of fatal attacks has renewed discussions about beach safety measures in Australia. Local authorities are likely to enhance surveillance in affected areas and may consider additional shark detection technologies or warning systems.Beach closures following shark sightings are standard procedure in Australia, allowing authorities to assess the situation and ensure public safety. The duration of closures depends on various factors, including the type of shark involved, its size, and behavior patterns observed.Ongoing Concerns for Coastal RecreationAs Australia enters its winter season, fewer people typically use the beaches, potentially reducing the risk of encounters. However, the recent fatalities serve as a reminder of the inherent dangers of ocean activities in regions where sharks naturally inhabit.Authorities continue to balance the need for public safety with maintaining access to Australia's iconic beaches, which are central to the country's tourism and recreational culture. Research into shark behavior and improved detection methods remains a priority for marine safety experts.
